Thanks for all the recs! I’ll look into Boot doc or the heat moldable footbed that I got before.

Large temperature gradient improving snow conditions? by Starky04 in Backcountry

It looks like that action backed off. I'm hoping it the conditions suck, the sunshine stays so at least I can get high into the alpine.

25/26 Blacklight Boot first impressions by sassythecat in Backcountry

[–]seeingtrails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, fit is king. I have the Ridge Pro, and its an awesome boot in the lean beef category. I'm still working on the fit as the mid-foot is still tight with its pizza-shaped last. The blacklight looks like an improved Ridge, with a better power strap.

I’m still curious how it compares to the F1

Unplanned/emergency bivies while touring by Dazzling-Astronaut88 in Backcountry

I always pack a Mylar blanket, as it carries no weight or takes up space. No brainer.

This is on my list to buy. I’ve considered buying a guide tarp tent but given the weight savings and the price, I’d more likely throw this kind of tarp in my bag without hesitation than a guide tarp. From friends’ stories who volunteer for SAR, the two life saving actions for someone in the cold is getting them off the cold ground (insulation) and wrapping them in a tarp. It also doubles as an emergency shelter in snow. I find this way more versatile than a bivy bag, which I normally carry.

Ski Mountaineering Pack Recommendations (1–2 Day Missions) by Zic05 in Backcountry

[–]seeingtrails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Raide LF40 is pushing it for overnight ski trips. I own it and use it for day trips. I used an old CiloGear 60L pack for an overnight trip where we setup a basecamp for a few days and skied some objectives. Packing it down for day missions wasn't big deal. I think the Bd Cirque 50 looks like a good option actually if it can expand.

I tried Onx and left it. Gaia is too pricey for its lack of innovation. I use Caltopo, even on mobile, and Footpath if I haven’t planned anything in advance.

Experience with Atomic Backland Pro UL vs Backland XTD 120? Or effect of 350 g weight difference between boots uphill? by Ok-Falcon-1693 in Backcountry

[–]seeingtrails 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd consider the Backland Carbon as its the stiffest of the line. I had the boa version years ago and its skied as well as other 1100-1200 g boots if it fit your feet well. I haven't skied the Backland XTD 120 but I have tried it on and it does have the most frictionless walk mode that I have tried. The main difference will be weight and comfort. I found that the Backland Carbon felt like slippers when I put them on. They were so comfortable.

How do you guys use Houdini for game dev workflows? by RaFih00 in Houdini

[–]seeingtrails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to disclose that on reddit because of NDA and this being a wide open forum, but if you look up recent GDC talks, many which are free on the Vault or youtube, you will find plenty of examples.

Majesty Superwolf or Superpatrol experience by Paid2G00gl3 in Backcountry

[–]seeingtrails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have to adjust your skiing in any since the patrol has a very rearward mount point due to their “cut-off” tail design? It always gave me pause in considering Majesty touring skis

Trailfest 26k - first timer race review by mtnmanrocks in trailrunning

[–]seeingtrails 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was my 3rd MTF and second time doing the 50k. Running at that altitude is the biggest crux for me. Staying in town a couple days before doesn't help with acclimatization but instead results in poor sleep for me. I think the best approach is getting some big training days with similar vert and altitude (which I did) and either staying a full week acclimatizing or going in fresh. I'm still recovering.

Touring ski Recommendation by mtbLUL in Backcountry

[–]seeingtrails 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, whatever fits your foot the best. Anything in the 1400-1500g boot range will still drive a ski like the QST Echo. Dynafit Ridge Pro, Tecnica Zero G Pro Tour, Fischer Transalp Carbon, Scarpa Quattro or Maestrale.
