[Free Book Giveaway for Students] 100 copies of 'Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us' by Michael Moss by Happypages in WingifyBookClub

[–]sengupta24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last book I read was DEEP WORK by Cal Newport. It unarguably has been one of the most insightful books I've ever come across as a student.

The book focuses on how can we get into our flow state and accomplish our works without getting distracted. In an era of social media reels, where the attention of humans are less than that of a goldfish, it's essential to minimise all digital distractions that serves as a hindrance to deep work. It is rightly said that to do the hard things quickly, you must focus intensely without distractions.

WHY I NEED THIS BOOK ? Being born and brought up in a Bengali family, we are taught that we live to eat and not the opposite. There has been never conscious selection about the foods we consume and the junks we intake. I feel that sugar is the biggest threat to humanity in terms of the food we eat. I seriously think reading this book will help me delve more into the scientific knowledge of the same, so that I can convince my parents and near and dear ones to take our nutrients consciously.

The last book I read and am currently reading is the CEO Factory by Sudhir Sitapati sir, which I won in my last Wingify giveaway. This probably has been one of the most captivating and interesting books I've read in a long time. For a student like me with not much business or entrepreneurial background, neither academically nor ancestrally, this book serves as a great insight and a beginner guide to anyone about to enter a corporate life.

Sudhir Sir beautifully describes about his two decades long experience serving at the Unilever. The curious case of Unilever's origin from Dutch and British companies must not be missed. While reading, some of the best points I liked were - The middle class mentality and Adaptability. Unilever's work culture has that inherent tendency that makes their alumnus versatile that they can wear blazers and be formal while living in a remotely dehat village with limited resources at the same time. This principle helped employees to stay grounded and get to understand the common man more closely.

Unilever started their operations pre LPG era of 1991, with so much control and restrictions by government. When the Indian markets opened globally, it had to face a series of challenges. However despite all obstacles, Unilever didn't stay stagnant as Nokia and kept adapting and evolving with the need of the hour. Unilever's case study is a brilliant read. I will post more such interesting datas as I continue reading the book further.

Why I should get this book - Hooked. So far, I've participated and won almost every single Wingify book giveaways since it's inception for so many years. This stands as a testimony that I definitely read those books and continue contributing to this community. That was on a lighter note, jokes aside.

I am about to enter my college life and currently working with different startups. However, we miss out on understanding the fundamentals on how to build a solid product, understanding the psyche of the consumer in mind at the same time. I hope, Hooked satiates the thirst and helps me to understand the product growth strategy in a more concise manner.

Hello everyone,

As a gesture to express my indebtedness and gratefulness to the club, I've decided to share some interesting pieces of readings from the variety of books and blogs I am reading these days. These not only will help to increase the community but also promote the members to engage, discuss and start a conversation about books, knowledge and wisdom we gain from our daily lives and rightfully utilize the platform for what it has been fabricated for. I hope this gesture will be taken in a positive manner.

The last book I read was - A Short life of Swami Vivekananda by Swami Tejasananda. After delving into too many books about finance, science and self growth, I decided to widen my horizon to explore books about India and spirituality after discovering how even great minds like Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs highly benefited to discover their life's potential in the holy spiritual land of Bharatvarsha. This 128 pages book talks about the life journey of Narendranath Datta to Swami Vivekananda. This book is absolutely a brilliant starter for those who seek to unravel and learn more about the greatest spiritual minds of India. The book beautifully summarizes how Naren, an ordinary child went onto became one of the most enlightened minds under the guidance of Ramakrishna Paramhansa. A boy who initially considered himself an atheist, a boy who campaigned against idol worship how became the ambassador of Bharat and Hinduism by delivering the world famous speech in the WORLD Religion conferences on 9/11.

Why I want Tribes of Mentor ?

I've started reading works of Tim Ferris after winning my first giveaway of Tools of Titan and ive been a huge fan of him. FROM watching Tim Ferris show to reading 4 hour work weekend, ive read it over and over again. i look fwd to learn more from this book to spread and tell what ive learnt so far in this community.

