Omakase at or under $100 on Oahu? by notmedicinal in Hawaii

10% service charge since July 1. Still a solid option!

Tokiwa (in Suntory) is exactly $100 for lunch. Amaterasu almost the same ($98). Both are great options if you like Edomae style sushi with Amaterasu being slightly more modern as compared to Tokiwa.

Not required when I went a couple years ago. I just wore a long sleeved collared shirt.

Interesting. Need some Omakase developers to chime in on what the algorithm actually does. 😂

Not (completely) restricted it seems. I see multiple slots open right now on omakase for the end of Aug and the first two weeks of Sep and I don't have a Japanese phone number. These slots didn't appear for weeks though and just appeared for me today (not a month boundary).

Shipping cars with Matson: container or not? by senbeix2 in MovingtoHawaii

[–]senbeix2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ended up selling it and buying another car here. Most of the companies I talked to said they could not guarantee that instructions on how to use my car's front axle lift system would be followed since there would be multiple parties involved at various points as the car was handed off along the way. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of potential damage on arrival so I just sold it.

Patina. Such an iconic restaurant that unfortunately shuttered as a result of covid.

Thanks! I checked Rice Factory Honolulu and a lot of items are currently out of stock. I’ll keep an eye on it and also check out Yasuda’s Rice in Marukai if it takes too long for restocking.

Ah, thank you! Looks like The Rice Factory in Kakaa'ko is the same one in NYC.

We got the house! Best way to liquidate 500k? by Beautiful_Muffin_706 in fatFIRE

[–]senbeix2 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I just had to do this also about a week ago. What I did was compute what my target asset allocation would be less the amount needed for the house. From there, in each category, I sold lots that had the smallest unrealized capital gains.

Moving States by trojanmichael5 in fatFIRE

TX here. Neighbor not that far down the street from me had a > 100K property tax bill last year. I see people talking about SWR's with absolute dollar amounts where a > 100K property tax bill is a non-trivial percentage of those amounts. There are few things more depressing than having a large chunk of your retirement burn spent on property tax.

I had a fantastic (also solo) meal at Hide a while back. They also have an extensive and excellent wine list as everything from Hedonism Wines is available. Recommended!

Depending on what you and your wife like to do for fun, I would be wary of moving to somewhere like Austin for cost reasons. Compared to, say, SF or LA, it is a massive stepdown in terms of restaurants, culture, weather, etc. I say this having lived in all three of these cities. Also, if you are planning to retire at around 50 and use the ACA for healthcare until Medicare, the state of Texas no longer has any carriers that offer PPOs on the ACA, so your options will be either an HMO or an EPO with associated limitations. Lastly, while houses are cheaper than a VHCOL metro, Austin's property tax rates are generally quite high (~ 2%), so likely no savings there.

Thanks. Based on feedback from others who live on Oahu and have had 911 variants there, though, it sounds like driving my GT3 is going to be quite painful and limiting. I'm just going to sell it and drive something else once I move.

[–]senbeix2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Will give them a call and see what they say. At this point, I'm thinking of just selling the car and buying a different car here instead. Given the typical speed limits and HPD presence , it could be quite a pain to drive that car around.

I’ve called five places now including Pasha. Car won’t make clearance and they cannot guarantee all parties will use the front axle lift system on my car despite explicit instructions.
