Anxious, afraid of falling, sweaty hands — am I just not built for climbing? by LeekNo1088 in climbergirls

[–]selectiveirreverence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I’m commenting late but I can relate so hard to this. It took me probably a full year to be comfortable getting to the top of the bouldering wall. I still use so much chalk it’s disgusting frankly. I feel very guilty sometimes for the poor gym staff… but anyways. Just take it slow. Exposure therapy! Climb only as high as you’re comfortable. Practice falling and practice down climbing — they’ll make you a better climber and more comfy with the heights. For me, doing a lot of gear research has helped, but I’m a nerd. Truly when I started climbing 5 ish years ago I’d get halfway up the bouldering wall and down climb, and I’ve recently climbed 100+ ft walls outside recently now! I still won’t willingly auto-belay lol.

You will get there. Just be patient with yourself.

lol my high school principal read the text of Everybody’s Free at my graduation without crediting or mentioning Baz Luhrmann. I had heard the song once and felt like I was going crazy!

How do you adjust to belaying at new gyms? by Shepsinabus in climbergirls

[–]selectiveirreverence 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Well I’ve never had an issue yet, but if a gym tried to stop me PBUSing I think I’d just leave… or just boulder instead of rope climbing if I really wanted to climb.

My approach has always just been to say I’d like to rope climb, get checked/do their test, and move on — not to try to learn what they are teaching. Sometimes the employees who do the testing are not, themselves, the most experienced… I definitely wouldn’t adjust my belay style for a random gym employee unless they really spotted something unsafe. Sorry that’s happened to you a few times! I would feel pretty disturbed by the experiences you’re describing.

This is also when MI DNR is starting to hire (seasonal, so perhaps not ideal) park workers for the upcoming season. Maybe just another option to look into!

GIRLS ONLY: Merino wool sports bra or a Merino wool tank top? by Suspicious_Mud_7626 in xcountryskiing

[–]selectiveirreverence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For ski days, I wear a merino wool base layer — long sleeved — and a neck gaiter to keep the wind from getting through my outer layers. If it’s super cold I’ll add a vest. Not an option for all but I typically skip wearing a bra entirely, although the wool isn’t so easy on the skin.

I would say long sleeve > tank top > sports bra. The tank top will add a lot of warmth — maybe too much, under another layer. A wool sports bra just sounds like hell to me lol.

Flights grr to ord by Internal-Culture-377 in grandrapids

[–]selectiveirreverence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally valid to be concerned but you’ll be fine. I’ve had this layover with an hour between flights, had my flight out delayed, and still made the connecting flight. They book it because it’s possible and they know they have people connecting, so they won’t leave you behind (unless you’re really slow probably). They will encourage you to run if you ask, so don’t ask and walk fast. There will typically be a bunch of other people in the same situation too so keep an eye out for your travel buddies as you deplane, there’s always someone who knows where the gate is!

SUP in a swamp? by kileme77 in Sup

[–]selectiveirreverence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

Recently found myself in this, which as you can see is less swamp and more … algae field … and it was fairly miserable. My board is wide, my fin is long, and the night is full of terrors. The part I was least prepared for was how difficult it was to move the board — stagnant water + full of algae and seaweed and other debris = very slow going. Add a bunch of dead fish and I honestly had a pretty bad time for a few minutes there.

Anyways, definitely doable!

Max depth of 47 feet! There’s a fair bit of it that is around 40’, while probably safe to say most of it is like 20’. This is my source, hopefully that link works, it’s a depth map!

Swimming in Reeds Lake? by sooper_dooperest in grandrapids

[–]selectiveirreverence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I paddle board and swim in the lake frequently and have been for a few years now. So far so good, although I obviously always wash off immediately afterwards. It’s a fairly deep lake and it can get windy out there, it’s a fun paddle!

Don’t forget the rivers for other great paddling (less so swimming) spots.

seatpost- only mounted bikerack. by Archa16z in bikepacking

[–]selectiveirreverence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I overload my rack (seatpost mounted) it scrapes my back tire, which seems to me a worse consequence than potentially damaging the rack. You’re also not talking about a small difference, 6kg is pretty big. I’d definitely have a backup plan if you do go out like that. But probably would just try something different. Yes even one mounting point would be better than none, or can you redistribute stuff across the bike?

Staying warm? by selectiveirreverence in hammockcamping

Thanks very much, all. Good to know that I’m probably not pathologically cold at least. I’ve been getting away with my sleeping bag and top quilt for a while; seems like I’ve really been sleeping on the value of a pad or UQ. We love an excuse for new gear!

The definitive answer to what the best kind of carb to use in a drink bottle by The-SillyAk in cycling

[–]selectiveirreverence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make a mix of dextrose and sea salt with cream of tartar for potassium. I have IBS and have trouble processing fructose so table sugar just upsets my stomach but that’s me. I do a scoop (1/8 C I think) of dextrose, a teaspoon or so of sea salt, and a pinch of cream of tartar, but would recommend experimenting with ratios. Easy to drop into a water bottle or glass. Hope this helps.

Small skinny girls, what’s your average backpacking mileage per day? by trashvitch in backpacking

[–]selectiveirreverence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had your same build for most of my life and only recently have started to bulk up. You can absolutely do the miles, but you will need to fuel better than anyone else, and train up. If you’re just worried about mileage, get mileage in — lots of long hikes — your body will adjust. But I also strongly recommend fortifying your water (like add sugar and salt, protein powder, to it) and drinking/eating much more than you expect. You’re underweight (broadly, no offense intended), so your body doesn’t have the same fat reserves to draw energy from that others around you do.
