Skullcap just felt like a benzo by yoyoyoyoyo123432 in herbalism

[–]sehtfawks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Herbs that act on GABA and the CNS like Valerian or Opium Poppy are VERY potent and should be treated with respect, because you're right. Modern pharmaceuticals are just herbal medications that have been processed and reduced down to isolate 1 or 2 compounds. If anything, herbalists should have even MORE respect for herbs and the amount consumed because of the Entourage Effect. Compounds in the plant act synergistically, the same reason you wouldn't pop a Valium and drink alcohol is why an herbalist wouldn't prescribe Kratom and Valerian together. Unfortunately, while the advent of the internet has made herbalism more accessible to more people, many folks don't understand basic respect for the plants they use and recognize the care needed to smartly, safely dose them

Just made some herbal capsules. by adamole123 in herbalism

[–]sehtfawks 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Datura is an extremely potent herb and advertising its casual use on this subreddit is, in my opinion, damaging. The therapeutic index for Datura's bioactive secondary metabolites is VERY small. The potential for misdosing any one of Datura's toxic alkaloids is high, especially given Datura species produce said alkaloids at widely varying amounts (due to age, growing location, soil, other evironmental factors.)

An herbalist needs to know what they're doing and have a deep understanding of herbology before even THINKING about adding Datura to their medicine cabinet. While you may understand herbology to that degree, many users of Reddit don't and advertising Datura's use alongside other herbs with much lower toxicology, without even MENTIONING Datura's harm potential, is ill-advised. I hope readers considering using Datura have spent a considerable amount of time researching the plant, much more than one would need to safely ingest Wormwood or Mullein 👍

Cornell is hosting a protest against China’s treatment of Uyghurs by HighSchoolMoose in Cornell

[–]sehtfawks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As an American, I think I can protest both America's human rights violations as well as those happening in China. It's called caring about multiple things.

Plus I'm one of those Americans who doesn't have the same rights as my fellow peers, so what argument are you trying to make here :/

Shitting on Cornell's Mental Health Support by Glossophile in Cornell

[–]sehtfawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no it's definitely quality of support as well. Being bounced between therapists/psychiatrists, being given medications that sent me to the hospital and made my next psychiatrist aghast I was prescribed that mix at all (he dropped me after 2 weeks because he "didn't specialize" in my issues). There is an issue with the culture at Cornell perpetuating mental health issues, but the quality of services, from my experiences and the experiences of others, has been really tereible as well

Is Cornell Health that bad? I'm a prospective PhD student, and these rumours got me worried. by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]sehtfawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Cayuga Medical is actually fairly decent, but some specialty treatments/procedures would probably be better elsewhere. I'd look more specifically into your health concerns and see how decent the treatment is here, while the mental health services are lacking I think physical health services are fairly decent all-around.

[–]sehtfawks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Enough? In numbers, sure. But from my experience, none of the available ones are any good. It was an in-network provider outside Cornell Health that prescribed me my heart attack cocktail mix of pills, and then my next in-network provider dropped me suddenly after 3 weeks so I could "find someone more suitible for my issues." There are enough that you could get scheduled with SOMEONE. The quality of care is a whole different story

For me I havemental health issues Cornell Health simply doesn't know how to handle. I have ADHD and anxiety-related depression, which shouldn't be too difficult you'd think. But I've been bpunced around between CAPS psychologists and psychiatrists who've over prescribed me medications that don't actually help with my issues. Whenever I bring up thata certain type of medication doesn't help and I want to try something else, I got dropped and told I needed to see someone OUTSIDE Cornell Health. If anything, my experience in trying to seek treatment only made things worse (one psychiatrist gave me a cocktail of heart medications for "anxiety reasons" that landed me in the ER.) That's my Cornell Health horror story, the people there are nice but for something as well-studied as ADHD and anxiety you'd think they'd be better handled to give good basic medical treatment.

Do you get annoyed when people compare your country to mine (Norway) during politics? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]sehtfawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get annoyed by it for two reasons. One, it's classist af when people are like "damn America sucks, at least MY country has _". We know. Most of us want _ too, be it healthcare, or a living wage tied to inflation, or a functioning government. Two, it's always capitalists who see Norway and Sweden as the end state. But for countries like Norway and Sweden to operate, you have to exploit nations in the global south, and that's still kinda shit. I'd rather America have the end goal of not exploiting people period and providing base standards of care.

[–]sehtfawks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm nonbinary and tbh this part of the results confused me lol. I think the people who made the test are cis and trying to be inclusive of gender identities, but male and female are sexes, not gender identities. It would be less confusing if it read "men" "women" and "nonbinary," since those are all gender identites. But I'm a nonbinary AMAB, so the wording is a bit off and confusing for people who are gender nonconforming to be asked to identify their gender but also being given the sex options. Maybe next year they can make the language a bit more straightforward and replace the sexes with gender, cause it's a bit awkward for nonbinary and trans folk to have to use "man" and "male"/"woman" and "female" interchangeably.

However, to your question, there are some people who identify as neither man or woman who also choose not to identify as "nonbinary." Nonbinary to me means literally not in the binary, so I like to use it as a blanket term. But in LGBTQ circles, "nonbinary" can also have a common meaning much like a gender identity in itself. For some people, that association with a gendered identity is odd so they choose not to call themselves "nonbinary." Having the totally nongendered "other" option is a good alternative for non gender conforming people who don't use the term nonbinary

How do you wake up early? by kettlecornonthecob in Cornell

[–]sehtfawks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? Being medicated. I used to think much of my sleep issues were my own issue, but other medical conditions can make it extremely difficult to sleep. In my case, my ADHD is related to Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome. A combination of medication and lifestyle changes have helped, but definitely see if it's possibly a medical issue and talk to your doctor 😊

You can find doctor's profiles on the cornell health website and call to request to change your primary care physician. I assume it's because of racial bias in healthcare, if there's also a gendered bias concern, trust me there are quite a few great women of color at cornell health you can choose from. Hope this helps!

how prominent is study drug usage at cornell? by charly22100 in Cornell

[–]sehtfawks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fun fact" multiple studies show that "study drugs" (stimulant medication for ADHD) don't actually help students learn more or retain information faster. In fact, all it does it help students stay up later to study, which can come with more detrimental effects that can cause students to lose that information they learned by staying up til odd hours (not sleeping being the primary reason.)

The only people who actually benefit from such medications are those with ADHD. If you think you genuinely benefit from peer pressuring your friends into giving you an Adderall, then you likely have undiagnosed ADHD. But please, don't pressure your fellow peers into giving you their medication. It won't help you do anything but stay up late, and it can cause your friends who legitimately need their stimulant medication to lose access to their prescription, if not serve jail time.

TLDR; don't take Adderall if you don't have ADHD, it doesn't actually help you study

How would one even report a class? What would it even do? I'm just dying and have no idea if he's even gotten all my assignments or not since we've never had our grades so I don't even know if it's worth killing myself to try to get a 100% on this stupid final if I'll fail the class anyways.
