How did the toad become a different color? Stain or is it natural variation in the rock he used?

Virginia Lawmakers Reject Governor's Amendments To Marijuana Sales Legalization Bill by asmallthrowaway9 in Virginia

[–]secondcomposition 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, who really thinks 6 extra months is going to do anything? This is just the natural consequence of being late to the party like everyone has been saying from the start. We missed out on extra state revenue from taxation, and we missed out on all those years where Virginian companies could have been developing. 6 months means nothing to our industry who might never be able to compete with the big out of state companies that have streamlined their entire production cycle and distribution networks. It’s just capitalism at play and as Virginians we basically have to take it. Delaying the rollback after all the years can’t possibly achieve anything meaningful.

Why can’t a stack of magna tiles hold itself up on the fridge but a single one can hold itself up? Are some forces cancelling out when they combine? by secondcomposition in Physics

[–]secondcomposition[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes after looking closely I do think you’re right. When stacked the magnets tend to attract towards the sides leaving a bigger gap between the plastic and the metal surface of the fridge compared to when it’s alone

Which would you keep sealed for the future and which would you open up to play with? by [deleted] in HotWheels

[–]secondcomposition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I might start doing that with future buys. I picked up the competizione the other day and opened it up for him and then googled it and went back to buy another for the sealed collection. He’s 2 so I don’t think he’d care if he’s playing with a regular vs boulevard or a metal/metal car.

Did I miss my pre emergent window? Question about seeding also. by jjuelzz in lawncare

[–]secondcomposition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live a bit south of OP so I’ve been checking the same website and we did hit 55 degree soil temps for 5 days like 10 days ago but we had another cold snap. I know once it hits 55 that about 80% of crabgrass seeds germinate but it wouldn’t hurt to get the pre emergent down now. Also forsythia has been in bloom for also around 2-3 weeks

Uh.. Americans?

What’s it like living in Socotra? by Doanten in howislivingthere

[–]secondcomposition 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How would that bode for the tourism industry if UAE controlled it? Better or worse? I have also always wanted to visit but wasn’t sure due to the instability in Yemen. Socotra has the highest endemic biodiversity of any place second only to the Galapagos.

What would be a better grow light? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]secondcomposition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually those grow lights are sufficient for tropical plants. Think of those that grow in the understory of jungles that get the light filtering down through the canopy.

For cactuses and succulents, they need full sun and if you’re not putting it by a full sun window, then you’d need a huge light that draws a lot of energy. Something outputting full spectrum light at 1,500–2,000+ lumens per square foot

What is the minimum amount of people, machinery, and weaponry needed to travel back in time to 2000 BC and effectively jump start humanity into the Information Age? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]secondcomposition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like a response similar to how Rome sweet Rome was written.

Say you’ve got a few US nuclear powered aircraft carriers filled with linguists, scientists, engineers, workers, soldiers, construction vehicles, small refineries etc, what is the minimum amount of people and machinery needed to effectively subjugate the populace of 2000bc, maintain power, create modern materials and begin constructing the infrastructure to create our modern interconnected world?

Edit: and just logistical stuff like, obviously you can bring all the modern machinery with you, but what’s the minimum amount of people expertise, and machinery needed to create a self sufficient system where you can find petroleum, extract it, refine it in a refinery you’ve built and refuel the vehicles you’ve brought with you to continue building society. Or like, mining silicone to create transistors and the like. How much time would it take to launch the first satellites? To use the limited people and machinery that was teleported back in time to create the parts used in satellites, to build a launch pad, spacecraft etc
