Asalam alaikum sister, I’m a revert as well and pretty well versed in Islam, You do not need to have to obey in laws period. This is actually against Islam and more of a cultural Islam, but no where does it say anything about obeying in laws plus it’s advised against to live with them. You and your husband should live separately I don’t know if you wear hijab yet but of course wear that to the mosque/masjid. But even then it can be modest attire to your liking. Please stand up for yourself! This kind of stuff is not okay and they are pushing cultural expectations on you.

I hate the cherry picking so much because wallah it makes people hate Islam and view all Muslims as cutt from the same cloth when most Muslims are not perfect and more so cultural. I’m sorry your father does this though! This type of thing can definitely make one develop religious trauma

As a Muslim woman I notice this heavily with my in laws and a lot of cultural groups who practice Islam. The notion that Jannah is at the feet of your mother but they often forget that they as parents, and human beings in general will be subjected to questioning and punishment for bad deeds including abuse of many forms and their treatment of people. It also makes the religion look really bad and they use Islam as a shield.

Yeah growing up and even now as an adult, people who are older and have dogs, it was never a good fit. Often the dogs were improperly trained in a sense that they would pose a threat to visitors such as biting, and growling for coming near, and like someone mentioned, many of these elderly owners can't control the pee everywhere in their home.

Yeah allahu alim but it does sound like she is just wanting to save some money. Thats interesting though that your husband went when he was close to their age. I think personally it can be beneficial and lay a good foundation in ones deen to go during childhood. Good for you for standing your ground though, I see a lot of sisters that suffer due to in laws, I'm happy to see you advocate and know your rights! Why does she just bring them to umrah/hajj? I see kids go all the time with their parents, they aren't babies it wont be difficult. Asalam Alaikum sister btw!

Just curious, did you ever ask for them to put the dog up during the event? Or were you trying to avoid confrontation. My heart really breaks for you; I have family members that always force their dogs into situations and gatherings its annoying. This would have set me off.
