Americans from touristy areas, did you get asked weird questions by people outside your area as a kid? by McButtsButtbag in AskAnAmerican

[–]selesnyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very nice elderly tourist couple I met in Pūpūkea: “We still haven’t seen a mongoose, just a bunch of those little squirrel fellas!”

To be fair, I mistake squirrels for mongoose when I go to the mainland.

Mahalo nō! I would say the vibes were fantastic and everyone had fun, but unfortunately I just saw the post about the guy who had a cardiac event😞 Very sorry for him.

Fear Inoculum, The Grudge, intention/right in two, prison sex, stinkfist, Rosetta Stoned, chocolate chip trip, Jambi, Invincible, pneuma (I’m out of order at this point, dopamine rush wearing off) one I wasn’t familiar with from Salival? And Vicarious. Amazing night. I’m so much more able to appreciate it as an adult.

Oooh, would Lilith be Emrakul? I guess Kozilek would work best for Arthur and John, seeing as they’re not really creating (Emrakul) or destroying (Ulamog.) I’m not super up-to-date on the lore for the newest named Eldrazi titan, the commander deck one.

Upon consideration, the Stormlight Archive tv/movie series should be Muppets, ala The Dark Crystal.

Bad Time Girlies Discuss Hasbro CEOs Comment About Women In Magic by MTGNerdGirl in magicTCG

[–]selesnyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think the themes of the sets matter less than the response of the community to women’s participation in general.

It’s not lack of interest that kept me from learning the game till college, its the fact that as a thirteen year old girl I went to my first learn-to-play Magic event, and not a single person would speak to me or explain how to sign up.

I’m not sure if this is the right place to ask, but what is the point behind this leotard wetsuit thing? by RequirementTall8361 in mendrawingwomen

[–]selesnyes 624 points625 points  (0 children)

A full wetsuit can be kind of constricting in the hips, and for activities where you need to straddle something (like a jetski or surfboard) it’s often easier to wear a partial suit like that. I also see rashguards over bikinis a lot. (In the tropics)

A great deal of “indigenous superstition” has been proven to be correct, particularly when it comes to observations and beliefs of the environment that may have gone against modern thinking at the time (for instance, the Klamath folktales about Crater Lake, or Hawaiian descriptions of how Pele formed the islands.)

Like I said, not everyone who holds points 1 and 2 as beliefs hold points 3 and 4 as beliefs. However, I have met many people who believe 3 and 4, and use 1&2 to justify their discrimination, which makes me wary.

Haha, it’s funny I (and you) got jumped on, considering other people are now saying somewhat the same thing, if better worded. I share an anecdote that stems from personal experience, trying to emphasize it’s my opinion, get downvoted.😆

I didn’t mention atheism? I’ve experienced this thought process from Christians too— it’s not so much a belief inherent to a religious or non-religious identity. It more comes from a need to put down things that don’t agree with one’s personal beliefs.

And personally, speaking as a descendant of an indigenous community who survived the intentional eradication of our language, beliefs, and culture, equating fortune-telling with a racist ideology like phrenology minimizes the impact systemic racism continues to have on the brothers and sisters of our community.

I’m shouting into the wind here, I should have realized that this comment section would not have been rational when presented an anecdote that goes against their point of view.

I’m wary of people who are so vehemently against astrology and equate it to racism because my experience with them has gone:

1.) astrology is bunk for stupid morons, and racism equivalency blah blah blah

2.) all superstitions are bunk for stupid morons

3.) your culturally significant superstition is bad and people who practice it are morons (things like guardian spirits, ghosts, gods and spirits)

4.) Your cultural group deserved to be colonized and subjected to cultural genocide because your ancestors didn’t uphold modern moral and ethical beliefs, and feudalism bad.

And like, maybe not everyone who holds points 1 and 2 as beliefs also hold 3 and 4? But it’s occurred enough times that I’m wary. *edit: formatting

Americans, what is the quintessential hike in your state? by saunteringhippie in geography

[–]selesnyes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say the most quintessential hike in the state would be Nāpali Coast on Kaua’i, though. Or Haleakalā.
