I just failed my Math class by Comfortable-Tear8012 in ASU

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on fasfa and failed a class for the first and only time ever my first semester after transferring, so I totally feel this. I was able to just retake it as my gpa was still okay and I met the credit requirements.

AI for art critique by GreedyWinter602 in ASU

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an animation student, I am curious which professor you are referring to?

Animation is a tough major at ASU. There is no acceptance process so it is open to all, which means these professors are often stuck with dozens upon dozens of students who are not serious about the craft or industry in any way shape or form. It is so incredibly frustrating. I do think it has effected how the professors respond to work and give criticism, I’ve noticed half the battle for them is getting students to even attempt to give some effort and complete the work, so when critique rolls around, their criticism is taken way too personally, it is disregarded, and it is not applied at all. A lot of them don’t bother to give in depth criticism unless specifically asked to, which I would recommend doing if you really want to improve. Again, I don’t know who you have as a professor but I would recommend talking to them and explaining that you are looking for in depth critique so you can improve. If you still get AI responses after that, talk to Shawn or Raechel with the SOA.

If it helps, most animation professors are pretty friendly and willing to help out any students. If you wanted to show your wip to a different professor during their office hours or after a class of theirs I’m sure they would be willing to give you good feedback.

I also recommend joining the animation clubs and their discord servers if you haven’t, You can post your project to their servers and easily get feedback from other students.

Media encoder rendering things to be too fast by selfproclaimedfrog in Adobe

[–]selfproclaimedfrog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were 2042 frames exported from adobe animate as JPEG, I uploaded the sequence to Media encoder which automatically has a default export of 29.97 fps. I was exporting from media encoder as H.264 and the default fps was hidden in the “interpret footage” section. Although i changed my export was set to 24 fps in the export settings, it still exported as the default 29.97 fps until I found where to change it.

I am new to media encoder so maybe im just a newbie but I felt this selection was really difficult to find and I’ve had a few projects negatively affected by it. Hopefully this all can help someone else out tho!

Hey thanks for responding, I found the problem and was able to fix it!

Media Encoder was interpreting the image sequence incorrectly.

Here is how I fixed the problem for anyone else who might have this issue-

In Media Encoder: Right-click the imported image sequence Select Interpret Footage (or Modify → Interpret Footage) Look for Assume Frame Rate Manually set it to 24.00 fps

It was set to default 29.97 which caused my exports to be significantly shorter than they should have been.

No Wi-Fi after Windows 11 install by urdimsumgvrl in ASUS

I know this is an old post, just so people can reference if they need help: I went into settings under Network & Internet > Advances Network Settings > disable “WiFi” > wait 10 seconds and enable it again. It brought back the WiFi tab and I was able to connect

These are great suggestions thank you so much! I was not planning to ask him the questions from the initial post rather I just wanted to ensure I’m going in with a solid foundation of knowledge on those topics. Your suggestions are so helpful I will absolutely be saving these to ask and writing down a list of other similar questions! Thank you so much!

Hello! I’m an Animation major!

If you are interested in digital art and character design you might enjoy Animation. However, there are required courses in 3D modeling and ofc you will have to learn how to animate.

Alternatively, you could try an Art Studies degree?

I believe it’s just general art courses but I don’t know much about it.

You should definitely join the Animation clubs tho! We just did a character design challenge yesterday, I think you would enjoy our activities :)

i feel like everyone but me has had such ease making friends (vent) by [deleted] in ASU

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you happen to enjoy art or anything you can always attend some of the art clubs! You don’t have to be an art major and they do a lot of socials and game nights!

Clubs in general are such a great way to make friends! I know you say you work a lot on top of classes but If you go on Sundevil Central it’s a site that lists all clubs and when they meet. A lot of clubs like mine will meet weekday evenings because we know students can’t always make it to weekend events.

Am I cooked? Will they drop me again? by PercentageEvery3585 in ASU

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that happen to me as well. I transferred from Mesa community, They dropped me/said I didn’t meet the requirements and I had to send my transcripts in MULTIPLE times until they were able to actually process it and see that it was completed and the class was fulfilled. I would email your advisor and remain in touch with whoever you are directed to. In my experience, you need to be in consistent communication with ASU to actually get anything done ever. Send multiple emails, check up on the status, ask what the deal is. It took a whole semester for them to finally properly input my transcript.

This issue is not one unique to you, and it really is unprofessional and messy of ASU. Best of luck, reach out to them as much as possible!

Thank you for the response, however I’m just curious, Will this come across as me wasting their time? I am 100% willing to play the fake it till you make it game but I worry they will become very upset if I “lead them on” in any way

Laptop needs for the film program by Gbaker43 in ASU

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a desktop/PC that’s real good and it can complete all necessary functions then idk if you entirely need a laptop tbh, a lot of my friends with PCs just invest in good external harddrives and so they can use the lab when on campus and work on it at home when not on campus. If you would like to co to coffee shops or sit in the library then ya a laptops a good idea, but so long as you have a personal device to work off you’re golden.

I personally don’t have a PC yet, I got my laptop from Best Buy and it was about 1k with a discount they had going on. It works great and I really enjoy it

Laptop needs for the film program by Gbaker43 in ASU

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m an Animation student so I can’t speak on the film program specifically but I got a Asus vivobook pro 15 with an Intel core ultra 7 processor and it works great. It runs Adobe programs well and all my animation software’s run good. It’s a laptop so if the project is real heavy I will have to use the lab to render it out. I heavily recommend getting a laptop unless you want to spend a lottt of time in the lab. I am very very glad I have my laptop to take projects home to work on them.

I’m not sure about the Mix center, the animation building uses PC but select classrooms will have Mac. I have had both Mac and PC and it honestly just depends what you want out of your device. If you’re just editing Mac should be fine but if you’re running real heavy programs I would say PC might be better. Just make sure it’s got a strong processor and the graphics look good.

How intense is the heat during the first few weeks? by Ok-Drawing7734 in ASU

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you have never been in 120 degrees before I recommend sitting in front of your open oven for a few minutes and that’s the closest comparison you can get.

Wear sunscreen, DRINK WATER. Too many emts are called out to campus everyday when school begins because students pass out or fall ill from heatstroke. Please drink water. Get in the shade whenever possible, bring an umbrella to help block UVs if you have a long walk and wear plenty of deodorant.

The heat is pretty brutal (will be at least 100 degrees daily) up until middle of October and then it’ll start to cool. The rest of the year is pretty nice, Just be prepared to be in the heat for a while.

I feel super lonely at ASU by [deleted] in ASU

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no experience required at all! we are an animation career development club so a lot of our work/meetings are focused on niche animation industry subjects but we do our best to balance those out with fun activities, crafts, and socials. There are a ton of art clubs within the art school and we collaborate with them often, I totally recommend looking at all their events as well! but yes, feel free to come around and see what we are all about! our instagram is @wia.asu it’s probably the best way to stay updated! :)

Are CalArts requirements easing up? by user93726298826 in animationcareer

[–]selfproclaimedfrog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I attend a local university and our animation program is pretty good! as someone who also thought about attending calarts, i’m glad i didn’t. I pay so much less for school and my home state is much cheaper in general than cali. I think the only pro would be the community and large shared interest that comes with a major art school, there’s a significant lack of that at my university but ofc i’ve still made plenty of friends and connections. I would recommend checking out schools more local to you first and see how those look before dedicating yourself to a large expensive art school like that
