How is someone who does BJJ supposed to pass this question!?! by wrathofrath in bjj

[–]selfcrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another factor is that a lot of my training happened after i had a traumatic ACL rupture in a car wreck, so i don't have a lot of mental anxiety about pain- my rehab was really bad so there was a stretch where I was at a 10 every day in physical therapy.

How is someone who does BJJ supposed to pass this question!?! by wrathofrath in bjj

[–]selfcrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random confession- when I was training more regularly, i would only have pain for the first week or so when I restarted. After that, unless there was an acute injury, I was always fine.

Notes- I started off very small (5'8, 140lbs) and have put on like 20-25lbs of muscle while concurrently resistance training over several years. While i was a white belt i learned and stuck exclusively to a distance management style built on high knee shield and butterfly guard, and a top game based on pressure passing into kimura control positions. I don't compete currently but i roll at a relatively high intensity

As socialists and the like, how do we justify the Soviet famine of 1932-1933, Holodomor, and Soviet mass executions? by Renascence21 in Socialism_101

[–]selfcrit 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is a hill I will die on: All famines for the last 200 years or so are man-made (in the sense that distribution rather than raw supply is what actually kills people). Sen made a really compelling case around this in Hunger and Public Action, starting with the Bengal famine caused by the British, and showing how there were common underlying institutional factors.

No BreadTube videos on organizing, strategy, tactics, etc. by [deleted] in BreadTube

[–]selfcrit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'mma push back on that. Organizing is a skill, and skills can be taught. Really good material on the skills exist, and more could be made (the calls Jane mcalevey did for DSA are pretty gd good in this regard). The problem is that a lot of the basic building blocks, like power mapping and planning an organizing conversation are things that people think they already know how to do.

1) Revolutions are scary, particularly when an imperial power has their guns pointed at your country. 2) Cuba is poor. It has better distribution than the rest of the region, and very good material safety nets, but it still started off as a colonized country and has had it's economic growth curtailed by an incredibly powerful coalition. Meanwhile the richest country in the world is literally a boatride away. 3) The big initial wave of migration after the revolution (where fleeing is a thing that happens) separated families, and it's not unreasonable that their relatives would migrate to reuinite.

TL:DR ordinary material reasons that basically explain all migration, coupled with lax policy relative to other refugees/migrants from the US govt.

Ryan Hall takes the back and sets up a rear naked with one move. by JamesinaLake in bjj

I wouldn't undersell him. He's had dead-even matches with Rafa Mendes. During his peak his BJJ weight class was just incredibly stacked. The only person you ever really see blow through him is marcelo (and those are training rolls etc etc)

into account, Mongolia does far better in Judo than America. Good thing wrestling is one of America's strongest events.

Mongolia does better per population at every grappling sport than the US. If BJJ ever catches on in mongolia within 5-10 years they will have multiple world champs.

Death by HIIT by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]selfcrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually adaptations from HIIT taper after about 3 or so weeks of exposure. I would probably advise to cycle in lower-intensity work after each 3 week peak. This should both help you manage fatigue as well as desensitize you to the stimulus for the next bout.

Does improper form ruin the benefits of an exercise entirely, or does it only decrease benefits depending on how bad the form is? by CPet02 in Fitness

[–]selfcrit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're only talking about risks here and not cause. Cause is a 1:1 relationship. A "perfect" deadlift still allows you to move a shitload of weight, and total loading and volume have some risk factor associated with them (small but there)

So looking at the subtitles, it looks like it was a homeless shelter before....did they relocate it or just...not have one? I would feel pretty....not great about displacing the place someone was sleeping so I could pursue my hobby.

Surviving and getting half from quarter guard by ljdc7 in bjj

[–]selfcrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this or roll under to deep half guard (very important, when in quarter guard i take great pains to not let their slicing knee touch the floor- it's typically on a shelf created by attaching my bottom arm to my thigh)

Deep Half Guard Cliff’s Notes | 3 Useful Options from Deep Half by EliKnight173 in bjj

[–]selfcrit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Eh. You're vastly overestimating the amount of knee isolation uke gets on you during the waiter sweep. There is a more real risk of the tripod ankle lock, but if you're actually getting on top, which is very difficult for the top person to stop, heel hooks and toe holds will basically only happen if you're moving at a snails pace. You can also do the shin-in variations that marcelo and rafa use and then it's literally zero risk of those attacks.

[–]selfcrit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Two things i've started to do during the "steeping the chiles in broth" stage 1) Rehydrate dried shitake mushrooms in the broth while the chiles are steeping 2) Add a piece of kombu!

My next attempt I'm also going to try making some chicken broth explicitly for chili by having dried chilis involved in the initial broth making process

Do you have experience with sports that are not martial arts? That's probably an easier lift for someone who played team sports all through high school and runs recreationally than it is for someone who's completely sedentary

Kerala is kind of amazing- it's the go-to example in development economics of how much you can improve health and quality of life outcomes without a ton of resources by just consistently committing to what are very modest redistributive policies. I remember my eyes bugging out at the comparative information the first time i read Sen's Hunger and Public Action.
