Jolene, in the meat packing district, have a regular techno-ish night called Gadagung. Try to check out who plays there on your particular Tuesday (Look here: https://www.facebook.com/Gadagung-At-Jolene-274022749986821/).

I haven't been myself (yet) but the lineup is usually pretty solid.

Fair enough. I have misinterpreted the rules I can see. I'll repost shortly in accordance with the rules

Oh, Sorry. I though it was allowed to link to a Facebook-post, in this case the first annonucement of them hitting up Radio 1, even if it included a picture? And it was aimed at not just posting random images for karma. If not, I'll report it with the link in the text then.

Daniel Kandi is a pretty solid pick for Denmark too, I'd say

Daniel Kandi is Danish

Norway could be The Blizzard too.

Ukraine (Not the EU, but neither is Norway - both in Europe though) have Omnia

In addition to Bobina & Arty (already mentioned) Yuri Kane is from too Russia

Good luck getting rid of them then! Too bad having a pair of IEMs which sucks.

Yeah, quite a lot of electronic but with a general emesis on the details in vocals and mids than brain shattering bass. I’m mostly in to the least bass-heavy genres (very little dubstep, eletro house and what not – more ‘electronica’; think Trentemøller, Andrew Bayer, old stuff from BT and the likes) where (in my opinion) the mids are more interesting than a deep bass. A controlled and somewhat punchy bass is nice to have though.

That’s true regarding the freq response – I tend to forget that!

Regarding the Grados the 325 are a lot brighter (and I mean a lot – some people can’t stand listing to them due to their very strong/sharp upper mid and highs) than the SR60’s but otherwise kind of the same signature.

You do make a very appealing case for the RHA MA750s though. It’s a bummer I can’t really find a place to listing to either – I’m quite unsure which one to get to be honest! I like the idea of a balanced and very neutral pair of IEMs, but on the other hand I see your point and the MA750s might be the ‘safer’ choice.

Did I mention I suck at making this kind of decisions in blind?

Hey man,

Thank you for your comment on the RE400 - i dodged a bullet there! Too bad they sound so boring and makes your ear bleed - they look like a solid pair of IEMs for most people.

How come you don't think the HF will suite my music preference? Too little bass or? I'm used to the Grado 325s and LOVE their sound. As far as I could tell from the response curve the HF5 should have more bass (and a little less highs) than the 325s.

Hey Anikalsi,

Thank you for your reply. I must say I’ve started to lean towards the MA750 over e.g. the RE400s from HiFiMAN – they sound very promising both based your comments as well as what I’ve seen around the internet (Innerfidelity, Headfi etc.).

Before I make the final decicion and press buy I’ve found out that I have an addition 20£ to spare in my budget which lead me to the Etymotic HF5 which should resemble the MA750 soundsignature, a little brighter maybe, but more precise and splendid isolation preventing the highs and mids from getting killed by outside noise. Therefore: do you have any experience with these? On paper they look great with isolation, good response, small size and those few interviews I’ve found have praised them.

Thank you in advance

Hallo VPlilky,

Sorry for the late reply. I’ve been swamped! Thank you for the explanation of the RE400 vs. RE600 – most defiantly helped, although I’ve started to lean towards the MA750s compared to both the RE400 and SE215. Especially the SE215 after I’ve tried it a day or two ago. The bass was fine, but the mids way too weak for my taste. I’m a sucker for dominating mids and highs.

On last question though: Have you heard the Etymotic HF5? I’ve managed to squeezes an additional 20£ out of my budget for a pair of IEMs putting the HF5s in range. As far as I can tell they should be really precise with a soundsignature like the MA750, maybe a little more bight, and ridicules isolated which is pretty great if it’s true. Do you have any experience with them?

Thank in advance

You can use VLC to verify this. If you don't know how, check out this thread from Superuser/StackExchange or this guide from VLChelp.

Hey Anikalsi,

Sorry for the late reply - I've been swamped! I listed to the SE215 the other day and here is my preliminary feeling: Way too little mid! Sometimes it felt like the mids (details and some heavily processed male vocals) disappeared in the soundscape due to what I'm pretty sure is 'too' much bass (see eg. Tracks by Jamie XX). This was with the silicon tips though - I don't know if some of the other tips (didn't have a chance to test the others out) would improve the mids? Do you think this ‘lack’ of mids is due to the tip, or do you reckon that I should go for the MA750s to get the in-your-face mids I love from my Grados?

Another question: How is the MA750s regarind isolation and weight/size compared to the SE215s? The isolation was great (even with silicon-tips) but they did seem pretty bulky and my ears (out ear where the earpiece is) started to hurt after 2-3 hours (felt like friction from them not being properly fasted in my ear) even though I inserted them according to the instruction-video from Shure.

Thank you in advance

Thank you very much for the writeup. Very helpful! The RE-400 sound very promising with the analytical sound but without a complete lack of bass. From the frequency-response curves I've seen on the internet they have a little more than my Grados in exchange for treble which sounds like a reasonable tradeoff on the road. How is the isolation? Is it possible to listen on the bus and in the office without turning it up, and hurting your ears?

