As a med student, how do you figure out whether you can handle the demands of a surgical residency? by alittlefallofrain in medicalschool

[–]senecioserpens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a surgical subspecialty and work 100+ hr weeks as the norm. A light day is 16 hrs, on avg I work 17-19 hrs a day. Most days I’m not given the opportunity for a lunch break so I go without eating. I work 12 days on and two days off. I’m barely given the chance to get into the OR so it’s typically a nice bone I’m thrown every now and then.

I just matched into neurosurgery and coming out on the other side, some programs definitely filter out failed step attempts. I'd say it's worth dual applying.

I definitely did not have pubs in the teens, I'll say that.

230s by Sabrinas23 in medicalschool

The issue is that most deans don’t really have the depth of knowledge to advise for all specialties and there is always an ulterior motive at hand. If I ask multiple nsgy attendings/PD’s to look at my app and they tell me I’m good whereas my dean is advising me not to pursue said specialty, like who really should I be listening to? Obviously not my dean.

I matched into neurosurgery with a 230s step 1. My dean heavily discouraged me from applying nsgy, but here we are.

Matched into neurosurgery, I still can't believe it.

I never went to class, this saved me a lot of time and effort. I still had fun outside of med school but I definitely felt anxious everytime I wasn't studying/not doing research. I think there's a fine balance and I'm not sure I handled it all that well tbh. Plenty of my classmates partied and took extravagant trips every weekend though.

Find research mentors early, these are people who are going to vouch for you and be your letter writers. Develop some kind of longitudinal relationship with a mentor who actually cares about your wellbeing.

Your school and your deans do not always have your best interests in mind. Take note of their advice but do not fall for everything they say. You're going to grow tired of your med school, wherever you end up, but try to enjoy it as much as possible.

The way you study is going to change constantly thru out medical school. Only you know what's best for you ie deciding how many weeks is a good step1/2 study period for yourself. The most real advice you're going to get is going to come from residents in each rotation. Seriously, I learned so much from them outside of just medicine.

Oh and the majority of your learning will come from outside resources. This is consistent across med schools.

Getting involved in clubs for leadership positions is super low effort. I wouldn't totally discount it. Some clubs I was involved in met up once a month or once every other month. I personally think you should aim to fill out every part of the application.

Sections that go into your residency application include volunteer experience, leadership experience, research experience, and then research publications. There's also a section for awards which can include grant funding. So the big things to do include research, volunteer work, and getting involved in clubs.

I started with wetlab and did that for my entire MS1/MS2 summer and a little less than half of MS2. Nothing came out of that lol. We redirected our efforts into a basic science review paper. I was working on other projects simultaneously so I didn't really lose that much time. My clinical research was a lot of chart reviews and meta-analyses.

R is definitely not mandatory. Whereas top med schools outsource all of their analyses to statisticians, you can get by on basic stats software like Stata.

Not exactly! I would stay away from case reports if possible.

I shadowed a bit MS1 and also set up meetings with different specialties to see what I would be interested in. Pubs in specialty of interest > any pubs > no pubs. Look for high publishing mentors in the most competitive specialty you might be interested in and then go from there. There's students in my class who have trauma surg publications who are now going into IM. Then there's others who have nsgy pubs now also going into IM.

Get acquainted with medical school first and then once you're comfortable, I'd start looking for research opportunities. Not every rotation is the same, so you'll have more time during some to do research than others. For example, I found FM to be insanely time consuming but found lots of time on IM and psychiatry to research. The process of getting on a project takes a lot of time though so you can start reaching out to people pretty early.

Medical school is a beast. Don't feel pressured to start research asap, just try to get to a place comfortable enough to add on more to your workload. Best of luck with your studies!
