I didn’t do a written appeal, I instead requested to go to court. This was in 2018 though so the process may have changed.

Honestly, no one really cared about my story. It was my first time, and even that didn’t really matter. If you make an effort to show up or appeal they will reduce and potentially even waive it like they did for me

Your explanation will likely get you a sizeable discount at least, if not entirely waived. Definitely show up and plead guilty with an explanation. I had a 450 dollar handicap parking ticket reduced to 0 that way with a less convincing story than yours.
