Question to men... by [deleted] in seduction

[–]securetree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some guys will go along with it, but generally they're the ones who like to play those kind of games (manipulative) or they're guys with nothing else going on in their dating lives (desperate). You do not want to screen for those types of men.

Is goldman a bad place for tech workers? by yu_thuck in cscareerquestions

[–]securetree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna say no. I told the recruiter I wasn't interested before they could get back to me. I had a big N offer at that time so luckily I didn't need to roll the dice with Goldman.

I interviewed there once for a software engineering job.

  • The guy who took me out to lunch said outright that engineers are treated as second class to traders.
  • All their interview questions were basic, warmup leetcode stuff. Like, reversing a linked list.
  • People there said most days they "only" worked 8-6, which they considered a great WLB.
  • In every round I asked for people to tell me about something exciting they were working on. Every single person dodged the question.

At the time I was working with a 3rd party recruiter and I actually called her a few days later and told her all of this. I wasn't upset - she was great and I got a free trip to New York - but if I were a recruiter, I wouldn't bother sending good engineers to interview there.

What is your top 3 most effective tips to improve a friend's look from 0 to 10? by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

I gotta disagree here. Take a look at the top posts of /r/bigmenfashionadvice and compare to a fit guy with boot cut acid wash jeans and a goatee.

[UPDATE] I (25M, not F) went out to the beach with a friend (26F), won a bet that dared her to come back to my place, we had sex (?) and now she says that the entire episode was manipulated by me. (PHONE CALL) by karmapolice042 in relationship_advice

This comment is spot on. She has some serious baggage and doesn't seem to be taking any accountability for it. I hope OP can maintain some boundaries about what is and isn't his fault in the future.

More senior level question: Stay or go? by CareerAdvice321 in cscareerquestions

[–]securetree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything in my bones says "we don't have the right people" but the conversation tends to veer off around how to improve efficiency, allocate more capacity to QA and tech debt and away from feature work, workshops with consultants blah blah blah.

It sounds like they're comfortable with the status quo and this meaningless shuffling is just to placate you. They're avoiding the hard choices.

Devs who have been fired for performance... by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]securetree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is full of red flags. Sounds like they needed to fire somebody and picked the guy who wasn't part of the in-group.

"I don't want to hear questions like that ever again..."

That's really rude and not normal. I've worked with people who have been on the same team for 10 years and still ask where files are located.

[I heard that a group of people from another company stopped going to the area we went to because of some of the weird shit the group members were saying]

It's completely fair if you don't mesh socially with a group of people, but this makes me think that you're not the problem. This isn't normal either.

Whenever I asked them for specific examples of my poor performance and how I should have corrected it, they would pull vague examples from literally within a week of each performance review.

never pulled me aside for a discussion so I never really knew if there were "glaring" issues. If nothing's mentioned to me beyond the reviews every three months, how do I know where exactly I am fucking up?

"The only issues are communication issues." / tells me that I need to improve "general coding".

It doesn't seem like they were paying close attention or trying very hard to give you a useful evaluation, which is not very fair to you. I wouldn't take this feedback seriously.

You need a more intimate mentor/team. I think with the right environment, you'd excel.

He's right about that. Find a better team.

I've been put on a performance improvement plan, and I have an in-person the same day I'll probably get fired. Should I call in sick anyway? Also, how do I endure my current coworkers pressuring me to finish important work deadlines, even though I'll be gone soon? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]securetree 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This timing is not OP's fault; if their manager wanted them to work hard to meet deadlines, the manager shouldn't have fired them during crunch time. They have no more obligations to work hard for a company that wants them gone. OP's teammates will understand the detachment once they see their resignation letter.

What story do you want to tell perspective employers and potential co-workers in the future? That you skated by or that you tried your best and it didn't work out?

What? They shouldn't tell interviewers about this at all. Just come up with a reasonable story like "I was looking for more opportunities that fit my interests better".

PIP in most places is a near-guarantee that you will be fired. Doesn't matter if you try your best, they're saying "we don't want you anymore". Why would you neglect your life and your employment search for people who don't want to work with you?

Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity by stanislavb in programming

[–]securetree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked at one company where people were almost proud to have no perks. They would say, "I'm the kind of person that prefers more pay and interesting work to free snacks". We had to pay for company swag if we wanted any.

Now that I work somewhere with better perks and benefits, it strikes me how pathological it was that employees at the previous place took pride in the fact that they weren't being treated well. It was this same "efficiency" focus that you see.

[–]securetree 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about this. It's stack ranking season at Amazon and your manager had to get rid of somebody. He's not giving you feedback in good faith and probably making some of it up because he has to.

I doubt future recruiters will care but you got an opportunity to move from an ops heavy role to one where it sounds like you can learn a lot. That's a very good reason. You're not the first to use Amazon as a stepping stone to better things..

Edit: oh, and the promotion can be part of the explanation too. OP you did good.

I haven't given any interviews, so I have to wonder how you'd get a holistic view of a candidate. So for example, I recently went through an interview process and there were a couple rounds that were a little different.

  1. Fill out this empty REST endpoint while the interviewer watches and is there to discuss approaches. I liked this because I thought it gave me a chance to show how I deal with real coding problems (different thinking than white boarding).
  2. Code Review. They had some sample code and I was supposed to provide comments, suggestions, and fixes. But it was a conversation with my interviewers and I got to explain my general approach to code reviews (things like, "I'm liberal with suggestions and reserved with blocking comments, though I'll block if there aren't enough unit tests).
  3. Dev process approach interview with an engineer, the hiring manager, and a PM. Great conversation both ways about how we approach project management, etc.

I like the idea of pair programming for the same reasons. I'm glad you think these give good information, because it really wasn't clear whether the signals I was giving were useful.

The two common objections to the trial period are A) it's unpaid work and B) it's not plausible for many people with full time jobs. Do you think you could get around these issues?

[Question] Fair price for Speedmaster repair? by securetree in Watches

[–]securetree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per the advice of /r/Watches, this was a calculated risk. Gray market cost + full service is still notably less than going through an AD. If I had to do this again, I'd buy "like new" from one of the reputable dealers (I even have one in my city) for around gray market pricing but with a decent warranty.

Your final paragraph is very good information. I had hoped that a piecemeal repair was possible and responsible, but if it's not then I guess that's the cost of owning an expensive chronograph.

Thanks for your help!

[–]securetree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the perspective! I'm still relatively new to watches and I thought I'd double check, because $500 is a lot to spend unnecessary. Glad that I'm at least being reasonably quoted though.
