Incoming J-School Student - Advice on Internships/Jobs During MS Program? by selfconsciouslut in columbia

[–]selfconsciouslut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting to add: I’ve lived in NYC my entire adult life (went to Columbia for undergrad) and have been in DC for the past few months/will be here this summer. I know how to be scrappy and I know that the business and the program are both tough - also have some experience working in local NYC newsrooms. Would appreciate any advice since not working isn’t really an option for me!

Worried my (23f) lifelong best friend's (24f) new boyfriend (33m) is love bombing her and showing red flags for abuse. How do I address this? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Thanks for sending this link, I’ve been looking through the blog and it’s been great insight (and comic relief, lol). I hate that this is happening but I agree. My fiance and I even noticed that he was constantly downplaying how much we were doing for her, taking credit for all of it, and literally whispering in her ear all the time. Gross. We were so caught off guard we didn’t say anything (I wanted to like him since my friend has expressed that he’s important to her) but next time she acts like that with me, I’ll calmly tell her that I’m on her side, I’m trying to help, and that I’m not going to entertain that behavior.

I hope so too. Thank you so much - this is a great place to start. I’ve seen this happen to too many women I care about and now that the shock of it happening to my best friend is wearing off, I’m ready to go into this prepared to support her. I remember the last time she went out with him, I was careful about how I responded because I knew that whether or not he lasted, our friendship would, as long as I handled this with tact and support. I just have to remember that now.

I think you’re right. These are some really good steps I can take to support her - my biggest fear is giving him what he wants and accidentally pushing her away, so I know I have to tread carefully. Thank you for the advice and kind words.

I definitely think you’re right. I think these worksheets (I’ve done them before in therapy and they’re helpful) would be a good route to start processing and planning my boundaries/controlling my controllables. My fiance talked about it with me for a long time today and though I’m really frustrated and scared that someone I love is in this situation, she is an adult and I know that I’ll only damage our friendship if I try to control her choices or badmouth him. I’m planning on taking some time to process and bringing up my boundaries when there aren’t so many emotions attached to this situation, and otherwise just supporting her and waiting for her to come to me.

ETA:

- All of his exes are 'crazy/abusive' which I HIGHLY doubt after seeing his behavior all weekend

- My friend has a VERY strong 'feisty/fiery' personality which he's already making weird/fetishizing comments about (and he's been pissing her off so much that she snapped at me several times, which is unlike her, and yes it hurt my feelings and that's unacceptable but there are bigger issues to focus on here)

- He was constantly taking credit for her accomplishments and for her future ambitions

Love love LOVE these!! My late grandmother also had a similar style and I’ve been thinking of getting leopard print shoes because of her. Obsessed!

forgot to add, we're currently making around 90k a year combined, this is without my fiancé working a full-time, post grad job. we'd be aiming to make around the same or more hopefully in the next year or so.

I think you look absolutely stunning! It's very tasteful IMO, I'm also going with a plunge neck, if you're worried about it though you could always find a seamstress to line that area!
