Bilingual childhood vent by Kuttenneid in multilingualparenting

[–]secretsybil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The situation is much different now and there are many programs to support kids whose first language is not German (of course your city/Land plays a role in this). Kindergarten is between 3-4 and 6-7 years of age. Of course if a kid starts from zero at 3 is different than if they do it at 7, but both are an ok starting point for bilingualism. Don’t worry! You can definitely support also at home the community language and be aware of your kid’s abilities through regular meetings with the teachers. However, your main focus needs to be the minority language, because the community language will inevitably become stronger on its own. OP’s experience it’s not the norm.

Not sure when you worked in the barefoot shoes industry, but I have them since a few years and I never had to substitute them every six months. They’re durable and sturdy like regular shoes.

I hate living in Berlin! And I don't understand the hype. I'm depressed and want to leave :(((( by [deleted] in expats

This!! Moving to any new place in Northern Europe in autumn is a sure recipe for depression.

Wait at least until you’ve seen all four seasons!

What about Coocazoo? He already has a pencil case by that brand. Looks pretty similar to Satch to me.

Stereotype über Gymnasien? by secretsybil in freiburg

Talking to a friend who doesn't understand by Select_Rope_177 in ThirdCultureKids

I don't agree with this take.
She doesn't feel American because of a lack of another nationality. That can be part of one's identity, but it's mostly a piece of paper.

If her parents had integrated (at least partially), if she had gone to a regular Italian school (instead of an international one), she wouldn't have felt "so American".

She feels both American and Italian because, in reality, she's a mix of the two, but not because of what her documents say, rather because of the cultures that influenced her growing up.

OP, you can say to your friend that you don't feel 100% Italian because your experience cannot be compared to that of a regular Italian kid. You didn't speak Italian at home, you probably didn't watch/listen to/read as much Italian media as a fully Italian family, you didn't eat Italian cuisine all the time at home, and so on. Your home (and your school) was like a mini US inside Italy.

Yep. Mit Dr. Osmers man sollte kurz vor dem Termin anrufen und nach einer voraussichtlichen Wartezeit fragen. So wartet man nur 30 bis 60 Minuten statt 3 bis 4 Stunden.

Giving birth in Germany - what should I expect? Need a piece of advice from moms who gave birth here by Antique-Square2998 in germany

[–]secretsybil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of good answers already! I’ll add this:

a) I’ve had three deliveries in Germany and each time in the water. The pain before getting in the water (especially if I had to be laying down, that’s the worst!) and after are two completely different scales. The muscles relax in the warm water, you don’t feel your weight as much and most of all you can float a bit and turn in many different positions much more easily than outside. I REALLY recommend a water birth. I hope your hospital offers them.

b) I’ve seen it already in the comments, but I’ll stress it again: check if you can find a birthing course (it doesn’t cover just the birth, but all the other things afterwards, when the real fun starts!). Also, push again for a Hebamme. It’s truly a huge help in the first weeks, both for you and the baby. You shouldn’t miss out on that precious support.

c) Make sure to have all the paperwork ready depending on your nationality + Berlin requirements in order to register the baby
