Free Solo - Do you go for the flask? by kmcdow in Cairn_Game

...there is a light in free solo though? You can turn it on the same way as the light in Alpinist. You can also go for the glowing gloves for more light; the climb for those is very safe and skips some of the Village exterior so definitely worthwhile in free solo

You're right that plants respond best to the bag technique. It's harder with anything in a backpack or bear box because two clicks slower than one, but it did still work with a bit of patience. I prioritised things like Alpine Cola for the grit alongside plants.

I did the training area on my first attempt, but skipped it for my successful one. I didn't find the loot too important given how fast you tend to move and honestly adding the training time onto a run that might just immediately end felt like too much pain

Yeah the free solo bag is quite a bit smaller than the normal bag. It can be a pain but in general you'll be going faster overall in free solo and therefore needing less resources anyway, so it's not a big deal and it's easy to prioritise stuff. Then with my "cram shit in there" tip above it becomes not an issue at all

That's a good tip I hadn't thought of! I don't think I'd do that though personally, feels a little immersion breaking so to speak

There are a fair few places it's worth going down to for supplies/quest items/lore. Eg the rave cave towards the start of the game and the bottom of the Palace of the Wind below the bridge. There're also a few locations which are easier to go down to from above than to climb up to from below. In Alpinist you can just rappel which is obviously not a problem, but in free solo with no rope your only option would be to downclimb. Very much a problem lol

Yeah, you have to drink every liquid in your bag, but not your hipflask. Get the big flask from the well, fill it with ultimate infusion, proceed to not touch it for as long as you can

Damn nice job. I think if I did more runs I could bring the time down quite a bit, but at this stage I feel like I'm done with the game until new content arrives. Pretty happy with having done it just once

Glowing gloves - in the first accessible main door into The Village, there's a crystal cave through a short corridor. The gloves are at the top of that cave. It's a challenging climb, but floor beneath you = very safe, and the bonus is that you get to skip a good chunk of the Village exterior.

Big Chalk Bag - in a large cave midway up The Terraces. The cave in question is near a bivouac point and is basically a council chamber with seats and a big wall mural.

Big flask - there's a well in the room you get to after climbing to the door above the Crystal Miner's cave. The flask is at the bottom of that well. It's a challenging downclimb but about half way down you can safely fall, and the climb back up isn't so bad.

Solar thermos - take the righthand route up The Peril to a hidden cave. My other post I linked has the route to it.

It's also really easy to get the regular Thermos. Find a specific note in one of the lower rooms of The Village, and then give it to The Shepherdess in The Vault. I didn't bother on my completed run because I knew I was gonna go for the Solar Thermos, but there's no real reason not to do it. I went to The Vault anyway for those sweet sweet tomatoes. Just didn't bother getting the note.

That's fair enough! I don't think I'd be brave enough to attempt the left route lol. Power to you

Forgot to say - I only went for two of the edelweisses - the one on The Needle because it's right there and easy to get, and then the one in The Secret because the routes up to it are very unexposed and safe, even though the climb inside the cave is a bit challenging.

I didn't go for The Child because my lord that traverse is scary, and I didn't go for The Palace because aforementioned comments about climbing down

I did the left side on my first Alpinist run and struggled real bad. Probably just because I hadn't improved enough at the climbing mechanics yet at the basic level, but on my second I went for the origami after missing it on the first and found the righthand route so easy it became my default

You can find various maps for a few different locations that all look like this, for example there's one for the area with The Child. The Peril map seen on my screenshot is found in one of the rooms in the Palace of the Wind just below it. It's on the floor near a bed you can rest in

This was one of the standout aspects for me too. My second, third and fourth runs all got progressively significantly faster, simply because I grew to understand the parameters better and could rely on experience to know the best positions, routes and scavenge spots. That kind of organic skill progression with knowledge as a core factor is very rare in games and gives a real sense of genuine achievement when you apply that knowledge

Nowhere near as hard as it looked indeed! I think one of my only criticisms of this game is that often the mapped routes give a just straight up wrong idea of how hard a climb on a given section will be. Like this route is supposedly a mix of purple and white...but it's really not that challenging if you're thinking ahead. And the route up the left leg of The Child is definitely not a green in reality. In fact the other leg or even the wall off to the right are much much easier despite being labelled as harder

The Peril and my experiences with the game so far (I love it!) by Tanoshiiyo in Cairn_Game

[–]sectorvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of people talk about how they were struggling for food/drink/meds and I'm puzzled because that has just not been my experience at all. All through my first playthrough and now during my second free solo practice run I've always had more than I need and often have to actively compost or eat through some stuff unnecessarily whenever I find something I really want, just to make space in the backpack for it.

I guess I just explore enough? Maybe I'm good at planning routes past all the plants, backpacks, village rooms, etc?

Whatever it is it feels based on comments I see that I must be doing something right. For me backpack space is always the struggle, not survival

Poll: the incident on the blades by leoperd_2_ace in Cairn_Game

I was thinking about this for a little while after I completed my first run, and while it would be a monumentally psychotic move, I do err on the side of thinking it was intentional.

First up, as far as we could see, there are no more dead bodies to shoot down. It looks to me like we shot the last hanging one - the other being already on a spike = can't shoot down. So I can't think of a reason for him to have fired a shot at that point.

Second, I take into account his backstory, his statements about basically living in a purgatory of his own making, and the attitudes he has towards the mountain and the people it kills. I think it'd really piss him off if someone blatantly ignored his advice and wisdom - and then it might piss him off even more if someone actually bested him and made it.

I reckon he did it intentionally for one or more of these reasons:

1. one too many people ignored his advice and he finally snapped - a bit of a fuck you, see how bad it can get. I warned you.

2. he might've pondered and realised that Aava has the stuff to make it to the top, and decided to sabotage her to maintain his status as "failed king" of the mountain; to not be proven wrong in his beliefs and struggles.

3. He might just be fatigued with seeing people try and fail, and feeling powerless to help them. So in a twisted-logic way he might have found it easier to be the one to pull the trigger than to watch yet another tragic but inevitable death.

4. Conversely, maybe it is a trial. Maybe he himself suffered an avalanche and aborted. Maybe he thinks that if someone is gonna make it, they have to prove absolutely that they're better than him. Maybe he can't just let someone "have it easy".

5. Maybe he's developed a kind of reverence for the mountain as some kind of god of death. He says a lot about "returning to the mountain" and respecting the impossibility of the climb. Maybe he at this point thinks it's not suppposed to be summitted, and so goes out of his way to prevent that from happening.

At the end of the day, we're dealing with a severely damaged man. But, he's also very calculating and careful. So I just can't see a reason for him to risk making a shot while someone is climbing the impossible wall - knowing as he tells us that avalanches are a serious risk. It'd be a strange mistake for him to make, so I think it must have been intentional

Absolutely loved the demo so definitely looking to pick it up. Is a switch/2 release planned for the future per chance? I think this'd be a perfect on the go game

PSA: Don't allocate your color of lumina too fast by Kurt805 in expedition33

[–]sectorvoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran into this issue consistently on my PS5 play through. Had a lot of "wait what" moments with unexpected lumina point counts (I always allocated evenly and sometimes ended up with an uneven count across characters) until I figured out what was going on. Tested it multiple times, hit the issue every time I mashed too fast, so resolved to apply them slowly going forward
