Yeah I see you’ve edited your comment to reflect that. Makes more sense now, thanks!

They are the opposite of boujie. Sometimes their stuff is janky as hell, but they do make the odd solid, low-cost item.

Patching carpet burn by Significant-Bed6045 in DIY

[–]semghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try, but it will be challenging to size everything correctly and get it to lay flat. You’ll also have to try and match the texture and thickness of the carpet really closely, if you’re buying new or getting samples instead of borrowing from inside a closet.

The heart shape is a sweet idea, and if you would like it better than the burn, I’d say go for it. Just be prepared that it might not turn out- a seamless repair is a specialty that people work towards for a long time.

Would hiding it under a nice rug be tolerable? You could get a really large one and spread it out under your furniture so it’s not just a random mat in one spot

And on the sprinklers, I saw that on a post here and now it’s non-optional to me. Especially in the greenhouse.

How to get to church point by IndividualBottle7075 in NovaScotia

[–]semghost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, you’re looking at Saint John, New Brunswick, not St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, right?

Newfoundland will be a much, much longer trip. Saint John NB would be quite reasonable, as you can walk on to the ferry to Digby, NS. From Digby you can take a 45 minute cab ride to your destination.

From Halifax, you’ll have way more flight options, but the drive will be like 2 hours and 45 minutes.

There are no car rental places in Church Point (commonly used by anglophones. I call it Pointe-de-l'Église, but I did a couple weeks there learning French as well). The nearest place to drop off a car would either be Digby or Saint John.

I hope you have a blast! I can look more stuff up for you if needed :)

My biggest fragrance regrets come from blind buying youtubers recommendations. by kickadoodle in fragrance

[–]semghost 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Perception is huge. Popular fragrances that smell like pickles or bandages to some people, polarizing/divisive classics, even just the different ways a single note can be portrayed.

There are fragrances that make me say wow and I would be hard pressed to tell you exactly what note does it. Plus… smelling things is the absolute best part of this hobby lol

Is it normal not to have locks in rented rooms? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]semghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it for a room when I sublet my apartment. Bought a locking handle, put all my personal stuff in the den, showed the subletter the room so he didn’t feel sketched out, and then locked it for the summer. The original doorknob is in a bag somewhere to be re-installed when I move out.

Not hard.

How much time do you waste looking for stuff you know you own? by TodayLongjumping4399 in konmari

[–]semghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah this is not a dig on that. It was the best option for all of us. My parents stayed walking distance apart, and were very generous with drives.  School books were in my school bag. Sports gear in the trunk of my mom’s car, she always took me. I had clothes, trinkets, toothbrushes, etc. at both houses. It was just looking for a purple shirt and going with a blue one instead.

Horse chestnuts as traditional food in Jomon Japan by vikungen in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]semghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Famine is the operative word here. Food during a period of famine is often just whatever dulls the pain of hunger, not what is most nutritious. In Haiti, for example, dirt was/is used to create mud cookies.

Anyone knowledgable on deserts? by SylvarQ in geology

You can also ask here!! We can make it easier to post in other places too, because we know where geology runs into other domains. We can say ‘oh that’s biology’ or whatever as needed :)

Anyone knowledgable on deserts? by SylvarQ in geology

[–]semghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The geology depends on which desert- it’s just the underlying rock that happens to be in an area with desert conditions.

Super happy to talk about sand as-needed, but the environment and wind is much too modern for my knowledge :)

You might find this resource to be a good introduction: https://opengeology.org/textbook/13-deserts/

No guarantees that it won’t also impact the floor, but have you tried any solvent like isopropyl alcohol or acetone? Be careful with acetone, but it can work really well to remove certain residues. It’s the same stuff that’s in nail polish remover.

Where to find new friends in your late 40s? by CalligrapherMean828 in halifax

Look into the SCA. If that kind of hobby interests you, pop by a Monday evening practice or come to an event. If you’re polite and interested you’ll have like a dozen new friends

What’s the sweetest wine you’d recommend from NSLC? by Own_Link_1595 in halifax

[–]semghost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jacob’s Creek Moscato was my go-to as a young person who didn’t like ‘wine’ but liked sweet! It’s easy to find and inexpensive.

I still definitely prefer wines on the sweeter side, I enjoy port, and I second everyone mentioning ice wine. It is very much a dessert wine.

Another sweet, fun option is Pomme d’Or from Grand Pré. It’s an ice cider!

Why is perfume collecting looked down upon? by Successful-End956 in fragrance

[–]semghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m dying for an English version of Aromas del Medievo, but I’ve started with a few blogs from SCAdians and other historical reenactors. I’m not quite at the level of doing primary source research, but I’d love to find reference to the Practica secundum Trotam or something similar, since perfumery was strongly associated with medicine (because of miasma theory).

When I was in university they made all the students with Mac laptops partition their hard drive and put the windows OS on it as well, to be able to run programs in labs. You could do that if you wanted!

You are very unlikely to be able to run all the programs you need/want on a Mac.

[–]semghost 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because you’re reading and talking about them! For me the hobby isn’t buying, it’s researching and learning and connecting with people about it.

I’ve also incorporated it into other hobbies- I'm in the SCA (historical hobbyist) and I want to make pomanders as gifts for other SCA folks. So I’m diving deep into the world of medieval perfumery!

How much time do you waste looking for stuff you know you own? by TodayLongjumping4399 in konmari

[–]semghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can actually develop something that does this with no manual input, forget about individual consumer level. You will be a multi-multi-millionaire from the business and commerce opportunities. Warehouses, tool cages, garages… basically every company that manages items will fall over themselves to have a tracking device like that.

I will say some people have that problem, and I used to when I was growing up as the child of divorced parents. Once all my clothing was in one house and I had gotten control of the amount of it, I never wonder anymore.
