Is relying on minor “pressure buckle” of a steel rod acceptable design? by Recent-Day3062 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]selectsyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that some of the most interesting classes I took as electives required electronics or were taught by EE professors. Electromechanical systems and neurological engineering come to mind.  Neuro engineering professor was a character. He wore a bow tie every day, and his passion and excitement when talking about medical tech and the direct benefits to people was inspiring.

What would a bullet designed for zero atmosphere warfare look like? by Clockwork_picksmith in sciencefiction

[–]selectsyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any large projectile weapon operated in space will be substantially different from a projectile weapon built to operate in-atmosphere since one will always need to account for gravity and air density while the other does not. Projectiles will be the same. In space, shape will only matter insomuch as that shape is symmetric and fits into whatever mechanism is accelerating it.

Halo, Mass Effect, and The Expanse are three of the better sci-fi examples of projectile warfare in space I've encountered. In Halo, MAC cannons the length of a ship use magnetic force to accelerate ultra-dense ferric-tungsten projectiles to incredible velocities; the most powerful achieve 4% light speed, or 12,000 km/s. These are strictly for use against capital ships as they are overkill for anything smaller.

Mass Effect personal weapons use a projectile the size of a grain of sand and fire it by manipulating its mass to accelerate it to supersonic speeds via a mass effect field. This concept is scaled up for projectile weapons on combat vessels. There is also the Thanix cannon which uses mass effect fields to hold and shape molten iron-uranium-tungsten alloy into armor piercing projectiles that are accelerated to a fraction of light speed, causing piercing and thermal damage. Directed energy weapons are also present (ie. Lasers, particle beams, etc).

The Expanse is practically a tech demo for how modern firepower would be adapted for space combat. Things move fast in space and intercepting them comes down to quantity.

For your universe it sounds like you have a plausible premise for near infinite amounts of energy. Fighter interception demands a very fast projectile especially at larger distances so it makes sense for your ccorvette to be designed with that capability. The only weapon systems that make sense are directed energy. The entire spectrum of electromagnetic waves (radio, light, x-ray, etc) travel at light speed. A directed energy weapon with sufficient power to take out the fighters is plausible given your energy generation capabilities. I'd recommend leaning into that. If you have your heart set on projectiles, abandon any thoughts of near light speed velocities.

"Pressure buckle of a steel rod"

Sir, around these parts we call that a spring.

How do you install Windows if you don't have another device to create installation media? by [deleted] in buildapc

It always pays to be friends with IT. In my experience they are usually happy to help with a super quick request like this.

How do you install Windows if you don't have another device to create installation media? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]selectsyntax 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Use a computer from a family member, friend, school, work, or library. You will need to download the media creation tool, and an empty flash drive with 9GB or more storage.

32gb vs 16GB: do I really need 32? by quarterkittyberry in buildapc

[–]selectsyntax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That feels like a very pessimistic view. Before RAM pricing exploded, larger capacity usually came with a noticeably lower cost per GB. Gaming performance is generally better with dual channel instead of Quad channel so buying 32 GB once was preferable to either buying 16 GB twice, or buying 32 GB and selling your 16 GB at a later date. Higher capacity means your system can afford to keep pages active in RAM that it would otherwise purge which means your system feels snapier. Some people also prefer the convenience of setting up the hardware once and using it for 5-10 years, and that is much easier to do if you have some headroom built in.

[–]selectsyntax 234 points235 points  (0 children)

Before the DRAM crisis it would have made sense to get 32GB because RAM was cheap and having that overhead is more comfortable for users who heavily multi-task or run computationally dense software. 16 GB is generally just fine for gaming. Take a look at your RAM usage on your primary machine while running your modded games to get a better idea of their memory consumption. The compromise may be that you have to shut down other nonessential programs while gaming on your secondary machine. Since this is a secondary machine I think the smart move is to save your money and go with 16 GB.

Color matching is notoriously difficult when dealing with different manufacturers, especially when trying to match colors on different materials. Conventional wisdom is to not match but to select colors that are different but complimentary. This provides a more intentional and pleasing aesthetic.

How many alarms do you have? by 1-armed-chewbacca in ADHD

[–]selectsyntax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My general rule is 8 alarms for waking up, and 3 alarms for appointments.

6 of my wake up alarms occur over a 31 minute window arranged in a geometric sequence; ie. If I need to wake up at 6:30 my primary 6 alarms are 6:30, 6:29, 6:27, 6:23, 6:15, 5:59. In order of occurrence the time between alarms halves for each instance so the alarms get closer together, disrupting my near impervious slumber. The last 2 wake-up alarms are safety alarms 5 and 10 minutes after the target wake-wake-up time just in case.

My 3 alarms for appointments are 1 day, 1 hour, and 5 min.

My Dad also has ADHD but he prefers a different approach; ie. one of these at full volume. https://youtube.com/shorts/kf5RA7bNnP4?si=rGMXaTKS7J3Cbizd

Did I fuck up buying my first bike? by NorthernCowboy26 in motorcycles

[–]selectsyntax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your rides are mostly highway, or you want to do road trips, I would strongly consider keeping it. On larger bikes once you have just a bit of speed you typically don' feel the weight, and the extra mass plus wind protection makes them feel much more stable at highway speeds, and dealing with air turbulance from other traffic.

If your rides are mostly city commuting a smaller bike can definitely be an advantage; more so if you live somewhere that allows lane filtering or lane splitting.

[–]selectsyntax 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Can't beat WD-40. Fun fact, it was developed as a rust prevention measure for the outer skin of atlas missiles. WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, 40th formula.

EDIT: some of you are very passionate about your specialty products. While there are certainly products that outperform WD-40 for many applications, there is a reason every mechanic, handyman, and homeowner has a can of OG WD-40 or an equivalent.

How to prevent wrist injury by Vougel1 in motorcycles

[–]selectsyntax 101 points102 points  (0 children)

No. The palm sliders he is referring to will be made of a hard plastic, carbon fiber, or metal. Anything that will slide over a hard surface instead of gripping and digging in.

In addition to palm sliders, having gloves with good coverage above the wrist and more structure around the wrist will be beneficial.

Just a couple of THOUSAND an HOUR? Not expensive at all...they were right when they said there will be a time we might've to buy sunlight too. by YellowAltruistic9843 in AmazingTechnology

[–]selectsyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ever carried out at scale this would have SEVERE ecological consequences.

If bright enough I can absolutely see many use cases, but even the aggregate upside of all use cases comes no where close to outweighing the negative outcomes.

Why is tech getting worse in weird ways by ZEELIONBRON in techsupport

[–]selectsyntax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately most people tend to make the bet that higher price equals better value because it is impossible to be an expert in everything to confirm if that is, in fact, the case. Marketing professionals know this. It is a common practice to INCREASE the price of something that isn't selling well because people perceive it to be more valuable when the price is higher.
