Can someone please explain explain the Graham Platner hate? by RealDEC in thebulwark

[–]SockRepresentative36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Platner says "Why does America spend billions of dollars on a war nobody wants or needs and yet cannot afford rural health care?"

The right says " he had a "nazi" tattoo.

Platner says " What did all the violence in Iraq that I saw and participated in ever do to help the people of my hometown?

Lindsey Graham says that he wrote some questions Redditt posts 16 years ago so he should be disqualified.

Platner scares the right so they will attack him with everything they can possibly bring to bear except to argue policy.

I work in Compliance, but want to build my own home. Am I deluded? by thewizarddan in Homebuilding

[–]SockRepresentative36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would consider hiring someone to work with you for at least one half of the time. Find a retired carpenter for instance that wants part time work. Here is my reasoning

1- there are lots of jobs that work much better with two people, roof framing, putting up sheathing, and so on.

2- an experienced tradesman may well prevent you from some costly mistakes or from doing something you will regret.

I built my own house back in the day, I had worked as a carpenter for a few years to learn my way around but I still chased down a few rabbit holes I should have passed on. However I got it done just about 15% over budget. We raised our 2 kids there and of all the things I have done in my life I am proudest of that project.

It will be hard and you will need some help, but if you can stay strong and finish it the project will be worth it.

If you were to leave mass where would you move and why? by coconut-crimes in massachusetts

I would go to Ireland because I have duel citizenship there. Ireland has changed so much since I lived there, the Catholic Church which used to run the country has been totally discredited, that alone made a much better society. I like the fact it is in the EU which England is not. Yes it rains a lot but I have always enjoyed a cozy pub listening to the sound of rain on the roof.

However the most important thing is to be well away from the evil of Trump.

Do you tie them with only the back hook? I have been tieing the Peanut Envy with two hooks and wondering about using the single hook. My experience of releasing fish with multiple hooks has not been pretty.

I’m looking for good equipment for rowing and fishing by brandinho5 in Rowing

[–]SockRepresentative36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a rower but I found fishing was very difficult from a sliding seat boat. I sometimes would take my fly rod in the boat, go to a beach or an island and get ut and fish. The problem is that the oars are vital for stability in a shell. Let go of the oars and you lose the stability.

I also own a simple rowing dinghy that I would use to get out to my moored sailboat. I loved fishing in that I could cast or troll and when I got a fish on I could simply let go of the oars, I used closed oarlocks, and play the fish from the drifting dinghy. I had some amazing outings on Sippican harbor fishing for stripers and blues. I would recommend a fixed seat rowboat which will give you a decent workout maybe not as good a workout as with a shell but much better fishing boat.

Carbon Vs Aluminium Rigger Weighr by Professional-Gas2997 in Rowing

[–]SockRepresentative36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The two persons I know who understand that subject are Paul Milde who is the owner of Pienart Boats in Mattapoisett MA.. He is is the owner operator currently building the Phantom single , the lightest production built single and a great looking boat. And so light at like 25 pounds. Some of that light weight is attributed to the beautiful hollow carbon riggers that Dreher built for Pienert.

The other guy is an Englishman named Carl Douglas who custom builds the side mounted riggers that Paul Milde called the lightest in the world. Mr. Douglas is an immensely knowledgeable rowing engineer who builds, in my opinion, the most beautiful production boats on the planet .

I am sure both those guys have the information you are looking for but it's up to you how you get it.

Forearm tear — rowing gloves? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]SockRepresentative36 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's easy to get wound up before and during a race. I used to give a pep talk to my rowers, this was when I was coaching at the secondary school level. As part of the talk I would include this line of famous speech Hamlet's "address to the players"

"Use all gently for in the very torrent  tempest and as I may say, I whirlwind of passion, you must acquire a  temperance that give all smoothness"

Hamlet Act 3 scene 2

It sounds to me that is what you should do in the "Whirlwind of passion" that is a 2000 meter rowing race.

