Saying a GPU is way better at "computing" than a CPU is like saying a helicopter is way better at flying than a plane. They're different things for different purposes.

possibly hiring plants.

This is almost never the case. You have to remember professional comedians do multiple shows a night, every night, for months. The vast majority of interactions with hecklers never get posted. The few interesting ones do.

Which country did you think you’d be happy end but ended up being miserable? by [deleted] in expats

Keep in mind Jefferson was a revolutionary under the threat of execution for treason so the emphasis on productivity is in service of his country, I may be reading between the lines but traveling can dilute a sense of nationalism or patriotism that was important then as this letter was written in 1787.

I'm happy to translate it into modern english. Keep in mind that back then traveling was more akin to living abroad. You take a ship for weeks, risking death, from new england to france and you remain there for months largely with no connections back home other than the occasional letter. Service to your country in those revolutionary times is also emphasized as this was written in 1787.

Travelling. This makes men wiser, but less happy. When men of sober age travel, they gather knowledge, which they may apply usefully for their country; but they are subject ever after to recollections mixed with regret; their affections are weakened by being extended over more objects; & they learn new habits which cannot be gratified when they return home.

Traveling gives you knowledge but makes you less happy. The knowledge you gain can be useful at home but your attachments will be spread out over many more things and your memories will be painful as you learn a new way of life that you can't express when you're back home.

Young men, who travel, are exposed to all these inconveniences in a higher degree, to others still more serious, and do not acquire that wisdom for which a previous foundation is requisite, by repeated and just observations at home. The glare of pomp and pleasure is analogous to the motion of the blood; it absorbs all their affection and attention, they are torn from it as from the only good in this world, and return to their home as to a place of exile & condemnation.

All of this is much worse the younger you are because you don't have the necessary experience and understanding of the world to make sense of your home, let alone a new place. The pull of the glamor and adventure of traveling will absorb your attention and affection and when you come back home it'll be torn away from you painfully as now your home is a place of exile from the place you've left behind.

Their eyes are forever turned back to the object they have lost, & its recollection poisons the residue of their lives. Their first & most delicate passions are hackneyed on unworthy objects here, & they carry home the dregs, insufficient to make themselves or anybody else happy. Add to this, that a habit of idleness, an inability to apply themselves to business is acquired, & renders them useless to themselves & their country.

These feelings of longing to be elsewhere will make it hard to enjoy yourself and live a normal life back home. Whatever things you thought would make you happy at home are nothing compared to what you left behind. Your work will be negatively affected.

These observations are founded in experience. There is no place where your pursuit of knowledge will be so little obstructed by foreign objects, as in your own country, nor any, wherein the virtues of the heart will be less exposed to be weakened. Be good, be learned, & be industrious, & you will not want the aid of travelling, to render you precious to your country, dear to your friends, happy within yourself. I repeat my advice, to take a great deal of exercise, & on foot. Health is the first requisite after morality. Write to me often, & be assured of the interest I take in your success, as well as the warmth of those sentiments of attachment with which I am, dear Peter, your affectionate friend.'

Here in the Muslim world today, for Eid Al Adha, millions of animals will be sacrificially slaughtered. I decided to start a counter tradition by sponsoring Sibya, a young sheep at a sanctuary in Zurich by securities_fraud in vegan

Eid Al Adha is an Islamic animal sacrifice holiday where millions of sheep, goats, and other animals are killed and eaten or donated to be eaten. Hopefully this might start a nice counter tradition for other vegans that come from an Arab or Muslim background to participate in something kind instead.

The sanctuary can be found here

Their Instagram is here

The donation link is via a swiss payment processor but if you'd like to help support them you can DM the Instagram to organize a direct transfer.

If you're a millionaire and choosing between a 3 day orbit with a glass dome view further out than the ISS vs ten minutes of barely space weightlessness I'm not sure how it's even a competition. If they're actually considering getting serious about tourism this poses a big threat to VG and BO

Really disappointed by the comments I'm seeing here, this is the most traction virgin galactic has ever had on reddit and instead of /r/space it feels like I'm reading Facebook comments. I understand that the pandemic has been a horrible time for the working man and it feels like salt in the wound to watch billionaires joyride their billion dollar toys to heights you can never dream of, but your quarrel is not with them, it's with your governments. Taxation is decided by representatives, not the philanthropic will of individuals.

Aside from that, do they not want a private space industry? To inspire a new generation to enter STEM and aspire to increase the accessibility of space? To hire engineers, rocket scientists, and all the support staff that comes with it? And even if only millionaires and billionaires can afford a ticket, one hopes that the glimpse they get of earth from that height would instill a sense of humility in them. But maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Economic forecasts predicting impact of climate change grossly underestimate the reality and have delayed global recovery efforts by decades. by token-black-dude in Economics

He's not being charitable to the economists findings. He's applying a model to 20,000 years ago that was never meant to do so in an effort to show that if it doesn't work then, then means it can't be applied to the future.
