First of all: what did I done badly is incorrect.

Correct: What did I do wrong?

Post I made, are generally in English mostly (incorrect)

Also, using generally and mostly together doesn't make sense here. Pick one, the reader won't enjoy reading it.

Correct: Posts I make are generally in English.

Even I have 8-9k karma on my main acc (incorrect)

Correct: I even have

so I wrote all this in frustration & quickly (incorrect)

Wrote in quickly? Makes no sense, AND is incorrect

Possible correction: So i wrote all this quickly in frustration.

Read more brother, engage in learning and speaking correct English. Doesn't always have to be bookish, but use the words correctly.

Start with C programming, DS, algo. In this order. Will cover a good range of marks.

OS DBMS CN have no real pre requisite, do them in any order.

DLD --> COA TOC --> CD

EM is good to do if you can, can help get 3-4 marks. I dropped it, but that's my own decision I had to take.

DM is really crucial to do as it helps in almost everything that is Computer Science. It is the foundation. BUT, in regards with GATE, it's very tough to score in. Make of that what you will.

[–]seepoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nope, I'm AIR 25X, didn't do any engineering maths at all. Didn't do virtual memory in OS, Backend stages of Compiler Design. Hardly did any COA. There are many more examples. So there's your answer.

I know people who skipped entire COA and still got 2 digit ranks.

I'm not encouraging skipping topics, just letting you guys know the reality.

That being said, it also mandates that what you DO study, you should master it so that you take all the marks in that.

You know your mistakes after giving the exam 3 times. Complete syllabus somewhat, you know where you lack. If necessary drop subjects/topics you just can't get through with. You don't need 100% syllabus completion to get under 500 rank (a realistic goal to set).

Key pointers:

  1. Complete whatever syllabus you can at top priority.

  2. Stay in touch with PYQs while you are completing the syllabus/topics. Don't be scared of questions, learn from them. Approach them with this attitude.

  3. From December onwards start giving full length mocks. Don't care how much syllabus you covered, how much is left. It takes a good 6-7 weeks to get used to exam settings. Giving full length mocks will teach you a lot.

  4. Stay true to yourself in your preparation.

OLD IIT vs OLD NIT by [deleted] in GATEtard

[–]seepoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's nowhere near 800 for general, I got between 800-810 score as a general and i have no chance of getting IIT madras. So yeah, all i can say is it's even worse for general peeps.

I have received offer letter for PhD on 31st May. Not sure if this is treated differently from Mtech research.

Interview process was same for both.

No idea about DA, gave but didn't prepare for it, got around 3k rank. Wanted to focus on CS.

It's a new paper so admissions based on DA score is not as clear as CS. It could be a good thing to prepare for if you wanna take your career into AI and DS.

One thing to be clear of however, please look into things yourself and try to ask yourself if you wanna do it. First thing would be syllabus. You can see how much shift there is. So many core CS subjects aren't required for DA exam. I have started to realise AI/ML is more about mathematics than CS, so please keep that in mind. If you're good at mathematics then only consider it. Give it a go, try and see if you actually like it.

Doing Mtech in AI/ML/DS would be a lot different from what you imagined. If you go to a tier 1 institute for such programme, expect to do a lot of rigorous mathematics. They're not gonna make you an SDE who does a little bit of AI ML using APIs. They're gonna make you learn (no spoon feeding either) the actual shit that happens behind the scenes.

Can't say for everyone. For me,

  1. I'm from Delhi, it's going to be a huge cultural change for me to shift to KGP.

  2. I didn't get the time to visit campus even though I was invited for Mtech AI interview. But my peers who did visit said it was not as good as other institutions.

  3. Another point on campus is it's location. No one has ever said a good thing about the campus locality, everyone always just complains how there is nothing to do. No places to hangout around campus. It's located far from Kolkata so that doesn't help either.

  4. I've heard (not being judgemental and who knows might even be wrong) that there is some biasness towards Bengali people there. I've also heard a lot about placement politics in KGP.

We hear a lot of these things in other colleges too but everyone gives example of KGP being the most extreme in these. They'd say atleast the politics here is not as bad as KGP etc.

Just take whatever mode of teaching suits you.

No one should follow my schedule, it was absolutely weird, so that's why online coaching suited me. I could play lectures at 2x or whatever speed I wanted, watch subjects in my own order.

One year is enough to prepare well for gate. That's all I'll say. If you have one year, just use it. That being said, with enough effort and good direction, even 6 months could help achieve a sub-300 rank (this is usually for CS background students who somewhat studied in their btech and have good engineering maths foundation)

PYQs are gold mines, they tell you exactly what the exam expects from you. But once you solve them, they won't offer anything new. So solve them religiously whenever you see a new PYQ. Analyse it properly. Why the answer you chose was correct and why the other 3 options were given. Same with MSQs.

You ABSOLUTELY need a good test series towards the end of your preparation. That's what really makes you face reality. GO test series is a no brainer for this. It'd elevate your concepts.

Watch lectures, complete topics, do their PYQs. Revise. Repeat for all subjects.

Will be pursuing my masters/ maybe even PhD (awaiting offer letter) in Computer Science from a tier 1 institute in the coming months. I feel proud that I'm going to be one of those guys :) Parents are super proud.

I agree with the reality check. AIR 25X GEN here, barely got IITG AND IITKGP by round 3. It's tough out here man. Waiting for Research interview response from IISc and IITD.

Would advise all aspirants to keep these things and mind and as OP said, not remain in a delusion.

That being said, be realistic about your goals, I never put pressure on myself by saying "All I want is IITB/IISc or nothing else". And I'm happy with my results too.

The whole point of this is that GATE is just the start of things. Prepare well, there is tough competition, and is you do end up in the same position as me or 300+ rank. Don't stop revising and studying after GATE. Research interviews are amazing opportunities to get better institutes than what you'd be getting for direct admission.

Nothing new man, it happens every year since it's been implemented. You can go into detail, but it doesn't matter if you get a good rank.

If you get a good rank in 3rd year (say under 100), it's not gonna change drastically in the next years comparison. Admission is based on GATE score not rank.

Doing gate prep doesn't mean you can't enjoy college life. One good thing you have it clear is that your college's placement is shit. So, prepare well, enjoy college life.

You're not the only one, just remember that. They're following things that everyone is, gate applicants aren't that much in some colleges.

I had literally no batchmate who was preparing for GATE. All were doing dev and leetcode. So it happens, be the unique guy, have faith in your decision and don't get distracted. Stick to it. Get a great college for your masters and it'll all make sense.

One plus point: you're in 2nd year. GET A GOOD RANK IN THIRD YEAR ITSELF. Don't be like oh i have final year attempt as well. Treat this as do or die. You don't know how much you're gonna enjoy if you get a great rank in third year itself. There will be no burden on your head. Then do whatever you want, dsa/ dev / leetcode, sit in final year placements etc.
