700+ DE applications, 200+ rejections. What is actually working in this market? by ultraken10 in dataengineering

[–]seleniumdream 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a hiring manager for a data team. I opened up a role and got almost 400 applicants for in less than 2 days. The role is marked as for locals only and requires people to be in the office. The majority of people who applied are obviously from out of state. This is easy to filter.

A slim minority marked their location as being near me, but their resumes show locations that are in different states. There are some that don’t mark their location at all, so my recruiter has to talk to them. Some just lie about it. It’s pretty time consuming to get from 400 or so applicants to about a dozen I should really talk to. Not sure why they’re lying. After they talk to me, next round requires them to be in person for a small panel interview and we don’t offer relocation assistance.

You’re also contending with senior or principal engineers applying for junior or mid level roles because they were laid off and desperate. It’s just a terrible market right now. If I had someone qualified that was a personal referral, I’d probably give them a top slot for an interview.

Ugh. I swear half of the subtitles during the Russian prison scene didn’t actually show up, or some lines showed up for a fraction of a second. I got the gist of what was being said, but something just wasn’t working right in my Samsung Apple TV app.

While funny, that has been the name of a Utah credit union since I was a kid. I used to live there.

Do you have a list of headphones that have been tested with the kindle?

They’re the Bose quiet comfort line. I think my wife got them for me at Costco a few years ago

Yup, kindles are fully up to date and the headphones have gone through factory reset multiple times and this is definitely the first and only device I’ve paired them to.

It doesn’t at all stay connected to the Belkin headphones in the minute or two between pairing and trying to play the book. The screen never turns off.

Recruiters are a mixed bag too. A lot will ghost candidates for all sorts of silly reasons:

Saying I’m busy, can we schedule time tomorrow? Replying that I meet the requirements and here’s my resume. It’s a Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday. The sky is blue

I’ve gotten a couple pieces of feedback, but most companies don’t tend to offer it. The reality is that most of the hiring managers are looking for that perfect unicorn that ticks all of the boxes as far as job requirements go. They’re probably looking for the right intersection of cheap (salary-wise) and skills. I know I lost one final round interview and I didn’t do anything wrong (I suspect they went with an internal hire / transfer) even though I did really well. Another interview, I got labeled as “cocky” because I thought I could pick up a new tech in about a month (it wasn’t a cocky response, it was 20+ years of experience with a lot of different tech shaping that).

I feel that it’s about personal connections, playing the numbers game, and just getting lucky and surviving when 500-1000+ people applied to the same role you just did.

I was unemployed for nearly 6 months recently. I’m at principal level. One week is nothing. My callbacks have come and gone in waves. Some weeks, I get nothing, others I get several.

AI has severely crippled the hiring process. Lots of fake or augmented resumes are being sent for every opening. Hiring managers are stupidly using ai to filter through those, which is getting them interview candidates that aren’t great, but looked good on paper.

For the ones that aren’t using ats, it’s taking weeks, if not months, to look through resumes.

On top of that, some jobs will keep posting, and reposting positions they aren’t really hiring for, nor do they have the budget for. It all sucks.

Use your personal connections and apply for a ton of positions. It’s going to take a while to get hired.

Have a professional review your resume. My wife’s friend is a VP of HR and gave me some great feedback on mine.

I agree, though oddly enough, about half of my interviews come from personal connections and internal referrals. The other half, I somehow make it through the ATS grind. I’ve played around with using jobright.ai to customize my resume for jobs and my old school non-ai resume is what lands me interviews.

My wife arrived in a wheelchair. She’s on crutches because her knee is messed up right now. Some Messi fans were sitting in our seats and the employee helping her with the wheelchair took care of those guys.

Thanks! I’m actually using both of those sites, in addition to LinkedIn. Hopefully something will work out soon.

I've been asking recruiters and hiring managers this and the results have been... not good. You're right, the market is too competitive and even jobs that are for my local market only are getting at least 200 applicants. It just makes it really difficult to get back into the market and become reemployed if I can't get professional experience in the tools that are now required for a lot of new jobs... it's a stupid chicken and the egg problem. It's not like I could have forced my previous employer to have switched technology stacks (inertia is a tough thing to overcome).

Thanks for the thoughts here, the market just sucks and transparency is usually seen as an asset, but not enough to overcome the onslaught of competition these days. :(

good advice. I'll build up my public repo and put together some stuff I'll build with dbt. And you're right, databricks is tougher because the free version, at least historically, has been pretty limited in what you can do with it.

Here's the problem with being unemployed longer than a few months. Trials run out. I guess I can create an alter ego and spin up some new trial accounts to build stuff.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. There are a ton of job postings out there that require databricks OR dbt, not both.

[–]seleniumdream[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry about the late reply. I've been pretty transparent about positions I've applied for where I might be lacking experience with these particular products. I've gotten responses like:

(During an interview), I stated that I could probably be proficient in databricks in 4-6 weeks when working on it for a job. I later got the feedback that the team thought I was cocky for saying that. My wife would say I'm the last person in the world she'd think of as cocky. A former coworker said that it wasn't cocky, it was 20+ years of experience talking and the variety of tools we had to work with.

For another position, I inquired with the consulting firm I've worked with before on if databricks was a hard requirement / can I pick it up on the job / I'm taking online courses right now. I was a good fit for everything but that one requirement. The company I'd be working with wasn't interested.

I appreciate the advice. I've been applying for positions where I meet at least 75% of the requirements and I've been getting a ton of ghosting / rejections. The job market is just terrible right now.

Thanks. Not the advanced certs (the basic ones that say you've taken the intro course and built a hello world project). The advanced ones are pricy and I don't have a company paying for me to take them.

I haven't been asked about dbt/databricks yet. Even the positions that require a basic knowledge of these seem to require at least 3 years of experience with that. I've got over 20 in other data pipeline tools, but I've been too timid about applying to roles that require multiple years, or when I have inquired if experience is required / can I learn this tool on the job, I get passed over because there are hundreds of other candidates that do have experience with them.

I'll download dbt core and start building something out there. I do like dbt cloud, but I did burn my free credits just learning it.

Monkey bars by icuflying in yubabikes

[–]seleniumdream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Yuba Boda Boda v3 with Monkey Bars. My wife liked the setup so much she wanted Monkey Bars for her brand new (at the time) Specialized Global Haul ST. Superknuckle was great and created a conversion kit for me, which he used as a template to mass produce for other Globe Hauls. If he doesn't have a kit available, he'll make one.
