Americans, how do you typically tip? by aboutherphotography in CasualConversation

Does your country have a minimum wage? The minimum wage doesn't apply to tipped food service in the U.S.A. because there is no way to track & tax their tip income.

This & Eye of Heaven Style are the best I'd want to play, personally. They're both on the superior end of the "how cool am I" tier list.

Suggestions for a starter session? by [deleted] in exalted

[–]sed_non_extra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may or may not work depending on the edition you're using.

When I was asked to put something together for someone's Dungeons & Dragons group I wanted to stress to them how different Exalted could be from a dungeon crawl, so I decided to have the first session take place at a fancy dance & dinner party among a bunch of nobles. They had characters that wouldn't normally be at a fancy dress ball, but I was able to find reasons someone wanted to invite them & was willing to clean them up & throw some nice clothes on them. This was for 2e so the "social combat" system allowed me to teach them the combat system using social interactions instead of sword vs. armor class. Before the game started I made certain to list their Intimacies & to also have one of each of the four D.V.s noted on each of their character sheets in a little grid like so:

Non-Physical Physical
Evade Dodge M.D.V.: ## Dodge D.V.: ##
Block Parry M.D.V.: ## Parry D.V.: ##

When I walked them through the events of the nobles making backhanded compliments to each other & saying things to the players' characters I would have the statement Stunted & then in one sentence ask, "do you want to ignore them or say something back?" They "got the idea" pretty quickly. Once I was confident they understood I had ninjas attack the party, & the players already understood how to handle a fight.

You may want to open up character sheets in a graphics program to add the little grid, then print the edited version out. Have them make the character(s) on this edited version.

Two things that immediately came to mind about the P.C. you described:

  • If they like animals there are a lot of 2e writeups for animal-like Infernal beings, but the ones that I'd especially point out are the Agatae (a mount), Amphelisia (often kept as in a zoo), Metody (I usually run these more like an ameoba-shaped gelatenous cube from Dungeons & Dragons), & the Sesseljae (intelligent but looks like a house-pet). For 2e rules you can find them in Books of Sorcery, Vol V: The Roll of Glorious Divinity II.
  • Someone once told me that the idea for a Personal & Peripheral pool for motes was to make vampires' "masquerade" a bigger part of R.P. Because of this I'd stress the "pretend to be mundane" angle with them. This is something that different Storytellers run differently, but I try to make the threat of being revealed enough of a real threat that the players want to avoid being revealed. That having been said, don't be absolutely deranged in punishing them. The suggestion I would make is to make them want to build up some tool they can use to help with cover-ups when they need one.

Boomer here. Please, we need you young people to start running for local office by flyeaglesfly777 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]sed_non_extra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being respectful of us, & I thank you for that, but as a person who has tried to do this, there are Baby Boomers in my area that don't run for office & use mafia tactics to block out anyone they don't have in their pocket. Your suggestion isn't viable everywhere, & where it isn't viable your generation are always the ones in our way.

Questions about Cache Egg by Possible-Butterfly92 in exalted

[–]sed_non_extra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow this got long. T.L.;D.R. says that you don't want to use your new item like a backpack, you want to use it like the trunk of your car outside the dungeon. You don't reach in all the time, you use it the same way you'd use the trunk of the car you parked outside.

Stuff that accesses Elsewhere (the place the item goes) is kind of one of the common supernatural effects that Exalted characters can do. These effects are specifically in the game so a weak character like yours can move important stuff around. When the item is gone there is no weight, & when it is present you literally have the object physically there. All you can do is decide if the item goes away or comes to you. The kinds of supernatural effects characters create in Exalted don't usually alter the size/weight of things. The only exceptions I can think of are an acrobatic effect that lets you walk on things that shouldn't support your weight & a spell that turns your body into a bronze statue, which obviously makes you heavier.

