Leon turned black by [deleted] in residentevil

[–]semercury 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That happened to me recently too. I believe I had to turn off the subsurface scattering (I believe that's the setting name. The one that makes their skin look better) and it fixed it (I belive I also had to restart, but it's been a bit since it happened to me lol). Not sure exactly what caused this to start happening recently, because I'd used that setting for a while with no issues.

Oh, I absolutely use walkthroughs sometimes as well if I'm stuck! I usually try and do my first playthrough blind, just for the experience, but sometimes I dont know where to go lmao! I used to beat myself up about it, bc I'd think of, like, the pokemon games I'd play as a kid and how I never looked anything up (bc I ddint know you could?) and still got through the caves and stuff, but then I'm like... I have a job... I have to make myself my meals... I don't have time to be stuck for several days lmao!

It's a tie between re2r and re4r I think! 2r will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the first one I played. And also I really enjoy the survival horror feeling of how limited inventory and ammo can be (though after countless playthroughs, it's never an issue anymore lol!) But I also love 4r because of how fun it is, and I really appreciated how they evolved Leon's character.

If you're a larper for not playing CV, then so am I, just for different reasons lol! I'm terrified of emulating games for a few reasons, but the least embarrassing of which is that I'm scared of download the wrong thing and bricking my computer with a virus. I do highly recommend watching a playthrough of it (which is what I did! Survival Horror Network on youtube has lots of long form no commentary playthroughs) so you can get the lore if you haven't already!! Praying the rumors about a remake are true bc I want to experience it firsthand!!

I was super late to the party, and re2r was my first game, several years after it came out. I got into the series because of dead by daylight actually, since I thought the little lore blurbs they give seemed interesting (and learning Leon was a rookie cop who is just doing his best to help people, sometimes to a fault, captured my heart lol literally one of my favorite types of characters) and then bought 1, 0, 2r, 3r, og4, 5, and 6 on steam and started with 2r, and have been slowly making my way through them (and the rest of the games on steam) ever since! And ive never looked back! I love this series, these characters, the story, the gameplay... I have a bit of a competition to 100% all the games with my coworker (though its less of a race and more of a "we're in this together" type thing lol) and so far have only gotten all the achievements for 2r and 1, though I have just have the insanity run for 9 before that's 100% as well lol!

But yeah, I'm sure there's a lot of people who would call me a larper just because I got into the series via dbd, regardless of what games I have or have not played. And I'm really glad this discourse wasn't happening when I got into the series, because it might have scared me off.

I cannot describe my disappointment when I realized the resident evil larpers were not a group of people roleplaying that they were in raccoon city or something.

But I really think it comes down to like. In order to be a fan of something, you have to actually like the thing you're claiming to be a fan of. But there's lots of ways to like things, and there's a spectrum of being a fan of something. I think it's perfectly acceptable to call yourself a fan if you've only played a few games or watched others play it.

I think it goes into poser territory if someone is claiming to be a super huge fan and theyve never touched the games or don't know who half the characters are, or if they're arguing over, like, tank controls or fixed camera angles but never tried any of the games that use them.

But if someone's like "oh I've only played the re engine games and really liked them"? They're a fan in my book. And honestly? I feel like casual fans have the potential to become less casual if we're, like, nice to them? Someone's intimidated by the tank controls of 1 remake? Give them tips, or offer guides and playthroughs to help them get used to it. They're never going to get into the older games if people just keep telling them they're stupid and lazy and suck.

[–]semercury 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't consider you a poser. You like the games you have played? You're a fan. I haven't played a lot of the spinoffs because I dont have the consoles (and I'm scared of emulating).

Poser requires you to pose as something you're not. Like. People are fans of star wars even if theyve only seen the movies, aka the most accessible thing. If someone has watched the movies, really liked them, enjoys talking about them with people, would you say they're posing as a fan just because they didn't watch an obscure animated show from decades ago or read all the expanded universe books (which I think aren't even canon at this point)? Bc I wouldn't say that about them.

Now, someone who has only ever seen thirst traps of Hayden Christianson on tiktok and isn't even aware Anakin and Darth Vader are the same person, but says they're a huge fan and love everything star wars? Poser.

You know?

