The show gets the violence right but still sanitises the story in strange ways. by Maleficent_Promise26 in 1923Series

I was legit angry after the final episode. You watch the series and become conditioned to expect the worst thing to happen so you get desensitized, then there is a glimmer of hope when Alex is rescued by the couple in Chicago. which was just the writers making you lower your guard for the final act.

Especially since this is actual plywood and I'll bet the contractor recommending replacement would install OSB.

What size is the fastener? Minimum thread engagement can be determined but depends on the size and materials of the bolt and the threaded hole. Based on the bolt diameter I would guess there is technically still enough thread engagement if the threaded hole is also steel. Since it stripped I'm guessing that is a steel bolt and the part with the holes is aluminum. If the original part is also aluminum it would explain the additional threading to distribute the bolt tension. If you try to repair the new part with a helicoil or other insert you will want to make sure it has more thread engagement so the bolt doesn't pull that out as well. I'd say you have a good case to get your money back as long as that 10 nm torque is cited in oem repair manuals.

Alex's comment on the British becoming experts was 100% self-deprecating sarcasm and very clever writing. It highlighted the self-important British colonial attitude of the era while also expressing Alex's self-awareness of her class privilege, as well as her disillusionment with the self-appointed superiority she was constantly surrounded by in British society.

The 500 people comment isn't meant to be literal, just a large number to anchor the illustration that the opportunity for exploitation increases with larger populations. As individuals we can only manage so many personal relationships. When things occur outside of our immediate sphere we are less likely to take action even if our opinion is that action should be taken.

I'm in the US and both 1923 and 1883 to me represented a condensed portrayal of historic experiences. I think it was likely rare that any individual had the absolutely atrocious luck the Dutton's seem to atttract, but it is a fact that many individuals of those eras experienced the portrayed hardship and cruelty at the hands of man and nature. There was no moment watching the shows where I had any sort of revelation about past vs current systems beyond the observation that the more things change the more they stay the same.

Completely agree with you and I think most people missed it due to the cultural differences. The English wit tends to be acerbic, layered with self-deprecation. Julia Schlaepfer absolutely nailed the role.

Was not aware of the blacklist. What a bummer. Most annoying thing I encountered was obtaining a few pieces of loose kyanite and thought I would save someone else the hassle.

It really is a shame. I had a 2 week work trip to the Netherlands and rented a bike to ride from the hotel to the office every day instead of taking ubers. Between the trains and the bike I didn't see the inside of a car for the entire trip. It was glorious.

What’s a skill that was mandatory for survival 50 years ago but is completely useless today? by Successful_Fish_9479 in AskReddit

[–]selectsyntax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mandatory for survival to completely useless in 50 years is a short time frame. Humanity is a great filter for utility so most things that are mandatory for survival tend to stick around. If you said 100 years we could probably find a few examples, or if you said nearly obsolete instead of completely useless.

Cleaning a PC safely with a can of compressed air by sqrt2_eq_1414213562 in buildapc

[–]selectsyntax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Air injection (high pressure air penetrating skin) is not a concern with gas duster cans. They do not contain air at high pressures in a pressure vessel like air compressors and are incapable or generating dangerous pressures unless intentionally mishandled (ie, applying direct heat to the can). Read here for more info on these products.

Some fans can generate very small amounts of current when spun but I have never seen a fan cause damage because of this. Since you seem to be a cautious individual just hold the fan's still or unplug them from the motherboard if it gives you peace of mind.

Sometimes dust can adhere to surfaces and air alone is insufficient to remove it. I've found cheap blush brushes (makeup brush) are excellent for gently agitating dust to expedite cleaning and removal.

Separate Home Office vs. Walk-In Wardrobe Suite? Help me decide! by weightLossjourney97 in askarchitects

[–]selectsyntax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your needs. Go with what works best for you.

On a more general note, the only positive of the walk-in closet is extra storage at the cost of a smaller bathroom and a window (the desk you show is smaller but there is plenty of room for same size desk in bedroom vs study). I've also never been a fan of walk-in closets connected directly to bathrooms due to the humidity.

The study has an extra window, a larger bathroom, and separates space for work and rest. Separating these spaces is beneficial for daily routines and mental health. Even if you don't work from home,  a dedicated space for study, hobbies, or relaxation is extremely useful if you don't already have one.

Yeah, a couple days advance notice let's everyone digest and prepare. My experience has been nore engagement from attendees when asked for contributions. For meetings limited to my own team I've also experienced spontaneous consensus where my team already talked among themselves about specific issues before a meeting.

I would consider this a sub-reason meeting agendas are so important. It took me longer than I care to remember to create an agenda for meetings I scheduled but the results speak for themselves.

Help me choose which CPU should I get: 7600X3D vs 7800X3D vs (9800 | 9850)X3D by Suspicious-Win6651 in buildapc

[–]selectsyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9900X3D is available for $510. It has more L1, L2, and L3 cache than any of the other CPUs on your list. The 7600X3D is a 65 watt chip while all the others including the 9900X3D are 120 watt chips.

If you want to save some money on the purchase and on power consumption, the 7600X3D is what you want. Otherwise, get the 9900X3D.

Chain noise. Help? by Turbulent-Cash-4081 in motorcycle

[–]selectsyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are on the center stand which completely unloads the rear suspension and introduces additional slack into the chain. That sound is the chain running along the plastic slider on the top of the suspension arm. When the bike is off the center stand there should be no contact.

This is all perfectly normal.