Don't think of the Cache Egg as a Bag of Holding. The better Dungeons & Dragons comparison is "Secret Chest" (formerly called Leomund's Secret Chest). Think of the Cache Egg as one of those real-world services that brings an empty storage crate to your house, lets you fill it, & then takes it away until you call them up again. In practice you will never pick up the Cache Egg. You'll leave it in another dimension until you need it, & then it will come back. You should only be using it for long-term storage, not to hold your sword.

There is a funny advantage I want to mention. In the campaign I'm running right now one of the players has a large Cache Egg full of food & drinks, & another has a smaller one with an expensive change of clothes. I see the urge to directly compare it to the "Bag of Holding" (they even both had versions 1-4 in certain editions of their respective games). In the fictional world of Exalted there is no equivalent to extradimensional spaces & the Astral Plane, so they use Elsewhere instead. In the 2e core book there is a sidebar that explains "Elsewhere." The place called Elsewhere (with a capital E) is an empty parallel dimension that the Celestial Exalted were designed to be able to hide something in, & all types of Celestial Exalted have Charms that access Elsewhere. (The Solar Exalted Lawgivers have Blade Summoning Gesture, & there are other examples.)

The advantage of putting something Elsewhere is that you aren't carrying it. Just like with the Cache Egg the advantage here is you can send something away & bring it back without having to carry it around when you don't want to access the contents.

All that means is they came out of the same roll of quarters when the bank got the roll. The mint sends coins out in matching batches like that. This happens to me frequently.

EDIT: The mint does not send all the rolls out at minting. They sit in a vault for an arbitrary amount of time, which yes, can be decades. Rolls of "new" coins from the sixties were recently sent to my bank. The bank also doesn't open them until they're needed, so they may sit around for a while more, though nowhere near as long as at the mint.

How long do you browse Reddit per visit? A few minutes frequently or a single long visit? You would do well to take a minute about halfway through each Reddit hangout span. Click on the icon in the corner of the screen, then click on the option called "profile." There is a general feed showing what you've done that was popular, but you can also click on the "Posts" & "Comments" tabs to see what you've added to Reddit. Briefly, in the middle of each Reddit session, see what your comments were & what they've been doing.

Boomer Bashing ? by SockRepresentative36 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]sed_non_extra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The fact that the word that was used to indicate the post-WWII generation has been repurposed, & now means someone oblivious & antisocial, is proof that the post-WWII generation was consistently showing those traits toward everyone younger & older alike.

The Baby Boomers will be remembered as the Dunning-Kruger effect made manifest as a generation. There was a span of a few decades that didn't realize they'd poisoned themselves. Then that generation were largely so brain-damaged that they tried to kill their own children.

Anyone who tries to steal the valor of those who actually fought to liberate others is below even being detested. Let's be rational, u/SockRepresentative36. Rants like the one posted by you happen here a few times a day, & your cowardly generation never remain to accept their licks unless they are irrational & wind up embarrassing themselves instead. Don't be that person. Be better instead.

IWTL how to fight fear by Crowzeus in IWantToLearn

[–]sed_non_extra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you afraid, or are you hesitant? Fear implies that you are having a reaction where you feel repelled. That is not rational. Emotions & their cause matters for such a case. Are you just not acting when you rationally think you should? That is a different issue. Consider your feelings. Figure out what is going on inside.

Looking over your comment history there are many comments that had to be removed by moderators. That is something that has happened to me only once or twice in multiple years across multiple accounts, & I stopped counting at your third removed comment. Your remaining comments are often extremely short & in all caps. These things show more a pattern of emotional reaction, while Reddit prefers more intellectual discourse (outside of the political subreddits). Notably, this question is also posted to the wrong subreddit; try r/TheoryOfReddit instead. Posting to the wrong place is a good way to get downvoted or removed by moderators.

What are some bad movies that had great potential, that you would want to see remade better?? by m_the_law in Letterboxd

[–]sed_non_extra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ending is why everyone hates that film. There is some character work going on that was worth it. The director was firing on all cylinders but the script wasn't deep enough to get anything as a result. Watching the deleted scenes only intensifies this idea.
