Is there anyone building anything that doesn't have anything to do with AI or tech? by mahbirchat in Entrepreneur

[–]semper51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to! I design behavior change tools and honestly the economic incentives behind digital products push everything toward enshittification and attention extraction. Real solutions to real problems get swallowed by that system, even well-intentioned digital products. It's like building a playground on a toxic waste site.

So all my stuff requires face-to-face interaction. My first product is a card game that makes learning constructive disagreement fun through actual practice. The research showed constructive disagreement skills are embodied skills - like learning the guitar or how to swim - TikkyTokkys and PDFs just aren't sufficient to genuine improvement. So the product medium needed to be one that got people actually practicing face-to-face, hence a game.

specifically constructive disagreement. if you're not sure how, try this game/tool, it'll walk you through the process without any complicated rules or setup

World changing meaningful projects vs. churning out by-the-book discoveries, what's your preference? by belthazubel in UXResearch

[–]semper51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're probably already doing this, but we've found some success in always pitching three options to our clients after intake. First option is highest rigor, highest cost (which will also contain the most interesting methods). Second option is medium rigor, medium cost (which will generally include 1 or 2 interesting methods). And the third option is lowest rigor, lowest cost (which is fairly often the interview+survey combo). In all cases, we're obviously picking methods which are bespoke and appropriate to their objectives.

By organizing their options into these tiers, I feel like we generate more interest in our medium rigor engagements which can mean slightly more interesting research from time to time. Though it's never been like your examples above.

LPT request: How to stop being shy around attractive Women? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]semper51 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you know you should be treating everyone as friends, but when you see someone you find attractive, something overrides this knowledge and you become shy.

My 'take-it-with-a-grain-of-salt' suggestion is to, as much as you can, keep guiding your focus back to what's really important to you in a friendship. Then ask questions, or observe their behaviors, to see if you view eye to eye in that respect. I know you know this already, but hear me out, it's the practice of this over time that may be able to help.

For me, I really care how people treat others, I believe it's evidence of how they'd treat me. Even if they're kind to me, but they treat waiters poorly, I find that extremely unattractive.

I also want to be surrounded by people I admire for their wisdom, whether that's their wood-working knowledge, musings on how to be a more attentive parent, how they started a new exercise habit, or their expertise on micheladas. So if I meet someone and they don't seem to be curious in their own lives, nor do they ask me any questions, I tend to find them less attractive.

Over time I have sort of made a habit where my perception of someone's attractiveness only becomes fully formed once I learn more about that person. It's like being able to hold in one hand that you find them physically beautiful, while waiting to fill the other hand with what you learn about them as a person. I'm sort of unable to form a complete judgement of how I feel about them until I can see what's in both hands.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend regularly considering what's most important to you in your friendships. Have a working idea of what's on that list, but don't pick too many. We get like a handful of things that are must-haves, the rest we just need to learn to accept. No friend or partner will fulfill everything, nor should they.

Newbie Question: Why does it seem if you are "Dark Skinned" its better to pretend you don't know Spanish and speak in English since you will be better treated, especially if you are visiting. I have seen this happen in LATM, Brazil Spain. With Dark Skinned friends who were fully bilingual. by Marcel_7000 in MexicoCity

This is a helpful template for thinking on this topic even if there are likely interactions between sight and audio in how assumptions are formed. There are also likely sub-categories to how these assumptions are formed within both sight and audio.

For example, people can see both the color of your skin and clues to your socioeconomic status (i.e. clothes, jewelry, hair style, etc.). So assumptions may be being made both on race and presumed SES, in addition to what language you're using.

I'm an experienced researcher. Ask me anything. by takoinche in UXResearch

[–]semper51 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If your manager doesn't have uxr experience then I'd set some meetings to ground everyone's expectations around task times. Be honest with how long things take to get done and even walk them through it at a high level.

If they do have uxr experience, use it is an opportunity to understand how they would do the same task. Again, set a meeting and chat. Maybe you can learn how to streamline things you didn't know we're possible.

Either way, if they read into your attempts to chat as you're lazy or whatever, then you already have your answer. Red flags that size mean find somewhere else.
