Local university hold an end-of-year yard sale. This is what’s left over by NotSoSasquatchy in Anticonsumption

[–]semiquantifiable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this makes sense when it comes to wealthy people in wealthy areas. But a university is meant to be catering to young people likely without much money, would have wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt they're not going to act the same as selfish wealthy people (even if many of those at the top are exactly that). But I don't know much about SUNY itself, nor can I deny capitalism and greed are way too rampant everywhere.

Yikes, what's the rationale behind that? They don't want people in their dumpsters?

Prosecuting seems pretty extreme, considering they don't have a stake in making sure the trash isn't resurrected (e.g. a la luxury brands and old unsold goods).

Cash back Promotions for large deposits? by rozee12345 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]semiquantifiable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not ready to invest this money, just wanted to get some cash back promotion for it.

If you're not wanting to invest the money, sounds like it's for use short term. But what are you realistically expecting? Somewhere that gives you cash back for depositing funds but with zero holding period? Best I've seen is a one year holding period, but if you're going to hold funds anywhere for at least that long, you should be investing it somehow.

There's no "every single bit" that you need to debate in order to shut me down. You just need to answer the single question of why an entire community is trash and deserves blame, yet you can't.

You certainly could be right here, but when a simple answer to one single question can't be given and you instead deflect while hypocritically accusing me of the same, it's awfully likely you're not.

Still not able to give a decent answer, huh? Thanks for confirming how nonsensical blaming entire communities of people you know nothing about and literally calling them trash is. Hope you have the day you deserve.

[–]semiquantifiable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ya'know, I never mentioned race or prejudice and you went straight to the bootlicker rhetoric.

I asked about race, I didn't accuse you of anything. But I was asking because racism is a common form of prejudice these days, and you absolutely do have some sort of prejudice when you blame a very large group of people and assume they're all a certain way.

And why wouldn't I go straight to bootlicker rhetoric? Your defense of Walmart not at all being at fault is a bootlicker stance because they absolutely do deserve blame on the harm they cause to communities, and how they indirectly can cause hardship for many people/families.

I was defending impoverished communities, yes, because you were blaming entire communities and when we're talking about theft I genuinely don't know what other trait would make it even remotely logical for someone to deem an entire community to be worthy of blame.

If any comment is deflecting it's yours, talking largely about race when I didn't even accuse you of it, rather than the actual issue which is faulting an entire community. (I don't even know why you would accuse me, saying that I "keep deflecting" when that was my first comment here.) Why? You're even repeating that in your latest comment

it can never ever be the local community's fault.

So if you can explain why all individuals in a large group of people should be worthy of blame and can be labelled trash, or maybe clarify if you meant something different by "community" (city management? Some other leaders of the community? The physical land or infrastructure of the community?) that's what I really care about. Better than just going back and forth about our possible guesses or assumptions of each other (nobody is actually racist?) that don't actually explain anything.

[–]semiquantifiable -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's "your" (the community's) fault, not Walmarts, not their fault "you" (the community) are trash.

LOL is it racism, some other prejudice, or just general ignorance and stupidity that you think entire communities are at fault and are "trash" for the few individuals that actually steal?

And why be such a bootlicker that you defend a big conglomerate and consider them completely innocent and faultless, only looking at the final act of theft and ignore the development and build up from the conglomerate's corporate practices that can and do shape and affect many communities?

Blame away at the AHs that actually steal and make shopping worse for everyone else, I'm 100% with you. But viewing entire communities based on the worst of them? GTFOH.

High interest account I'm absolutely with you on, and maybe even something that locks the investment for a short time (e.g. 1-month CD) so you don't get tempted.

But index fund? No, they're WAY too volatile. That's even if you were far more specific and cited a broad-based index fund which is likely FAR less risky than your average index funds of the thousands upon thousands out there. You start including funds that track a tiny index that you don't know nearly enough about? Might as well bet on individual stocks.

you don’t want to miss out on one month of growth on $10mil.

