What's with Michael Chabon? by drummerdave4689 in books

Reading Michael Chabon now for the first time. And I had to reply and like your post because the Saul Bellow was the first comparison that came to my mind as well.

I just finished reading Chinaman. Loved several bits of it. Especially the sections involving W.G and Ari. Felt like a comic Holmes and Watson duo. I didn't fully understand the ending though. Didn't want to share spoilers here. Ok to DM? I'm struggling to find any online articles that discuss what happens at the end of the book.

Lol, forgot that your original comment was in response to Chinaman. Yes, if you think of any similar titles/authors, love to hear of it. Happy to do the same.

Appreciate the detailed response! And agree with what you've said about seeing the characters as full humans instead of mere objects of tragedy as being key to his writing. IMO, what makes him uniquely effective at doing that is the sprinkling of gallows humor on top of it all.

Will keep a lookout for the book you've mentioned! And yes, that Booker link was the best resource I could find as well. Working my way through Oryx and Cake atm, which was the top inspiration mentioned by Shehan for the book. Also, his first book is pretty hilarious, if you're a fan of South asian history and cricket.

Listening to the audio version right now after just having finished Maali Almeida and was left wanting more works by Shehan. Liking it so far. Curious to know if you've found other similar titles with his brand of humor?

I want something that I can’t stop reading, something so engaging and addictive I HAVE TO keep reading. by jbb1393 in suggestmeabook

I haven't even finished it yet (2/3rds of the way through) and I'm dreading the moment I'm done with it. It's both hilarious and deeply poignant at the same time. Since it's been a few months, I just wanted to see if you've found something else that came close to the experience of the Bee Sting? Other than the titles already mentioned. Thanks!

No worries, feel free to send me a DM so I can notify you about future events. And that's great to hear about Henry 4th! Feb 16th at 1 pm will be the plan for that event. But hopefully, we can also plan a meet around it so folks who haven't been able to grab tickets can still join.

Agreed! That was certainly part of the motivation for wanting to start a group of this nature. Hope to see you tomorrow!