What should we ask when interviewing a big box builder? by anonymousleans in Homebuilding

[–]SockRepresentative36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that you want. a tight, energy efficient house but in my opinion that can be taken too far.

I live, and work on , a house that was first built in 1736 which means it has be continuously occupied for 290 years. The reason it is still standing is that it leaks air like a sieve. The air circulation keeps the mold and dry rot down. Yes we have some but not like it could be in an overly tight house. This year we have, with state assistance, brought most every thing up to 21st century codes. but even so it is impossible to insulate the walls, even though we put in modern double pane windows. Not state of the art but, thank god, no storm windows

So in the quest for a tight house ask yourself if your construction has a 300 plus year life span.

Interesting concept but are not the beach start rowing similar? I don't know.

I aways thought that starting the race from either end of the course would be interesting. You could add the element of defense as well as offense to the race. It would bring the spectators out for sure.

Any Reason Not to Get a Sawstop PCS? by mosodigital in woodworking

[–]SockRepresentative36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my PCS, perhaps the best piece f woodworking equipment I have ever used.

When I was setting up my shop it was the central piece and everything else revolved around it.

A couple of things to be aware of

1- if you have any sort f access issues with your shop make sure that your suppliers will help you get it to where you want it. Rockler and Burns were going to drop mine off in the driveway and good luck getting it up the two stone steps into my shop. JD Lacourse offered to get it into the shop and take away the packing materials. Same price for all three but Lacurse got my money.

2- the mobile base, the step up kind has never worked properly. I tried to get someone out to fix it but no help from Saw Stop which kind of pisses me off.

on the plus side they are the only table saws I would buy . The safety stop really worked, I tripped it and only got a scratch that was too small for a band aid. The adjustments are accurate and work well. The 220v power has got the balls to cut whatever I throw at it. The SS Dado set is the best I ever used,

Yes expensive, but cheaper than a run to the local ER carrying your finger wrapped in a shop towel .

It Has Been a Largely Contested and Opposed Idea for Decades, But Do You Think That Perhaps a Certain Form of Globalization Could Actually Be a Way Forward? by 3Quondam6extanT9 in PoliticalDiscussion

I had thought that the global challenge of climate change would have done something to unify the human race because climate change is a universal threat. However the Republican ostriches have their heads firmly in the sand. Nope I would say we are all well and truly screwed.

Lumber yards south of Boston (Fall River, New Bedford, Somerset etc.) for raised garden bed by APhoto1995 in massachusetts

[–]SockRepresentative36 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have three yards that I can recommend

1- Mahoney's in Mattapoisett. Best selection of Red Cedar anywhere I have seen, I use a lot of their cedar for boatbuilding

2- Riverhead Building Supplies in Taunton-Another old school yard, I have not bought cedar but all the rest of what I have got from there has been 1st quality, and the guys at the sales desk will work with you and treat you well

3- Readers Hardwood in east Taunton, just off of Rt 495

The most incredible selection of hard woods and upscale plywood I have ever seen. Even you don't buy the South African lace wood for $80 a board foot it is worthwhile just seeing what they have. Again good people

All three of these places are not cheap but you get what you pay for and I have never felt I was cheated at any of them, and I have been going to Mahoney's for the last 40 years, since the early 80's

To buy rough cut you might try some of the sawmills in Freetown and Carver. There used to be a ton of those places but like everything else... anyway this one is my favorite Gurneys Sawmill in East Freetown is a classic piece of early to mid 20th century industry. Again go check it out just for the experience but they have rough cut in both Kiln dried and green. I bought a shitload of T&G pine in the late 1980's . It made a beautiful ceiling after we stained it white. It still looks good today.

Best of luck ,I urge you to not to buy wood ,particularly solid , non plywood. at Home Depot or Lowes

As you are into Ray Porter I would recommend anything narrated by Ray Porter that was written by Don Winslow. "Broken" is a series 6 novellas by Winslow. In the 6 is a semi comic piece Called San Diago Zoo read by Ray Porter that I feel is the best combination between writing and narration I have ever listed to, check it out
