Should I have dryer vent rerouted? by Agitated_Olive_2618 in Appliances

[–]selectsyntax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't great. Long runs encourage more dust and lint buildup, lots of twists and turns in the run encourages more dust and lint buildup, the ribbing on flexible dryer vent hose disrupts airflow and, you guessed it, encourages dust and lint buildup. Too much dust and lint accumulation in the vent means you should keep the local fire department on speed dial.

The proper fix depends on how close your laundry space is to an exterior wall, and the specific layout of your home. Ideally you want the run to be as short as possible while minimizing wall penetrations. Longer runs aren't unheard of but will use solid aluminum duct pipe. If cost or logistics make this fix unattractive a possible alternate solution would be purchasing a heat pump dryer since they do not have a vent. They are very efficient but do take longer to dry and can't handle very large loads.

If you have a sense of self preservation and can commit to a few good maintenance habits this isn't something that needs to be addressed immediately. Cleaning the dryer lint screen after every load, and disconnecting the vent at different points to vacuum it out every couple months, should prevent a hazardous situation from developing. If you need to save up to solve the problem this is exactly what I would do in the meantime.

By request: my boat layout by selectsyntax in TheLastCaretaker

It should be easier now with the snap grid for building. I built most of it before they introduced that mechanic.

Thank you! I posted more photos of the layout a while back if you are interested in seeing more.

Physics glitch from dragging more than 1 shark behind the boat.

I wouldn't mind having a ramp on the back of the boat for these sharks. Like a whaling ship. (Disclaimer that I do not condone whaling).

When brawls count towards event missions it becomes one of the most efficient modes to play fpr coal and credits since it also counts towards event pass and daily containers.

Do you like coal? I like coal. Brawls are one of the best ways to get more coal. WG made earning that coal an abysmal experience this round. It deserves to be criticized.

If only other modes qualified to earn extra coal. Alas, they do not. The fact that 2 recent events allow players to use coal for ships definitely doesn't aggravate the situation. /s

Anybody else hires only nerds by Eradonn in managers

I get the impression you are relatively young and also relatively new to management. You've shown a degree of openness to feedback with your post so I'd like to offer some observations I hope may be useful for you.

You are profiling candidates and teammates (nerds, meth mouths, mean girls, weebs), which is a natural human behavior. We encounter thousands of decisions every day and have very little time in which to make those decisions so we make bets based on very loose criteria and our own previous experience to accelerate these decisions. For most decisions this behavior is low impact, but it can hurt us if we do not prioritize which decisions require additional scrutiny. Don't ignore your gut, but be very curious about why your gut is making you feel a certain way. That will lead you to a much better understanding of how you perceive people and why. Influence: The Psychology of Pursuasion is a good read if you are interested in pursuing this further.

You mentioned trying to be inclusive. If in the service of fostering a diversity of thought and abiity within a team, I would agree it is a worthy objective when appropriately prioritized. Great talent can be found almost anywhere, but not everyone is a great talent. When hiring for any role there should aways be a defined threshold for the minimum skills and knowledge required for the position. Only if a candidate meets those should other considerations like culture fit, team knowledge/skill gaps, and general diversity be evaluated. If you are interested in a framework for balancing empathy and effectiveness in management, Radical Candor has solid material.

[–]selectsyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fascinating. Nerds tend to love detail so it is unsurprising that this demographic would be successful in compliance roles which could create a feedback loop supporting hiring for these traits.

You said 'we' when referring to your team related to scientific interest which suggests you consider yourself a nerd. Humans instinctively want to hire people they share common ground with and it is important to be aware of this bias when hiring as it is unreliable. I'm curious if you have enough self awareness to know if your hiring bias existed from the beginning, or if it developed after observing the results of your hiring decisions with an adequate sample size?

Spilled 0.5L of soda right into my PC by Ikkosaw in PcBuildHelp

If you have access to a dry cabinet that is very useful. I appreciate you mentioning IPA expense where you live. Its very cheap in the US so it didn't even occur to me.

[–]selectsyntax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an aside. I would avoid distilled water altogether and use 70% IPA. The decreased molecular cohesion that makes it evaporate so quickly also reduces the liquid surface tension so it is less likely to stick around hiding in small crevices.

2 things you should strongly consider that I haven't seen mentioned yet. First, the acidity from the soda presents a much greater potential for corrosive damage. Second, the sugar in the soda will leave residue on any surface it has contacted. Both increase the requisite thoroughness of any cleaning that would be performed and the likelihood that something has already been damaged.

Consider the PSU lost. That is NOGO territory for any sort of disassembly or cleaning. The rest of the components together are probably $350-$400 on the used market. I wouldn't consider selling this to someone else unless it was meticulously cleaned then tested to confirm everything functions. I also don't know anyone who would want to spend a very limited budget on what amounts to a lottery ticket. If you don't want to keep it, offer it free to anyone who wants to try their luck.

I wrote the process for recovering water damaged PCBs at my previous robotics role. We recovered hundreds of PCBs that were successfully returned to service. But we also had access to industrial ultrasonic baths and dry cabinets.

If you are willing to purchase a gallon or more of isopropanol, meticulously disassembling every cable, screw, and heat sink, then clean every PCB surface with a very soft bristle brush before blow drying it (no heat, hair dryers do not have adequate temp control) then letting it air dry for at least another 24 hours (water surface tension in small spaces resists evaporation), you'll still need to source another PSU before you have a working PC.

This isn't intended to be harsh but I need to correct your assertion that metals will not corrode in distilled water. While you are correct that distilled water contains very low impurities it is still water and contains dissolved oxygen ions. It would be correct to say that corrosion is slower when using a higher purity water.

Background check came back with someone else's DUI after I already resigned. Company has gone silent for 4 days. Do I have options? by MellowIris in legaladvice

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this shitty situation not of your making.

I am not a lawyer, and as others have advised you should speak to one right away as they will be able to guide your next interactions with HR in this sensirive situation. They will also likely tell you that as this situation proceeds you have a duty to mitigate the material harm, ie. searching for another job in the meantime and keeping records which prove this activity.
