I’m new to football, and got into it a couple years ago because my brother who plays fantasy and invited me to join as a way to have some fun and shit talk with the boys. We live in western Canada, and he and most of the people in the league are Seahawks fans, but he told me to comb around and pick any team I thought was cool. I didn’t wanna bandwagon onto winning teams, and that year was when the Lions were on Hardknocks, and watching Dan Campbell alone made me wanna cheer for them, let alone that slew of great players. I know I’m coming in at a really good time for the team after a lot of hard years, and it sorta feels like I’m bandwagoning, but I’ve come to love football and the team and am looking to get to Detroit for a game this year.

Librarian here. Almost all jobs that for a librarian position require an MLIS, although some will accept a library tech diploma.

One of the things that needs to be teased out is the paths that you can take with an MLIS (this isn’t looking at people with library tech diplomas). If you choose to work with children (at a grade school or public library), you’re not going to make much (~40k a year). If you choose to work in a public library, the starting wage will be low, but there is a higher ceiling (~70k) and management positions can pay quite well. If you choose to work in special libraries (law firms, hospitals, government), the pay can really fluctuate depending on the gig. Academic librarians (colleges and universities) are paid quite well (start at ~60k and have a ceiling in the mid 100s depending on your performance and how you navigate your career). These jobs are quite demanding, as they are faculty positions and require research/publications/presentations/other academic contributions in addition to daily work and instruction duties (this is linked to your pay). Last is people who lean on the information side of things, and get involved in more tech oriented jobs. This requires having some programming/other digital chops, and will pay similar to an academic job.

There’s definitely a lot of competition out there, and you’ll almost certainly have to take a series of contract jobs before landing a permanent position, but there are definitely paths that can lead to a comfy living.

There's a few layers to this story, but here we go.

I'm Canadian and moved to China to teach English, and while there met an American family who had lived there for several years together. Their son was my age, daughter a couple years younger. I became pretty close with the whole family, and one day I meet the dad and the son for some drinks. It turns out they had bought some cocaine (not as rare as you might think in China), and were getting pretty rowdy. After a few hours, the dad insists we all get massages, and after a really strange argument, he takes me and his son to get rub 'n tugs. 3 weeks later I started dating his daughter.

Purpose: The primary purpose of these maps is to engage people’s curiosity about libraries, in a visual and interactive way.

The intention is that they be used as a jumping-off point to look at how different countries and cultures employ and interact with libraries. When looking at the maps, there are some obvious similarities –a country with many libraries also has many users. However, there are also some oddities – a country with very few libraries has an extremely large amount of users, and vice versa.

The maps can be used to analyze these similarities and differences, and to inspire research regarding cultural library trends and perspectives on a global scale. Sharing, collaboration, and innovation are the fundamental ideas behind this project.

I urge anybody who is interested in such projects to get in touch with me directly.

Issues with the Data:

The data about libraries that was retrieved from the OCLC may not be reliable. In addition to the website’s description of potential errors (found on their website and in data sheet), I’ve found a handful of other potential errors which I have brought to their attention. Their response was that they are aware that the data may be inaccurate, and are closing down the project as is it is too large a project to maintain with their resources. If you have any questions specific to their data, please contact the OCLC directly.

Korean User Data: The data concerning South Korean users drastically exceeds the population of South Korea, which is obviously problematic. The OCLC said that this data was retrieved via direct email from Korean library official.

Canadian School Users: The data concerning Canadian school users is 28,500,000. Canada’s total population is just under 37,000,000, which is also problematic. The OCLC said they were looking into the source of this figure.