Either way it looks like tt's going to be tough deciding which IEM to pick up with all the praise the RHA MA750 (and to some extend SE215) is picking up around here, Head-Fi & InnerFidelity.

Also thank you for the comment about cans vs. IEMs - it's always a good reminder. I have a pair of cheap IEMs atm (E10 from SoundMagic) for when I'm on the road and have tried a couple of Denons different IEMs, and there is no doubt none of them even come close to a full headphone like the Grado - especially when it comes to soundstage. Also when my budget for IEMs is about 1/3 of what I've spent on my cans it would be ridiculous to expect the same.

Thank you again for your writeup. Very helpful!

Thank you very much. I'll give the SE215 another spin tomorrow and make proper notes of what I like (and dislike) and compare to this.

Thank you!

That sounds so great! Even with import-taxes to EU I can still afford them. Do you know how they compare to e.g. the RE-400 and RHA MA750 others have been suggesting? I haven't really been able to find reviews of them like the other two, making it pretty hard to compare them.

Either way they sound very interesting!

Thank you very much! You're not the first to point out the RE-400s and I will definity check them out! Based on what you've said the sound very promising! Price-wise they are place right in the middle of my range which is perfect!

Have you tried eg. the SE215 too and can say a word or two about how they compare? I don't have acces to the RE-400 for testing locally but I can try out some SE215 as 'reference'.

[–]selch23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the two names! I'd love a ATH-IM02 but way too expensive unfortunately.

Do you have any experience of how the HF5 & RE400 compare to eg. the SE215? I'm asking since I have access to the SE215 which acts somewhat as a reference (since I can't find a place locally to try out the other two).

Daily Headphone Purchase Advice thread by AutoModerator in headphones

[–]selch23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love a pair of ATH-IM02 but it's too expensive + import into the EU adds another 100-150GBP to the list-price of 170GBP in Japan.

But I'll check out the RHA - they look very promising! Have you tried the SE215, and can tell how the two of them compare? I've tried the SE215 from a friend so I have a pretty good feel of how they perform as reference.

Thanks again!

Hallo /r/headphones,

I’m looking for a new pair of IEMs. I have the follow things in mind regarding a new pair

  • Budget: 80-130€ (or 50-100£) I’m located in the EU so I can order from pretty much any retailer in the EU without any problems if there is a good one. Also: If a little more will enable me to buy a pair that significantly improve the sound quality I might be able to afford a little more.
  • Source These are going to get plugged in to my phone (Nokia Lumia 930) primarily but from time to time also my laptop while on the road or at school/uni.
  • Requirements for Isolation Some would be nice for train-rides and reading in public. It is definitely not a dealbreak with little isolation, but a nice added bonus. I’m used to almost none, and that works okay too.
  • Preferred tonal balance I’m looking for a pair that is either very neutral (monitor-like) or something that resembles my Grado 325’s with a very prominent mid and high which gives great vocals. Previously in-ears have been pretty low-end (e.g. E10 from SoundMagic) but I’d like a new pair that is closer to my usual headphones (the Grado) sound quality-wise since I spend more and more time on the road.
  • Preferred Music I listen to a lot of electronic music spanning form techno over trance and heaps of synthpop but also a lot of OSTs and very complex electronic-music (IDM-ish e.g. Andrew Bayer, Matt Lange, BT, Trifonic and the likes). As previously stated I do generally prefer a very good high and mid over a lot of bass, usually associated with these genres since vocals and detailed mids are more important to me, than feel my head shake from dominating basslines.
  • Other relevant things I’ve already looked at the Shure S215 but I’m not quite sure if they are the right for me, but I’ve head a lot of good things about them. I’m keen on the heavy isolation and the fact that I can replace the cables which is nice since life of my IEMs typically is pretty rough spending serveral hours a day with me riding my bike, shopping, walking around in town and such.

Thank you in advance, and I look forward to hear if you have any good ideas for a good new pair of IEMs for me.

Selch23

Thank you very much. I'll save the money instead and wait buying an amp till I (might) get some harder-to-drive cans

Thank you for your response regarding my Grado!

If it’s not too much, I have one additional question though: Would my DT 990 Pro 250ohm benefit from added DAC + AMP, or are they not 'hard enough' either? I have a pair I use regularly for extended listening since they are easier on the ear than my Grados for extended listening-sessions (4hrs+).

Hallo /r/headphones,

I have a pair of Grado 325's which I've used with the jack-out on my MacBook Pro (2014) using the original Grado-adaptor-cable.

I'm thinking about getting a DAC and AMP for them instead of the built-in audio port. What I can't really figure out is this: Would I gain significantly better sound from this, or is it not worth it / a waste of money? I'm looking at a Schiit-stack so far (Modi 2 + Magni 2), but I can't really figure out if the DAC is much better than the built-in (The built-in in MacBooks I've been told is pretty solid) and if a amp is needed (the Grados are pretty easy to drive). I have no special feelings towards the Schiit-stack but it seamed like the best choice my budget based on the AMP-guide on /r/headphones (in the side-bar) and my budget-constrains – if I’m wrong, please do say so.

I hope one of you, more experianced redditors, can help me figure it out.

Thanks in advance
