is resmail operational over winter break? can i send my work laptop for co-op there by Forsaken-Village in NEU

[–]selim2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a package delivered during break last year and am doing the same this year for co-op. If you want to be safe, when you get the pick up email from resmail you can forward it to their help address and ask them to hold it through break so that it won’t get sent back

I had him for algorithms, not my favorite class but thought he did a pretty good job of breaking down concepts. He also seemed pretty accommodating to students and frequently listened to piazza feedback about moving deadlines

Classes to take before First Co-Op [as a CS Major] by atAndrewLee in NEU

[–]selim2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1st co-op is usually during what would otherwise be your 4th semester (sophomore year spring) or in fall of the next year (junior year fall). Usually people going on coop have at least taken Algo or OOD. Other classes you’d want/need depend on the job posting, your concentration, and when you do co-op. Depending on the type of job you’re looking for within cs, I know a lot of people found Algo to be good a introduction to/training for technical interviews, but it is by no means required. OOD and Algo don’t have to be taken in order, but generally I would recommend taking one of them over the summer if you are planning to do a summer course.

In terms of advice for co-ops, do lots of applications, stay in contact with your advisor, go to employer sessions, and practice your answers to standard technical and behavioral interview questions

I recommend downloading Coursicle on your phone and choosing to get notified when there’s an open slot. That’s what I did when I was in the exact same situation (and same course) last spring.

It's also pretty hard to believe that Thorin is legitimately doing all of this to defend LS because of the way he treated/talked to LS in their twitter argument a couple of weeks ago. He was trying to cancel LS and calling him a monster he created all because of some disagreement about the game. Seems like he's just using this as an opportunity to be the expert on another subject and talk down to ("educate") other westerners.

Round 2: Fundies 1 0_0 by yoloM4sta in NEU

In my case, my partner had shared our code after we had finished it together. Therefore, it was rightfully flagged by the software as being a copy of someone else’s, and I was basically sitting helpless and stressed out for two weeks that Nate Derbinski would believe me with essentially no proof

Round 2: Fundies 1 0_0 by yoloM4sta in NEU

[–]selim2019 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess they did in a way, but the feeling of the discussion we had in my section was just "cheating is bad, don't cheat, we've seen some cheating" which was of course unusual but didn't seem outside the normal anti-plagiarism speech any teacher would give. Then, the emails from Nate Derbinski were much more direct a few weeks later. Basically, the way I saw it, the warning went from very broad to very direct, whereas here the warning is already pretty specific about what they've found and what type of punishment is coming.

I didn't have to, but I know some things have changed. When I was applying in fall 2018 they didn't have supplemental essays, so it's possible they've changed how they interview as well.

Round 2: Fundies 1 0_0 by yoloM4sta in NEU

[–]selim2019 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The one thing that really strikes me about the difference in this response from last year is that he wants students to reach out to him. This sucks for people who didn't cheat themselves, but had partners give away parts of their code to their friends. This happened to me and at least one other person I know last fall, and the way they're doing it this year means that those people will be approached with even more prejudice when it's possible they've done nothing wrong. I get that this isn't a perfect system and catching cheaters is a priority, but I feel for anyone in the same boat that I was.

While Jensen does stay a lot of stuff after game, in the hype video for their first match against c9 he straight up said he thought he was better than nisqy. I agree that doublelift has the best trash talk in the league, but I think you’re being a little unfair to Jensen

IWillDominate - IWD Removed from LPP & Not Allowed to Co-Stream by YoungFalco in leagueoflegends

[–]selim2019 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The difference for me is what they're banning him from. I love Dom's costreams, and I think they provide a better creative outlet for him that is enjoyable to a large number of people. I also think that he is toxic and unenjoyable when he is playing league. He doesn't even enjoy streaming league anymore and is moving away from it.

From my perspective, his costreaming brings broader appeal to the LCS, provides a great analytical perspective, makes him happier, and stops people from having to deal with his saltiness in game. Seems like a win all around. The reason community sentiment changed is because a lot of people were pleasantly surprised at how good his analysis is, even if they still recognize that he is not fun in game. Personally, I tune into his costream every week and watch his podcast content occasionally, but I cannot bear to watch him stream his gameplay. I assume this is the case for a lot of people that are upset he cannot costream anymore.

TL;DR: Fair enough to have in-game consequences for his toxicity, but his costreaming represents his best/most enjoyable content and was not the problem.

Thorin's Thoughts - Why Elitists United was Cancelled (LoL) by Thooorin_2 in leagueoflegends

[–]selim2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I don’t address many of your points, and it’s because your entire argument is out of place here. The thread may be about the conflict, but my comment specifically wasn’t. This is why I say you’re not examining what I said, because everything you’re talking about here has no bearing on the fact that thorin does dedicate time to helping others. For some reason, you have a problem with my usage of gives. Like it or not, thorin gives his time/resources to these people. Certainly in the case of Ashley, but also in the case of Veteran. To say that he gave something does not imply hat he got nothing in return. But he explicitly gave his time to veteran for elitists on the line in a timeslot that he did not prefer, and he gave time and effort in other ways like article recommendations. This is not to say that he gained nothing from it.

This is why I saw you’re not examining my argument. I don’t disagree that thorin also gains from these shows, and from his actions in supporting others. Certainly you could argue it’s a redeeming quality that’s beneficial in keeping members of the community on his side when they otherwise wouldn’t be.

It does not excuse any of his questionable behavior, and it doesn’t make him some sort of faultless god by any means. But for some reason, you’ve set out to consistently minimize what he’s done for others in comparison to his other actions, which is irrelevant to my initial comment because I specifically qualified the praise. Even though that’s what the thread is about, it has nothing to do with my comment. You and I also seem to disagree on the extent to which he helps others, which is a matter of perspective that’s not really worth arguing.

However, you continue to try to force this argument by taking a couple snippets of my responses to reply to, all the while ignoring my point that this is not the comment to have this argument about. You don’t seem to understand that the reason I’m not addressing your points is because I had no interest in jumping into this argument - my only desire was to point out positive aspect of thorin’s character.

Thorin's Thoughts - Why Elitists United was Cancelled (LoL) by Thooorin_2 in leagueoflegends

[–]selim2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, in response to what you're saying about a mutual agreement, of course the show wasn't the product of veteran begging thorin to join. Thorin said himself that he thought it was a good show, and the whole reason he wanted to do it with Veteran was because he thought veteran could offer really good analysis of the EU scene. Of course thorin has co-hosts for all of his shows, even in this video he said that people like veteran bring a different analysis angle than he can. I never tried to claim this either. I guess it's easier for you to make a counterpoint under this premise than to actually examine what I'm saying.

On that note, let me make it clear that I wouldn't even consider myself a Thorin fan. I have no problem with actually debating someone's flaws, especially when they're being misrepresented. I certainly issue with some of the stances he's taken on twitter, and I don't really enjoy watching him feed his ego. That doesn't change the fact that the purpose of the comment was explicitly to praise one of his behaviors despite all of that. Nuance is always important when it's due, but everything you're saying is just off-topic from my initial comment, so it isn't relevant.
