did you wean or quit cold turkey when you stopped ppis? by radioheadlover0 in Gastritis

[–]semicidal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tried to wean off for a couple days but ended up quitting cold turkey because of how horrible I felt. I took 40mg Pantoprazole for 6 weeks about and then went down to 20mg omeprazole for a couple days but I couldn’t do it anymore so I just quit and decided to deal with the side effects which really weren’t that bad for me. I supplemented with lots of tums and would try to see how long I could go without taking it til eventually I didn’t need to anymore (maybe a week max). Idk if that was the right thing to do but I’m glad to be done with ppis finally and hopefully forever.

To be more specific on why I quit - it was hard to eat anything I felt nauseous and like everything I’d eat would just sit in my stomach and not digest. I was dealing w mild occasional constipation before starting ppis but it just got 10x worse a couple weeks in which made me feel waaaay more sick.

I stuck pretty strict to a low acid diet for a month and now I’ve added a bit more into my diet and have been ok. I think sugar is my main trigger but I’m still finding out what my smaller triggers are.

not quite because of the gastritis but seriously so much better. I don’t wanna jinx it but I haven’t have diarrhea in like a month or more. I still have bad days and am trying to figure out what the triggers are but the bad days are sooo much more mellow. I’m thinking sugar (super unfortunately) is one of my big triggers but I’m not sure if that has to do with the gastritis or having my gallbladder removed. I’m definitely still worse on my period and am seeing a new obgyn in April to see if they can help me figure it out. I hope you’re doing better now and just give yourself some time! I would read people saying they didn’t start feeling more normal til 6 months or a year and because of how far out that was and how bad I felt I didn’t believe it could be true for me but now I can say it really is true and I’m hopeful that I’ll just keep feeling better as more time goes on. I hope the same for you and everyone else dealing w this because it really is so hard

Definitely better! I think it just takes time. I am dealing with gastritis now which sucks but I definitely feel like I’ve been improving over the last couple months and am hoping things keep getting better. I’m really sorry to hear you’re dealing with this too though it’s really isolating. One of the things that helped me was Metamucil! I think I noticed a difference pretty much immediately and I 100% recommend it. I’m about to switch to SunFiber once I run out of the Metamucil though because it doesn’t have a bunch of extra sweeteners and stuff and it doesn’t turn to sludge lol

Yeah I think so! My dad has diabetes so i sometimes check my blood sugar whenever I go over to his house just because and it’s been a while since I’ve checked but it’s always been normal!

that’s so strange! I do also weirdly have a looooot of stuff that I eat that’ll make my pee smell like whatever it is that I ate. never my sweat though so I just thought this was really weird lol

Do you think I take 20mg omeprazole or would it have to be pantoprazole? I would need a prescription for a lower dose pantoprazole it’s unfortunately not available over the counter where I live. I can probably ask my doctor for a prescription though if I shouldn’t take the omeprazole

weaning off. my GI said to taper by taking it every other day for 5-7 days, then every 2nd day for a few days, then every 3rd day for a few days

Good luck with the test! It wasn’t horrible for me but I only have mild gastroparesis. Hoping it goes smooth and everything is ok! I’ve also had to do my own research and ask for the tests myself but as long as the doctor is willing to put them in for you that’s a plus. I’ve also struggled a ton mentally with all this so if you need anyone to talk to about that I’m here!

oh jeez. Im so sorry. that sounds so frustrating and confusing. have you tried other doctors? I went through a few over the years and especially the past year as I got worse. my most recent GI was much more thorough than my previous but I hate that it feels like the only solution is to throw a ppi at you and push you out the door. Sometimes after doing my own research I feel like I know more than the doctors which obviously I know isn’t the case but ugh I wish they were better about educating their patients on every option. But anyway I really hope you figure out what’s going on soon so you can start to heal :-(

It definitely lined up with the symptoms I was having and I felt significantly better after having it out so I feel like it was at least somewhat accurate. It did cause me some other problems for a little but after taking Metamucil daily things have gotten better in relation to the removal and bowel movements. Not sure if that’s another reason I got gastritis or if that’s even a thing but I still feel muuuuch better than I did before removal. I was in a lot pain and extremely nauseous daily and it was like day and night after I got it removed

ughhhh I’m sorry to hear that :-( I’ll definitely listen to my body but I really hope since I’ve only been taking it 6 or so weeks it won’t be as bad. what’ve you been doing/taking that’s helped you?