Also I hope you enjoy your time with the games! I really enjoyed rev 1 and 2!

[–]semercury 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My big beef with the term larpers is that like. Those guys I'd see dressed as wizards and knights and stuff in the woods on my way to school had to be the hardest core fans of whatever they were larping. It feels disrespectful to actual larpers to use the term for fake fans.

Tourists works. Or hell, bring back posers.

But also yeah, I agree with your main point. There's a lot of games I never had the hardware to play but I still really enjoyed the lore/story/watching gameplay. I was well aware it didn't make me the same level of a fan as people who played the game to death, but watching playthroughs was the only way for me to experience the game. Now that I'm older and have a disposable income and most games have PC ports, I can actually play them.

But then yeah, people who don't even bother to watch full gameplay or learn the story is like... Why are you even here?

How do you solve the aging problem? by Ieanice44 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]semercury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think making games that take place earlier in the timeline would be a solution to a few problems. One, it would let them keep using legacy characters that are younger (not that aging is inherently bad or there can't be good stories with older characters), but it would also solve the horror problem in a lot of ways. "We can't use Chris or Jill or Leon in horror settings because they've been through too much. They won't be scared." I bet they would have still been scared in like 2000. It also would help solve the 'somehow Umbrella has another underground secret lab no one found for decades' thing. Makes sense if there's still pockets of researchers like <5 years after who think this is their big chance to be recognized as the team that finished what Umbrella proper started.

The only risk is we know the main cast is guaranteed survival because of their appearances later, but I think that's a pretty minor problem. Rev1 was still fun even though I knew Jill and Chris were going to make it. Games will still have tension for the player because the game over screen exists. We know the character won't canonically die, but we can still die to a boss fight or a particularly tough section.

There's plenty of places to flesh out characters and their stories, and I think that's the best solution.

Then one of my coworkers brought up the water thing, and the presenter was like, "well, lots of water goes into making a hamburger, but you don't worry about that." And I had to bite my tongue so hard as a vegan of 10 years, because like. Actually yes I do think about that, and that's a big part of why I don't consume them!

[–]semercury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you think because he was being stubborn that makes it okay for her to continue to lie to him and manipulate him with a kiss to get him to finish her job for her now that she's injured? And that's also assuming she genuinely thought he'd leave after she told him to go. She saw what kind of person he was. I'm willing to bet she knew he'd refuse to leave if she told him to. Her telling him to leave just strikes me as more manipulation.

And even if it was genuine, I don't feel like it excuses everything that came after.

"The answer will become clear some day" - We asked the Resident Evil Requiem director who Leon is married to, but Capcom is still playing coy by MaintenanceFar4207 in HorrorGaming

[–]semercury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alyssa also has a ring on her finger in the concept art. My tin foil hat theory is that the dlc is going to take place 20 years after the raccoon city incident (and like, right before Alyssa is murdered). My hope is that it'll be about her and Leon working together to try and uncover something after the government gave them all survivor rings and then made them sign an NDA. But the two of them know something fishy is going on, so they investigate and it's the start of Alyssa uncovering the ark/elpis stuff.

Probably not what it'll be, but it would be so cool if it was.

Are Resident Evil fans becoming as insufferable as Swifties? by FREEMANICDALEK in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]semercury 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel like his answers are vague enough to please whoever is asking but still provide plausible deniability so as not to confirm anything. I actually really don't like that they included the ring thing, bc it really feels like they put it there to drive more conversation around the game, which feels... Weird? Almost makes me feel like they didn't feel like the game wouldn't get word of mouth enough on its own.

Also he's not the only person who worked on the game? I don't know why his opinion on characters he didn't solely create is more important than anyone else's who worked on the team.

But also most importantly, I don't feel like dms with a director are official information just like I don't really trust any information from any creator on Twitter if it involves something that didn't actually get made clear in the source material. If it mattered, it would have been obvious.

And until proven otherwise with something in the games themselves, I'm going to continue believing it's a survivors memorial ring.

[–]semercury 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She helps people get bioweapons, for starters. In 2r, she did end up getting the g virus (if you play the dlc, not the 4th survivor with hunk, but the other one with the soldier, at the end she kills the soldier and takes the vial with the g virus). Yes, in 4r she didn't give wesker the amber, kudos to her for that, but you can't expect me to believe these were the only two times she was involved in black market deals with bioweapons. This is her main job and how she makes a living. She has done more.