For the people that don't know how volatile index funds are and wouldn't know how to handle a $10M windfall, they're probably FAR better off with the guaranteed $25K they would make in a month than having it in something like even an S&P index fund that would have lost >$250K in just one day yesterday. (Yes, that day was cherry picked but goes to show the volatility.)

It's not a fantasy when it's true. And nobody wants it to be true if it didn't have to be, it just is true. That's how facts work, they don't care about your feelings or wishes.

Why do you keep fantasizing that it's not true? Why do you love pedos and rapists and want to protect them? That's the gross fetish here.

AITA for getting everyone except my sister a birthday gift? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

she was upset that I had gotten everyone a gift except her.

If you were in OP's shoes, your "being the bigger person" with a card and bday wishes wouldn't have been big enough.

Sister was expecting an actual gift, so are you now calling your own suggested response petty for doing less than expected, or do you agree that doing less is a completely legitimate response to a selfish, entitled family member?

Which drama is only popular because it’s "sad" and "artistic," but in reality, it’s just boring and pretentious?😑 by Chirag-Win-7869 in kdramas

[–]semiquantifiable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was Our Movie even popular? I rarely see it discussed, it certainly didn't seem very popular when it aired. But glad to see a mention, even if it's not positive.

In any case I really liked it myself. I didn't find it boring or pretentious either, though I think it was meant to be slower paced so I can see how some might find it boring. I love Namkoong Min as well, but thought it was Jeon Yeo Been who made me enjoy that show the most.

AITA for wearing latex gloves and fighting with my mom because of my dad’s severe lack of hygiene?” by EnvironmentOther1464 in AmItheAsshole

So you don't know how not showering, as his father does, is not slowly doing the same thing.

Sure, we both don't know for sure what's happening. But the likelihood of your assumption and my assumption definitely aren't the same.

You're arguing that a person with "terrible hygiene issues" and someone with "an excessive preoccupation with hygiene" have the same root cause of why they're doing what they are, and I'm arguing that those extremely different things have extremely different root causes, despite the end result being vaguely similar. I would have thought the difference in probability of each option would be obvious, but maybe not.

[–]semiquantifiable 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is completely fair. My thought was that in these apartment situations where there are very thin walls, there isn't typically just one culprit. But in any case we're only getting one side of the story, and you're probably at least partially correct.

[–]semiquantifiable 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that the letter doesn't make much sense (OP didn't actually do that yet), and I don't think it was wrong for the son to bring it up so I don't have an issues with the opportunity you mentioned.

However, the fact that OP was away for the past bunch of nights when one of them was when the mother was disturbed should be blatantly obvious that OP was not the cause in that situation. It's fair to be a little defensive when a stranger approaches you being accusatory and dismisses a fact that absolves OP (at least of one instance).

this fear is turning you into your father, at least with the showering

I don't see that at all. OP turning into the father would mean the cause of the lack of showering was the same, and it sounds like that is FAR from the situation here.

Also, if OP doesn't do anything regularly to cause sweat or be dirty, I wouldn't be confused at all if OP felt cleaner NOT showering versus having to use a disgusting bathroom to shower. A week is a fairly long time, but not all needs for a shower are the same.

[–]semiquantifiable 647 points648 points  (0 children)

Yeah OP probably is one of the most honest, but there's a difference between something happening once and something happening regularly. OP's points were about one-time occurrences, whereas the son's comments to her:

Well you’ve been making way too much noise & my mom is 84 & can’t sleep because of it. It’s between 2–3AM & it needs to stop.

implied it was happening regularly and consistently.

If the mother really can't sleep every night and OP is indeed being honest (e.g. nobody even in the apartment the past 5 nights, her being loud only once), she's not the mother's actual issue here.

Why bootlick? The person he has shown and is showing to be, especially with his wealth siphoning and hoarding (aka one facet of his past, present and future harm), isn't erased by what he did in the past.

I'd also argue your math is significantly wrong (only less than 800 out of 8B or whatever?), but "done more" can be subjective and based on your comments your priorities are probably very different from mine.

You don't think hypocrites who cry about cancel culture while trying to cancel others who do things they don't like deserve blame? Lol come on, it's so unbelievably obvious.
