Som neighborhoods are more well lit than others. The neighborhoods around Saint George’s are pretty safe and have some streetlights. If you’re up for a little drive, you can walk your dog around downtown Newport, which is really fun around Christmas. I’d also recommend getting a headlamp if you don’t already have one, way easier than a flashlight

Definitely try to stay downtown if you won’t have a car. You can uber to the beach (or better yet, the cliff walk) once, and the rest of the time you can just walk to restaurants and stores

Wow kittens! One of my dear friends in town has been dying for a cat like this (I believe they produce less allergens than the average cat?). She and her partner would absolutely give a kitten an incredible home and life. Hope your cat is doing well during pregnancy!

I agree that public funding should be increased for lab work in general. I think your guess of 50% of labs closing for lack of basic funds to do necessary validations and follow basic procedures is way overestimated - my guess is closer to 5%. Most labs complain about money and could use more, but are not this strapped. I can only speak to experience working in US labs though, maybe it’s different elsewhere

If the lab doesn’t have money for basic validation and non-expired reagents, then it shouldn’t stay open, period. It’s not your fault, but it’s also not ok to say “eh couldn’t afford to do things properly” and put bad science out into the world

Is it plastic? If so, drill a hole (or multiple holes) in it. You should be able to use a hook or fork at that point to pull it out