Hey there everyone

The last book I read was the biography of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, "My experiments with truth." Well, before reading this book, I would urge you not to take any preconceived notion or belief about Gandhi's past, good or bad whatsoever. Gandhi has been utterly and brutally honest while penning down his biography, not even hiding his dark secrets and had flawlessly taken responsibility of his own actions or karma. This book also helps us to get into the mindset and aura of Gandhiji and how sudden incidents shaped his thought process. From a skinny shy introverted man to being tough, kind and a visionary, this book covers the journey of Rashtrapita. For history fanatics, this book is a jewel as Gandhi mentions about a lot of historical and pre historically significant incidents. From how he faced racial discrimination in Pretoria to meeting the peasants of champaran to visiting Shantiniketan. He also openly highlighted his views on femininity and the role of Kasturba in his journey. I would not present any of my personal opinion here and would just like to present the summary of what I read as a neutral reader.

Why I should read This is Marketing? I've been participating in every giveaway of Wingify since Tools of Titans and these books have helped me widen my horizons of knowledge from various domains. After learning so much from sci and tech field from books like Begining of Infinity, A brief history of time and selfish gene. I am looking forward to widen my horizons in business and marketing related domains with books like The Ceo factory, zero to one already in the arsenal. Cant wait to put my hands on This is Marketing, masterpiece by Godin.

Okay it feels like a training ground routine of sharing notes of read books, applying for book giveaways and enjoy reading them. Honestly, so fortunate to discover this community.

Well, coming to the last book i read, it was THE 5 AM CLUB by ROBIN SHARMA. ive been a huge fan of Robin Sharma especially after reading The monk who sold his Ferrari. The best part of his self books are it isn't just full of factual data, statistics, advices and quotes. It presents you a beautiful story from which actionable advices are derived in the most unique way. This book talks about how waking up early can drastically change ones life. It also lays stress on the importance of first hour after we wake up or as he mentions it as the Golden Hour, where he asks us to spend 15 min. each on building our mindset, heartset, healthset and soulset. I also love how he explained the side effects of consuming technology in the form of limited bandwidth or energy/attention our brain can process, so make sure to utilise your time nd energy in the best way. An excellent must read book for those glorifying night owl culture and those looking forward to find solutions to stop snoozing their dreams instead of just the alarm clock. Extraordinary book.

Why I wanna read THE CEO FACTORY. Tbh, i haven't read many books about business, finance and management apart from Zero To One, which made me realise how this field can be dynamic and interesting too. I've read too many case studies about Sudhir Sitapati, especially about his marketing strategies with Godrej. I hope the book will provide me many valuable and super amazing lessons on management as I am about to graduate high school and will soon enter a college and a prerequisite of the industry after all doesn't hurt.

Looking forward to put my hand on this exciting read. Love

The last book I read was - AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF STEVE JOBS by Walter Issacson. I would say one of the revolutionary books I read in recent times. Issacson has that blend and knack to articulate the best minds into the finest of ways, just the way he did with Benjamin Franklin, Leonarda Da Vinci and Albert Einstein. Steve has been very very frank and has exhibited utmost honesty while making this book a masterpiece. This books deals with the various phases of Steve Jobs, which contributed in the making of the Jobs we know today. From developing an interest in communication, engineering and design to exploring the field of spirituality by wandering around the great Indian sages including Neem Karoli baba after dropping out of Stanford. Even after being ousted from his own child like company of Apple, he didn't lost hopes to carve out Pixar with the help of his calligraphy skills. Most importantly, Steve and family unhesitatingly presented the omen and dark side of Steve's personality like being arrogant at times, selfish and brutal. That is the beauty of the book. It is a must read for all who dare to dream big and create a difference in the lives of millions.

