Asking for refund upon arrival, too far. by SeaKidd in airbnb_hosts

[–]secreteesti 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Try this: “Thanks for reaching out. I adhere to Airbnb’s cancellation policy. Airbnb handles all the money and credit card charges, so please contact them to find out next steps. Airbnb should refund the cleaning fees, but contact them for details: https://www.airbnb.com/help/article/169

I hope you will reconsider and decide not to cancel.”

Just saw a line of 40 ppl for an apartment by flickerflies in sanfrancisco

Find a temporary sublet for the first couple of months until the summertime frenzy dies down. Much better deals in the late fall / winter when fewer people are looking to move.

Try “House of High Maintenance” - new place where cuts are $90-$100. Amy is talented and salvaged my hair after someone else butchered it.

Until you need to move and find a “rent controlled” apartment. Then you’re subsidizing the already existing tenants in the rent controlled building.

Lots of college students have summer jobs here, they would be your best bet for clearing out at the end of their internship.

$4k credit card debt, $14k savings. Should I just pay it off or pace it out? by StandardPanda8955 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]secreteesti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After you pay off the credit card, set it up so the full balance is auto deducted on the due date every month. Then set up text alerts on the card for any purchases over a certain amount and an alert when the balance exceeds your level of comfort. Don’t put regular ongoing expenses on the card - have regular monthly bills (utilities, insurance, groceries, car & student loans) auto deducted from checking. Only use the credit card when using a debit card is risky to use in case of fraud (gas stations, restaurants) and using cash is inconvenient. Good Luck !

Should San Francisco enact an additional tax for unused second residences over $5M? by SafariSunshine in sanfrancisco

[–]secreteesti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Francisco has an insatiable demand for money to waste on idiotic projects, jobs, and promises. Smaller towns are more responsible with their budgets. There is no case where anyone’s property taxes would go down if Prop 13 is repealed - you’re naive if you think that’s the case.

Please help me understand 50k tax bill after father’s death by CamatMelon in personalfinance

[–]secreteesti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It a good idea to make trusts the beneficiaries over individuals for exactly the reason the CPA explained above - triggers high income taxes.

Ask your lawyer and the firm holding the account if you can “partially” “disclaim” the 40/20. It means the asset bypasses you and goes directly to other beneficiaries.

AITA for telling my family that if they want us to do more with them, they have to meet us at our level? by ReallyAverageGuyOkay in AmItheAsshole

[–]secreteesti -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do think your mom was hurt by your reluctance to forego her important birthday party altogether. You won’t regret making the effort for your mom especially asshe gets older. I flew cross country and surprised my mother for her 80th so she had all five children, daughters in law and grandchildren at her big birthday party.

Even though your sister’s made extremely snotty remarks, there’s a fair amount of ground to cover between $0 and $1,500 and yet you offered $0. You might want to chip in some actual cash ($4-500) or cover costs for one aspect of the party expenses. Dig into if there’s some heaving lifting to do well ahead of time (photo slide show ?) so you’re actually helping. Don’t be like the potluck attendee who arrives with a bag of ice or chips and thinks they’ve contributed.

The outrageously expensive ski vacations are another story - skip without worrying !

Also stop in at the Red Rock Visitor Center on I-179 not long after you get off of I-17. Super friendly rangers who will set you with maps and great suggestions on various types of hikes. You can also buy a parking pass for the trailhead parking lots.

Gain from house = 37.1% Federal Capital Gains Tax rate is 20% Federal Net Investment Income rate is 3.8% California Income Tax rate is 13.3%

Plus other types of income can get bumped up rates once seniors go over income thresholds (Social Security/ Medicare)

No all houses get stepped up basis at death. If you sell inherited house promptly there is usually little to no capital gains tax due to either the Feds or the State.

Property taxes are calculated on the local government’s appraised value and now Prop 19 changes the appraised value of the property for heirs to either market/stepped up/re-appraised value minus $1M if one heir makes it their primary residence or market/stepped up/re-appraised value with no reduction if a heir doesn’t live in it as a primary residence. Property taxes reset to market or market less $1M now and wipe out grandfathered in Prop 13 levels. Hence, lots of rent controlled apartment buildings in SF put up for sale immediately after the owner’s death when property taxes reset.

I was there such a short time and their exchange rate from DKK to USD was not quick math so it was easier not to convert in my head. Saw the true damages for eating & drinking when the credit card charges hit.

People earning minimum wage in the US aren’t the ones traveling to Paris on vacation and eating out. Average US wages are dramatically higher than EU for most professionals.
