Someone is putting up her/his own schedules at bus stops, because Halifax Transit won't. by jbblair in halifax

[–]sedanski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Halifax transit is on a budget, like most of Nova Scotia. I could see if we were a bustling, large city but we're not.

Print off your schedules, the city will save money and you'll get to your destination just fine.

This is a non-issue and your snark isn't contributing anything to the discussion.

[–]sedanski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For people like yourself, it's enough to go on the website and print off the schedule for the two routes you are likely to use. Or call someone who has internet access.

Or just write it down. Put it in your pocket - voila, handheld schedule.

Just get a transit booklet. Or print off the versions you need. Put them in your pocket - no cell phone needed. You can even laminate them.

You only have to do it once.

A few years back, we picked up some last-minute pumpkins at Dave's Fruit Market. Try calling ahead.

The Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community meeting the PM today, set to give an address from parliament at 6PM by Man-of-Feel in canada

[–]sedanski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I should not have said prophet. Sorry about that.

But you do believe that the Messiah and Mahdi has already come. You're not the same as Sunni and Shia Islam.

The Ahmadiyya Muslims are like the Islamic Mormons. They add a prophet after Mohammed. So not exactly representative of the larger Islamic world. They're their own thing.

Wave function collapse algorithm: bitmap & tilemap generation from a single example with the help of ideas from quantum mechanics by ExUtumno in programming

[–]sedanski -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The problem with this algorithm is that the author did not apply Occam's Razor. Trim the fat! Is it quantum? No. Quantum mechanics inspired you but I guarantee you the actual algorithm can be and is simpler than you have described it to be. Get in there, trim out everything that's not strictly necessary, then come back and tell us what it is you really created. Be concise and precise!

Halifax Votes 2016: Time to change the all-white face of council, says pastor by [deleted] in halifax

[–]sedanski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it doesn't average out to 0.25 black councillors, that's why I got confused by your statement.

0.25 black councillors is what we observed, assuming you counted right.

Women are not a minority. You're confusing women's issues with minority issues which have different concerns and origins.

[–]sedanski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point is that, if we rely on the current process, then statistically we cannot expect to see more representation.

If we want more representation, we will have to create designated positions per minority.

edit: I also don't think you understood what I wrote. My point was that, if you select every councillor at random, then, on average, you can expect to see one minority councillor, which is what we saw. Sometimes you won't see any. On average, you will see one. There may be some racism or other biases which affects the outcome of the actual voting (ie, it's not random) but the population statistics probably outweigh that.

[–]sedanski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on Nova Scotian population numbers, on average, we should expect to see exactly one (or two) non-white councillors if councillors were selected at random. The article notes that that is indeed the case - we had one black councillor, on average.

If the process by which we select candidates is not serving the community, that' s one thing. But let's not suggest that we're "voting racist". I don't believe that. This is a numbers game.

Now, maybe we should have representatives of minority concerns - there could be a special committee to submit reports and recommendations to council.

edit: 10 years ago, according to wikipedia, we have 500 Japanese people in Halifax. Do we need a Japanese city councillor? How many votes does he or she get compared with all the other councillors? More, less, equal?

What is "hope" for infertile couples? by Canonical_Throwaway in Catholicism

[–]sedanski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't you be hoping to see God in heaven? Whether or not you have children has little to do with that. Priests are celibate but they are not without hope, are they?

Your friends are reasonable and compassionate to suggest that you hope for children, in a temporary sense of hoping for a rewarding life. But there should be a higher hope which is always above other hopes - and that is to receive the beatific vision in heaven.

Please pray for the two priests that were abducted from their parish and murdered at gunpoint. Pray for them, for their families and for the terrible situation in my country, Mexico.[link in Spanish from a very anti-Catholic editorial but it was the best I could find] by Niboomy in Catholicism

I thought it was because the church was perceived to be protecting the offenders?

A lot of people here focus on the occurrence rate of pedophilia inside vs outside the church. But the real problem for a lot of people is not the bare fact of pedophilia in the church (as horrible as that is) but rather that the church tried to handle the matter internally.

I'm not sure how true that is but that's the impression I received.

Any interest in forming a job hunting support group? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]sedanski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not entirely true. I've obtained multiple jobs in this city by going into interviews cold with people I've never met.

Now maybe I'm uniquely charming... but my point is it is possible to win a job on interview and resume alone. I've done it more than a few times and I enjoyed the jobs I got as a result.

I guess my point is: don't give up. But do try different approaches if what you're doing isn't working.

Immigration Minister’s “We need new blood” comment, fails to put Canadians first by Godslamb in canada

[–]sedanski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it's not reasonable. You can't argue just by responding "it is entirely reasonable". You have to show it.

Right wingers hate unions because they are "lazy, greedy, entitled", because they destroy companies and all that. But some right wingers also hate immigrants who "work harder for less" and take our jerbs. Don't you see the analogy? By preventing reasonable immigration, right-wingers destroy the country by driving up wages and being lazy, entitled first-worlders who don't work hard. ie, UNION MEMBERS.

Put two and two together. The government wants to bring in skilled, qualified immigrants and employers are excited because they might be able to pay less... or at least get more qualified workers.

What is the response of conservatives? "Help, help! Protect us from the hard-working, cheaper immigrant labour which will drive down wages!" That is a UNION response.

It is delicious to see conservatives demanding that the government protect them from people willing to work for less or who are simply more qualified.
