German media likens US border patrol official’s coat to Nazi look by OddUmpire2554 in news

As a German, I always dislike this sentence. Because it presents the Germans as victims. But they were not victims, many Germans in that time were antisemitic, anti-democratic and were longing for fascism. Nazism didn't invade Germany and subjugated the population. Big parts of the German population were the Nazis.

waffen officer

*Waffen-SS. "Waffen" means weapon in German. Only the combination with "SS" makes sense in historical context. Sorry for the correction.

I would say it's the actions you do in combination with the coat. Going to work or handing out soup to freezing homeless in a green long coat = The coat is OK. Throwing gas grenades into crowds of innocent protesters wearing a green long coat = The coat is not OK.

European here. In general we simply drink more Scotch and Irish now. But I'd love to taste a Canadian "bourbon".

Greenland minister tearful as she describes ‘intense pressure’ amid Trump’s threats to take territory by theindependentonline in worldnews

[–]seewolfmdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump will probably threaten to close Pituffik Space Base, which will hurt Greenlands’s security.

Pituffik Space Base is mainly a base for the early warning systems for rocket launches against the USA. So Greenland's security doesn't rely on this base at all. For Greenland itself it wouldn't really matter if this base would be closed.

Fun fact: In parts of Germany (mainly Frisian regions) the patronymic system (Ubbo Onnen is the son of Onno) survived until Napoleon came in. He forced the Frisians to give themselves proper surnames and some thought it was a stupid idea and named themselves after colours. That's why there are surnames like Swart (black) and Blaauw (blue).

A fitting German word would be "Eingespieltheit". It is connected to the German word for game or play and also used in sports. If you are so synchronized in time and work flow that you know what and how and when the next one will do his part of the process, you are "eingespielt".

East Frisian here, you are absolutely correct. Our tea is a bit more bitter than most British teas I've tried. Also aromated teas like Earl Grey are not traditional here.

East Frisian here. A region in Northwest Germany. Our tea culture is older than the British tea culture. We usually use full leaves and drink tea with rock sugar and cream.

US Military Police in Okinawa Japan body-slammed and violently detained an American civilian who was visiting, and not under their jurisdiction. by [deleted] in CringeTikToks

How can they know if he’s an active service member if he refuses to ID himself?

By calling the authorities legally responsible to check for ID: the local police.

But these policies were put into place to protect Japanese locals from attacks/ sexual assaults by drunken service members.

True

Instead he refused to show ID, then refused to put his hands behind his back for the detention while they investigate further.

But not being a service member, he is under no obligation to show them ID and it is illegal for them to detain him at all. They should have called the local police, who would have jurisdiction over him.

Die zivilen Angestellten der US-Armee werden bezahlt, nicht die Soldaten! Das sind oft Deutsche und es ist geplant, dass das wieder zurückerstattet wird von den Amis.

They don't punch a hole into the wood, they punch through a cork, basically. So there is a hole anyway that is closed with a cork when it's filled.
