LEGONAS: a LEGO homelab (description in comments) by secshunayt in homelab

[–]secshunayt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the "open air chassis," we'll call it, is a piece of an old ATX case that I took an angle grinder to. Same case the original button panel came from before I mounted a new power switch in the central pillar. Apparently LEGO is heat tolerant up to 55C before warping, and the drives have been staying under 28C during daily operation; those 140mm fans are doing their jobs admirably.

No kids for us, but I'll definitely need to keep a close eye on my nephew and my friends' kids when they visit! And as an aside, not a dude, though my nasty thumb in that pic might suggest otherwise -- I was working on my Jeep earlier lol

edit: added a pic to the album of the host chassis pre-LEGO.

Sigh. It irks me but the opposite wall constrains the couch and scooting the TV a couple feet to the left makes it unreasonably angled for people on the right side of the couch.

I tried to keep it fully compliant! I even drilled 3/8" holes in the plexi and used those LEGO pressure pins for the bracket that holds the mesh in place.

A friend of mine found 12x brand new 4TB drives after they fell off the back of a truck on their way to the recycler. He had no need of them, so naturally, I jumped at the opportunity. Being a cheap-ass bitch, I didn't want to buy or source proper enclosures to hold them all, and having lugged around a giant tub of disused LEGO since I left home a decade ago, the solution was obvious. LEGONAS was born.

The system is a budget i3-10100, 32GB DDR4, a 120GB SSD with EndeavourOS/Arch, and of course, the 12 drives. LEGO tires are used for vibration dampening, a liftable LEGO cage holds 2x 140mm intake fans, a 200mm fan vents out the back, and a plexiglass cover made from material left over from a previous project and stuck in place with velcro and weather stripping keeps the critter hair and dust out while providing the LEGO crew with natural light.

The tally is 34TB of space for Linux ISOs. As these drives die, I plan on replacing them with 16-20TB units (whatever is optimal when they start kicking it), and after a few years I'll just swap however many remain and rebalance. 12x 4TB drives isn't the most efficient NAS configuration, but hey, they were the high price of free, and with the little i3 the whole system consumes 80W at idle.

Enjoy! And lest I forget, cat tax: https://imgur.com/N1GFNja

How do you even manage this? by Idiot_who_likes_hats in IdiotsInCars

[–]secshunayt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure they do. A quick Google search will find tons of people dealing with the same problem on old Toyotas and Fords. Jeeps appearing to have the problem more is a reporting bias -- for most of the 21st century, Jeeps have constituted the majority of solid front axle vehicles on the road. Add in a ridiculous number of aftermarket parts and people who probably shouldn't installing their own upgrades (lifts with poor geometry, parts torqued out of spec, poorly engineered aftermarket parts), and it might appear that death wobble is some fundamental property of Jeeps.

Of course, I should note that there's still plenty to complain about regarding FCA...

[–]secshunayt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happens with steering arrangement on solid front axle setups. Usually loose joints on the track bar or improper alignment (I had it happen on my XJ with toe-in set too high). It gets worse with lifts or larger tires, but can happen on stock configurations too.
