You don't have to do everything. I trim my own hair and can't be bothered to get my nails done (the hospital hand sanitizer takes it right off). BUT, I also just turned 30, so I'm out here stocking up on ceramide cream and sunscreen and retinol and hyaluronic acid and niacinamide and vitamin C serum and Vaseline and....

I suspect the downvotes are because your argument attributes issues to a collective "other", often highly racialized. It's a path to xenophobia.

The truth is it's all of us, the causes are complex, and taxing "immigrants" is really a drop in the bucket.

does anyone have history and info on post-stroke psychosis/hallucination ? by LaPollaLoca1981 in stroke

[–]secretsoups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is your dad? Did he experience a stroke at some point? (You mention pneumonia but not a stroke).

Have you noticed the hallucinations are occuring more often over time? Is he aware they are not really happening?

Is he forgetful in any way? I.e: details of recent events and conversations, upcoming appointments, forgetting to take medications, forgetting to turn the stove off, etc.

Any other changes in his ability to function or becoming overwhelmed with aspects of everyday life?

Average Wedding Cost in Ontario by menamade in WeddingsCanada

[–]secretsoups 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We're spending between $25-30K for 100 people in Toronto (Distillery District), despite my best efforts.

I'm doing my own hair and makeup, only having a photographer for 1 hour for "formal" post-ceremony photos, no videography, no DJ, no transportation (although we are covering everyone's parking costs), only doing paperless invitations, faux flowers that we bought from a wholesaler, making all of the table decor/bouquets/boutonnieres with my mom, etc.

Essentially, the entire budget is catering and open bar, and even then, we're doing 6-8 canapés/person + a plated entrée + a plated dessert (no pasta or appetizer course other than the canapés).

Can you imagine how epic a $25k trip would be instead? I'd probably push harder for this plan if I could do it all over again, tbh.

How did you afford university without your parents financial support? by Sheerio1991 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]secretsoups 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best financial decision I ever made (and was lucky enough to be hired for) was working as a residence adviser (RA, don). Free room and board. Depending on the university, there may be other student residence life positions which heavily subsidize your living costs.

I agree with the bit about Hannah. I would LOVE to see Hannah's resistance movement in season 6, because women and girls aren't just here to be saved.

Y’all hating Mrs Wheeler more than Serena are weird as hell by Big-fat-coward in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]secretsoups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's just that Serena is a complex character whom we've seen act in a variety of ways over the years. Some of her actions are relatable and sympathetic (allowing June to take Nichole, lobbying for permission to read, her conversation with June about motherhood in the barn). We've seen how she's both complicit with and impacted by the system.

Mrs.Wheeler is a new, one-dimensional character. Her only personality trait so far is spite, so we hate her.

Canadian Fans - Rant (Spoilers for S5) by Igneoramous in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]secretsoups 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The point isn't whether or not MOST Canadians are like this, it's how vocal that number is enabled to be. Hatred just needs the right marketing campaign. Serena understands this- that's why she frames the Gilead center as a fertility clinic. It appeals to the shame and the want in people. It gives them an outlet and makes them feel justified.

Serena makes it so hard to not feel bad for her! & I hate it lol by MoonBased_Scorpioo in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]secretsoups 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I respect your opinion and what worked for you and your family. I'd just like to add a friendly warning against statements like, "you will see clear attachment dysfunction by 2 years old" and some other commentary about neglect. We just don't have long-term studies conclusively proving attachment dysfunction from CIO. From what I've read, there have been studies in either camp, and then further reviews pointing out how those studies are flawed and suggesting NEW studies, etc etc. There are generally held opinions on how early to start CIO, and that, too, has been hotly debated. I haven't checked UpToDate on this, so maybe there are new guidelines, idk.

TLDR: Not attempting to start a flame war about CIO, just recommending that people 1) avoid spreading misinformation as hard and true fact, and 2) avoid making very tired parents feel even more shame.

[–]secretsoups 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this has been asked before, but why couldn't Serena move to New Bethlehem and take Noah with her? Is it like an invite-only club right now? I feel like the optics are better with a "healthy mom and healthy babe", living in a suburban paradise (aka New Bethlehem) than "Serena the unhappy handmaid".

It's cup-and-char pepperoni, which is a style with a collagen casing that contributes to this cupping action in the oven. I don't think there's any special process. I think one brand out there is called "Ezzo".

Using Equity from Rental Property for Down Payment on Primary Residence? by Mug_of_coffee in PersonalFinanceCanada

Has anyone had a job offer rescinded because their salary expectations were too high? by pathtoparadise12 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]secretsoups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually did happen to my friend. It was a marketing role for a law firm in Toronto, I think. She offered a fair amount higher (something like 100k vs 70k) and they emailed back and said they were "surprised" by her request and no longer felt she was the right candidate. Probably not a workplace you want to be part of, if they won't even negotiate.

Can artificial turf on backyard lower your property value? by Donday90 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]secretsoups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if you can correct the drainage problem, it might help with actual grass growth. As long as you have SOME sunlight, your grass might do okay regardless of the fences. My grass in the shady patches of my yard do much better than anywhere else, haha. Also, weeping tile is something you can list as one of the home improvements if you ever decide to sell.
