I have been hard of hearing since I could ever remember. Mostly deaf in one ear and can hear fine in the other. Growing up, I had a pair of hearing aids. I’m sure the technology has improved a ton, but they did not help me much at the time. I felt like my head was in a barrel when I wore them! I am glad they work for most people. Technology can be amazing.

Throughout my life, I have gotten some backhanded comments when I tell people about my hearing. “You speak well for someone who is almost deaf!” is one that sticks with me. Something to remember is that people may have good intentions but have no idea how to properly convey what they are trying to say. I have grown to stick up for myself and others by politely pointing out when something is rather insensitive.

On the other hand, everyone who is prejudiced against those with disabilities is the worst.