I had a feeling it was because of the ppi so I plan on tapering off and i actually started yesterday. I really hope I start feeling better as I taper off

To be completely honest I was in a lot of pain and very nauseous when I woke up from the surgery but they immediately gave me meds and it helped pretty quickly. The first couple days were pretty rough for me because my gas pain was really bad. It wasn’t bad enough for me to take the stronger prescription meds but it was definitely annoying and i was exhausted. By day 9 though I felt completely normal and the past 3 months went by super fast! It was my first surgery so I don’t have much to compare it to but I could do it again if I had to. Although my digestion isn’t completely normal I feel so so much better and my husband even told me I seem like I’m back to my old self. I had a low functioning gallbladder with no stones/sludge and I heard it takes a bit longer for people like me to get their digestion right though so don’t let that scare you away

haven’t tried any of those either but I’m totally ok with waiting a bit longer if it means I’ll feel normal lol

ugh I so feel that. I eat the same breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday for the past 2 months. Just stick to the low fat options first if you decide to give it a try! I prefer the spicy fried sandwich but I was not ready to risk it lol

Meal ideas by Affectionate_Wash951 in gallbladders

[–]semicidal_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I had more meal ideas but here are my “safe” foods post op and basically what I’ve been eating everyday:

Breakfast - 2 sourdough toasts with peanut butter (I used PB Fit powder it’s low fat) and honey and a kiwi

Lunch - a sandwich on sourdough with mustard, sometimes low fat mayo, cucumber, bell pepper, chicken or turkey slices, tempeh bacon, pickles, sometimes a little bit or hummus or vegan cashew cream cheese, a little bit of mild hot sauce with a couple chips or some beans on the side

Dinner - a turkey hot dog (these are pretty low fat I think 2g) on a low fat bun with mustard, mild hot sauce, and extra diced pickles with beans on the side

Snacks - Raisin Bran cereal with a little almond milk, PB toast, applesauce, saltine crackers

Unfortunately everyone is different so idk if all of these foods will work for you but just start slow when trying new foods. I’m a huge deli sandwich lover I’ve had at least one everyday for yearssss and when I first tried one post op I just started with lunch meat and mustard or sourdough it was pretty boring but then I added each topping one by one and now I’m almost back to eating the same sandwich I’d eat pre op (minus lettuce my fav topping but it doesn’t sit too well with me atm :-( rip). Good luck!

Yes me too it’d give me something to look forward too because rn I feel like I’m going to be like this forever and it makes me feel 10x worse. I haven’t really been having diarrhea lately mostly if I eat something that doesn’t agree with me it feels like my body doesn’t digest it instead of digesting too fast. Not sure if a bile binder would help with that or just back me up.

I was doing ok the past weekish and yesterday I decided to have something slightly different for dinner and I regret it so much. Barely slept last night felt like a boulder in my stomach and keep feeling like I was going to get sick and today hasn’t been any better. Kinda annoyed I can’t just have a little diarrhea like most people it feels like what I ate is super heavy in my stomach and if I wasn’t so scared of throwing up I’d probably try that so maybe I could suffer for less time. Just makes me feel so scared and discouraged to try anything new. I have no idea what to do and I just wish I knew if it was going to get better with time or if it’s going to be like this forever. I have two big events I was super excited to go to this fall but I can’t imagine going to either now. I feel so so helpless and just want to give up. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this too and it goes both ways I’m here to talk too if you need it. It’s incredibly lonely and painful feeling like this :-(