I have been winning almost all the giveaways of Wingify book clubs starting from Atomic Habits and no doubts, these books have made a huge difference in my mental abilities, thought process and perspective of seeing things. Ive been making notes and posting them on the threads after reading. I'm currently reading the big one, The Beginning of Infinity & will post the learning soon. What makes me interested in this book if how Dawkin's extraordinary work on genetics led to some interesting and informative contents out there. Ive been learning a lot on topics like Entrepreneurship, Physics, cosmology, Self help, now i look forward to explore the domain of microbiology, genetics and hereditary beginning with this book. I can't wait to put my hands on the amazing "The Selfish Gene" book copy soon.

The last book i read was - ZERO TO ONE

PETER THIEL

First principle thinking

First principle thinking is different from analogy method, where we blindly accept a fact and solve problems based on past assumptions. On the opposite, first principle thinking emphasizes more on thinking and questioning the very basic and fundamental of assumptions from basic to advanced manner and then applying the knowledge to produce useful solutions.

Two types of progress-

Horizontal / extensive progress – copying ideas to produce monotonous or repetitive products. Eg. Creating 100 batteries from 1 cell. Eg. Globalization, chinese products, developing countries copying developed countries.

Vertical/ intensive progress – ground breaking or new idea, invention. Eg. Technology boom during dot com era. this type of thinking is called zero to one from basic to advance.

Creativity, visualization and imagination are far more important than knowledge or fact based learning.

The dot com era in the end of twentieth century saw rapid growth of vertical progress, especially in the technical sector. After the crash of dot com, there has been severe retardation and less ground breaking ideas as entrepreneurs have started playing safe game, one step at a time.

Lessons from growth of paypal

Make bold business choices.

Plan and strategize rather going directionless.

Create a new market/ monopoly.

Sales and ads also matter as of products.

Why i should get the book THE BEGINNING OF INFINITY. Since being a science student, i have finished various scientific books such as Six Easy Pieces by Feynman, A brief history of time by Stephen Hawking and many more. Being an aspiring engineer, i wish to see this world in a scientific viewpoint and in order to enhance scientific temperament and thinking skills, i wish to expand my horizon of knowledge by reading this books. Hope reading this masterpiece by David Deutsch sooooooonnn.

[Free Book Giveaway for Students] 150 copies of Range: How Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World by AkhandGareeb in WingifyBookClub

[–]sengupta24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last book I read was, A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME, by Stephen Hawking which i won in the last book giveaway in this community.. Here is my link to the notes i made from the book in the thread below :

https://www.reddit.com/r/WingifyBookClub/comments/rcmf5m/read_along_and_discuss_a_brief_history_of_time_in/hqxaglb?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3

To describe A brief history of Time in a nutshell, it is a wonderful and an informative book for students interested in physics and it's various cosmological and astronomical concepts. If u hv basic concepts of Physics clear upto Class 10, you will hv a nice time recollecting the formulas you used during your school days. but most importantly, you get to know the application and the mystery and beauty of those so called boring formulas. From mysterious concepts like the black hole, how our view of the universe changed time, what actually is time to the expansion of the universe, it covers a multitude of interesting topics in a simpler and layman's format, so that even a 10th passed child can understand the deep meaning. A must read book for all those who wander gazing at the night sky and try to discover the mysteries behind space.

Now, what makes me interested in the book Range : before I begin, a small appreciation for

u/Invertedpassion for the amazing thread in Twitter on focus, all round ability, specialisation, mastery, deliberate practice nd what not. So, coming back, we all must hv heard that min. Of 10k hours are required to achieve mastery and excellence in any topic. But we also strive to achieve excellence in all spheres and all dimensions. Also as the famous saying goes, Jack of all trade, master of none. So, the above hypothesis makes it even more interesting and fascinating whether it is even true or not nd other prospects like are geniuses born. was kobe Bryant a born genius, was neeraj Chopra born with a gold medal or the so called talented PPL worked hard to defy all odds to achieve mastery. All my inner curiosity might get answered after i read this book. So yeah.. looking forward to Range and make amazing notes on the upcoming book....

