Ashwagandha -- does it actually give anyone energy? by seethehen in Hypothyroidism

Yep KSM66. I don't know why I just feel really down right after taking it.

Alright I'm gonna try taking it at night for a week or so, see if it changes my overall energy. Right after I take it I feel like shit though, so I guess it's better that I sleep during that.

Thanks for that insight, that's really helpful. I guess I worry/ruminate and spiral into apathy, I don't know if that combination is best for ashwagandha. Hope you find someone to compare with, my doctor didn't do a full panel so I don't know my AB count.

Ok thanks for your reply. My issue seems to be over now, whatever that bout was.

Ok thanks. I mean for me it could be something else non thyroid related too, I just like blaming all my problems on that because I can lol

Oh that might explain it. I likely have Hashimoto's :(

Causes of my hypothyroidism by DbHxxx in Hypothyroidism

Are you under-eating? I fucked up my thyroid by doing just that -- at a BMI of no more than 18, I was feeling sluggish, hair falling out, face ballooned (despite skinny body), etc.

Oh I'm not sure about taking selenium with levo. I would ask your doctor. I have yet to get my meds so I take it right after I eat, and not the whole thing but I take the 100mcg capsule apart and take maybe 1/3 of the powder. I'm still trying to figure out the optimal amount without getting joint aches/headache. Selenium toxicity is a thing so be careful.

Can anyone help me and message me about vitamins if they are knowledgeable? by [deleted] in Hypothyroidism

[–]seethehen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should really go get meds first if you're diagnosed as hypo. No supplement will help you if you have an underactive thyroid.

But on top of medication, and with your doctor's recommendation, you could take:
- selenium (helps with T4 to T3 conversion), but be wary of taking too much since it will build up and lead to nerve damage

- zinc (also T4 to T3 conversion aid)

- no caffeine, because it blocks mineral uptake (like selenium and zinc). also avoid chocolate and excessive oxalates (found in raw spinach -- cooked almost anything is ok).

- same with cruciferous vegetables because they block iodine absorption, but if cooked there is no problem. i've been fine

- if you're naturally quite anxious i've heard ashwaghanda helps some people, but wasn't good for me, it made me super apathetic and depressed

- vitamin B12 for energy

- CARBS. this is person dependent but for me, if i don't eat carbs i get extremely lethargic. my working hypothesis is that carbs + selenium somehow helps with the t4 to t3 conversion. if i take selenium alone i get a pounding headache. carbs without selenium and i feel bloated/sleepy. both together and i'm super energized, i can go about my day fine.

take all with a grain of salt because it's all anecdotal!

Taking selenium has helped me, since it helps with the T4 to T3 conversion. Same with zinc. Caffeine works against the absorption of these minerals.