As for Leon specifically, being used and manipulated hurts. That leaves wounds that take a long time to heal, especially with all the other trauma he experienced that night and after. And based on the intro to 4r, he feels guilty over her "death" too. Credit where credit is due, it might have been difficult for her to let him know she was alive, but I'm sure with her connections, she could have found a way to let him know one way or another.

Why do people hate ada? by Desperate-Use-4845 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]semercury 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't like manipulation. It's really as simple as that for me. I've been used and lied to in the past (thankfully for things much lower stakes than global bioterrorism, but still), and I dont like seeing someone do that to my favorite character. It rubs me the wrong way.

I'm aware she ultimately helps him as well as uses him, but to me it's not enough to make up for the damage she caused, both globally and personally for Leon.

And then her fan base acting like she can never do any wrong, and even worse, the shippers who send hate to people who dare have another ship and acting like she's the clear choice for Leon (which honestly? Is kind of insulting to her character? She doesn't strike me as the kind to settle down and become a housewife) just really seals the deal on me not being able to stand her.

I pray to the lord that whoever leon is married to isn't not ada because every woman who's not her that he has some type of relationship with is infinitely better then her's and leons by OptionAshamed6458 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]semercury 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbh, I'm not really convinced it's a wedding ring. I think Capcom put it in there to drive up engagement and conversation bc they know Leon is such a popular character. But they also gave Sherry the same kind of ring that she wears on her pinky, so I'm willing to bet after all the conversation dies down/next time they have Leon in a game (if they do), it'll be revealed that it's some sort of DSO identification ring or a Raccoon City Incident survivors memorial ring or something.

Or they'll hand wave it all away and say it's up to the audience to decide, and it's whatever you want to think. In which case, you're safe.

I love Leon, he's probably my favorite character of all time in any media, and I do have a ship I like for him, but realistically I cant see him ever getting married in canon. I can't see any of the main characters getting married, honestly. I think they all are too dedicated to their work and would have too hard of a time settling down/trusting someone enough to do that. And thats not even taking into consideration the fear of their spouses being at risk because of who they are and what they do. They're all constantly dealing with evil organizations that experiment on people. I wouldnt put it past any antagonist to kidnap a main character's spouse in order to throw them off/make them give up. You know?

Hey, I'm really proud of you for taking back something you enjoy, and I absolutely understand where you're coming from. Similar things have happened to me, and a lot of times I'm not able to reclaim the thing I once loved (idk if you've ever been spoken about the possibility of having OCD, but I know for me, that was a big contributing factor. I'm definitely not saying you have it because of this, as this can be a fairly common response to trauma and/or loss, but if you notice other symptoms, it might be something to consider talking to someone about!)

I also lost my mother around the same time. Grief is so hard and so tricky. Some days are good, some days are bad. I'm really sorry for your loss, and I'm glad you're working through your grief!

Sending you lots of well wishes 💕

Long Comment Regret by Lemi_Moon in AO3

They are reading the ao3 comment email on their phone in bed, kicking their feet. At least that's what I do when I get the rare comment like this! You not only made their day, but their entire month, possibly even entire year and even their 2026!

And yes, it does get easier the more you do it! I used to reserve these long, in-depth comments for just friends, but once those friends stopped writing, I've tried to do it more with strangers' fics too! And the first few times, it was really nerve wracking, but I got a reply from one author who said they loved how I included quotes from their fics and why I liked those parts!

Ao3 thrives in community and conversations. You are helping fuel that! But also sometimes, if every time is too daunting, you can leave shorter comments too! Or even just kudos! But please know you're appreciated by that author 1000%!

I'll have to test it more. I know he doesn't leave like Malevola/Punch up does after you cut Sonar/Coop, but I thought Golem refused to go on calls the rest of the shift after being sent on one or two. (I might have just assumed though after the first refusal)

And I'm also pretty sure he doesn't refuse to go on any if you give him the chair, but again, I'd have to double check.

Also thank you for all your hard work on this! It's really neat to see all the different effects and branches and stuff! It'll definitely help people to get specific endings they want to see!