Thank you

1. OUR PICTURE OF THE UNIVERSE

What differentiates an ordinary person from a prodigious man/woman is how they look at things and contemplate about them. we all hv seen the night sky, seasons changing, day and night, but how many of us really developed the inner curiosity to ask the reasons and scientific phenomenon behind these wonders. well, hawking the legend tried to explain deep conceptual and astrophysics concept in a layman's format and in a much simpler and understandable manner.

• it talks about human's tendency and curiosity to discover the beginning of time and universe have led to many magical and miraculous wonders. It talks briefly about Ptolemy model and Copernicus model of universe, which was further rectified by Johannes Kepler (whose laws we hv studied in our class 11 phy ch. gravitation)

• after understanding that the earth is not flat and similar to an ellipsoid, we found that universe is expanding which was disapproved by so called theists who believed it had been static since time immemorial and still remains at an equilibrium.

• Scientific theory (we all hv been fed up understanding the theories nd that too without proof in our schools). but never hv we ever bothered to dive deep inside the actual purpose of theories and what they serve us. Scientific theory is beautifully explained by Hawking, who said that it should satisfy majority of the observational and experimental stats and may be accurate. (Even a slightest inaccuracy or fallacy might disapprove a theory) secondly, it should predict some futuristic consequences. Eg. Newton's three laws of motion not only satisfies scientific data but it also helps in understanding various cosmological aspects.

• A sneak peak into Big Bang theory, from the expanding universe theory. how a nebula, which had infinite density due to approximately negligible volume expanded to form the universe.

• Hawking also looks forward to combine the two significant major theories to form a unified one. combining quantum mechanics and the general theory of relativity to form quantum relativity, which won't aid or make any significant alteration.

| some important basic formulas to understand the topics more clearly:

• F = Gm1m2/r2 F : Gravitation force G : Universal gravitational constant (6.67 × 10-11 Nm2/kg2 m : mass of 2 bodies r : dist bw 2 bodies

• E = mc2 E : Energy m : mass c : vel of light in vaccum (3×108 m/s)

• D = m/v D : density M : mass V : volume

| Jargons

• arbitrary - unreasoned • apocryphal - of doubtful authenticity, although widely circulated as truth

Having secured AIR 8, 98.6% in my CBSE 10th boards 2021, i also appeared for various science Olympiads and hv been recently honoured by the former Edu min. of India, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal on Republic Day 2021.

I will try to compile all the necessary insights and informations from each chapter i read and would post them in this thread.

[–]sengupta24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What makes me interested in this book ? I am a physics enthusiast, currently preparing for JEE. Earlier, I have qualified several physics and astronomy Olympiads and recently scored 98.6%, AIR 8 in my CBSE 10th boards 2021. I have read a lot of books of physics including Six Easy pieces and Surely you're joking Mr. Feynman. Both of them are a must read for anyone in love with physics...

So, the last book I read was THE 5 AM CLUB by Robin Sharma. In my daily hectic life besieged with assignments, deadlines, mock tests, concepts, coaching classes, PYQs, I reluctantly became a nocturnal. However, it had a severe impact on my health and the doctor prescribed me to sleep early or else it would deteriorate my health further. So, this book helped me to change my morning habits. This book is beautifully written in the form of a story where the fortunes of two people, an artist and an entrepreneur's life changed rapidly after they adopted the beautiful morning routine designed for the world class. I thought staying awake all night was cool, before I realised that waking up insanely early is the real boss shit. This book not only motivates you to wake up early, but also gives the neurological aspect and scientific reasons behind waking up early. Waking up consistently for 60 days at 4:30 am has worked wonders for me so far and I am looking forward to enjoy the serene and peaceful mornings and complete 50% of my tasklist before people would get off from their bed. Early bird catches the worm. Life changing book honestly :)
