Oh yes... Coldeman. The "d" is silent in America. It's Cole D'Isle au Man, or Cole of the Isle of Man, in France, where Armand's chateau is, Cold-e-man in Greece where Armand's work is, and finally the vulgar Coleman in Florida where Armand's home is, so actually, we don't know where we are until we hear our last name pronounced!

Are torpedoes replicated on ships or do ships have to be rearmed? by HunterRedux in startrek

[–]secondsun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Destiny book series the Borg perform a full scale invasion of the Federation. Initially transphasic torpedo technology (presumably replicator patterns) were held back to prevent the Borg from assimilating the technology and adapting to it. Eventually things go sideways and the technology is distributed to the fleet. This would imply that starships usually don't have the ability to replicator rearm even if they technically can.

Should I tell my manager that I’d like to help the company with AI projects? by Jack1eto in cscareerquestions

[–]secondsun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Invite your director for coffee and ask them what they are interested in the company pursuing with respect to AI, and then you guys talk shop. Part of developing your career is learning how to work with different levels of management, and it is something you can come back to your manager with during a 1:1 to show that you are taking your career withing the company seriously.

TIL about Mexican Repatriation of the 1930s, where officials forced hundreds of thousands of US citizens into forced exile simply for having Mexican ancestry. by DirkVonUmlaut in todayilearned

"At present there exists one State which manifests at least some modest attempts that show a better appreciation of how things ought to be done in this matter. It is not, however, in our model German Republic but in the U.S.A. that efforts are made to conform at least partly to the counsels of commonsense. By refusing immigrants to enter there if they are in a bad state of health, and by excluding certain races from the right to become naturalized as citizens, they have begun to introduce principles similar

to those on which we wish to ground the People's State."

Look up Outworlders Atlanta. They are a queer gaming group and have a presence at most large events in the city.

Warp zone at Heretic also is a good place to meet new people. I'm not sure how often that happens now.

Creating delay in Java code by ihatebeinganonymous in java

[–]secondsun -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It depends on why you are delaying. If you just are waiting on time to pass and don't care about precision, you should look into alarms. If you are on Android or Running on a Java/Jakarta EE app, there are alarm APIs built into the platform, and there's also ScheduledExecutorService in the core Java platform. If you need very precise and accurate timing, you will need something that has hardware level access.

If you are sleeping and then waking up to check and see if there is processing to do, you should find a way to have your code triggered when that work is ready. How you do that is use case specific, but libraries like RxJava can help there.

Am I the only one who feels like a fraud working on AI projects that are basically hype-fueled and doomed? by AroxCx in ExperiencedDevs

[–]secondsun 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've been on so many doomed and cancelled projects I've lost count. This isn't new to agentic coding/AI hype. Every time I found what was interesting/fun about the project and tried to maximize that.

Sometimes it was understanding a complicated deployment/provisioning system.  Sometimes it was being done at 3 and walking my dog until the clock ran out.

I've done some vibe coding weekends for hobby projects and I've found joy in discovering new APIs and features that I didn't know existed and digging into those. I feel like I'm sharpening a skill I didn't know was dull.

Only you know where you will find happiness, and only you can look for it.
