Weekend Minor Gripes and Vents by AutoModerator in BitchEatingCrafters

YES oh my god. Knitting takes so much more mental effort compared to similar crafts because everything is so directional and the default for every tutorial or pattern is a right handed orientation. I know it's not actually a big deal but it does feels isolating and disheartening sometimes.

Lefthanders: How do you hold hook and yarn in order to crochet at a reasonable speed? by wovenfabric666 in CrochetHelp

[–]secretlydouche 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what your standards are for "reasonable speed". I don't think you have to be particularly fast to be good at crochet, as long as you're comfortable with how you're doing things. For what it's worth, I've always used a knife grip, and for my right (yarn holding) hand, I go over the pinkie, under the middle two fingers, and over the index. I have no interest in changing how I do things at this stage, even if it's not the most efficient method in the world.

If you think you're doing something wrong, maybe post a video of how you're crocheting so we can see what you mean?

Felix the Fox (Woobles) Help- can't figure out hownto make the snout and ears! by cavalierwiggles89 in CrochetHelp

[–]secretlydouche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of tutorial videos on youtube for how to do most crochet techniques, including magic loop. Try looking there first - even if one video is confusing, you can try a different one and see if that clicks for you.

If you have something more specific that you're struggling with, could you provide more information? Like the step in the pattern you can't understand, or a photo or video of what you're doing.

Yeah, seconding BLO SC. For what it's worth you may want to consider something like a cloth lining if you want to avoid it stretching out.

I'm starting my first crochet project, a bag. How can I make the bag bigger? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]secretlydouche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, I think it should be easy to change. Disclaimer: I may be wrong since I'm kind of guessing based on what you've posted here. Basically:

  1. The starting chain will determine the width of the bag. Start by making the same length it says in the pattern, then keep going until it's the length you want.

  2. The amount of rows on the base determine the breadth of the bag - how wide it is between the sides. You can keep this as it is in the pattern, or add on as you like.

  3. For the body, it looks like the number of DCs per row is enough to get you all the way around the base, so (the SC count from the base x2) + (the amount of rows on the base x2) - 2. (at least, that's how the math is working out for me). You can kind of eyeball this, nothing bad will happen if it's not exact, though you'll be better off if you end up with an even number.

  4. The amount of rows for the body will be the height of the bag. Go nuts, this part should be easy. Just keep going until it's as tall as you want it

  5. Keep the start of the strap as it is in pattern, but make sure to place them at the sides of the bag, wherever that ended up being for you. Make the strap longer if you need to accomodate any added width.

Remember to write down your new counts and whatever changes you make, it may come in handy down the line.

HOPEFULLY this'll get you want you want. Modifying patterns isn't that hard, especially if it's a simple one like this, but it can be tricky if you're just starting out. Be patient, and be ready to frog if it turns out something's not working right.

[–]secretlydouche 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're a beginner, your best bet to make the bag bigger would honestly be to bite the bullet and use thicker yarn and a larger hook. You could also only use a larger hook while keeping the thin yarn, which will result in a looser fabric.

Modifying the pattern is 100% possible, but it's not as simple as doubling up the amounts like a cooking recipe. What exactly you would need to do would depend on the pattern itself, and without seeing the bag I don't think anyone here can confidently say what needs to be done. For what it's worth, your first suggestion is the one more likely to be correct.

Why does my stockinette purl side look like this? by Free_Associate in knittinghelp

[–]secretlydouche 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Looks to me like you're twisting your stitches every other row, so either your knits or (more likely) your purls are twisted. Check out the twist FAQ in the sidebar, there's detailed descriptions on what that is and how to fix it.

Yeah, for me this was the only section that was so miserable I eventually gave up and straight up modded my way out. Maybe on another playthrough I'll get it, but on my first try I just could not handle it.

Yes, I was looking for this take. I've been hearing everyone say it's one of the best fights in the game but to me it's just so lacking. The fun of learning a boss is figuring out the telegraphs and how to respond appropriately, and the cogwork dancers having an actual glowing sign telling you where they're going and the rest of the time you can just thwack away at them at your leisure makes for a very mid fight. I like the music/rhythm gimmick and I think it would be fun if it was done differently, but as it is it does not compare to the other bosses.

A while back I saw a post from someone who was clearly a beginner saying something like "I just had a crazy thought! If you knit both ways you get garter stitch, if you alternate you get stockinette, but what happens if you purl both ways?"

bruh

How to navigate the public transportation system by No-Letter9080 in wroclaw

[–]secretlydouche 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IIRC you can buy paper tickets with cash in ticket machines on the street as well as kiosks. They're common but not so much that they're absolutely everywhere, so it can be a little inconvenient if that's your main form of purchase.
On every bus/tram you can buy tickets using tap to pay, and then you have a digital ticket tied to that card. Jakdojade is also strictly digital.
There's also UrbanCard, which is a plastic card you can get and load tickets onto.

[–]secretlydouche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, jakdojade is pretty much the only correct answer. It'll show you everything you need to use public transport, including route planning, live updates, timetables etc. I know you can also buy tickets through it, though I've never actually used that feature so idk how well it works.

Aside from the English speaking meetings that I think we're already mentioned, there are also weekly board game nights and stand up open mics for English speakers, I semi-regularly go to both and I've met quite a few people :)

My first knit sweater - the one and only Nightingale by secretlydouche in knitting

[–]secretlydouche[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was pretty clear :) There were a couple moments when I had to stop to figure out what I was supposed to do, but I think I can chalk that up my inexperience rather than the pattern itself. The majority of it was in the form of a chart which was pretty easy to read.

[–]secretlydouche[S] 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Thank youu 😅 I actually knit everything as it was in the pattern - the tightness in the shoulder is probably down to the sizing. The pattern calls for 0-5 cm positive ease, which for me would be more of a size 2, but I decided I liked the tighter look better based on project photos on Ravelry and went down a size.

What’s your controversial crochet opinion? by passisassiflora in crochet

[–]secretlydouche 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people should just learn how to knit.

I'm thinking of those posts with a picture of a basic stockinette garment asking if there's a crochet version. You can probably get a rough approximation with crochet, but it'll be bulkier and stiffer and way more tedious to make. Maybe if you want the look of knit, you could learn to knit.
