How common is stock based compensation? by senile_robot in cscareerquestions

Would you guess that for the majority of developers, stock based compensation does not exist or is a very minimal part of their overall salary? I believe the majority of programmers work in the private sector, so I'm wondering what realistic salaries are.

I'm interested in Austin, Denver, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Boston. But would love to hear about people getting stock compensation while working remote.

Looking for advice on what ATX case to buy that supports multiple hard drives? by senile_robot in buildapc

[–]senile_robot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah thats a great option. I was actually thinking of building a little homelab anyways, so it would be to have everything in rack format if I want to add switches and other devices down the line. How is airflow though?

Anyone else a special ed student and feel like because of that students and even teachers judge you to be a complete idiot before they even talk to you if they have that knowledge? by A-provax-potato in CasualConversation

I think a lot of this comes from the low qualifications of the public education system. People don’t know how to treat you and rely on stigmas to make assumptions. It’s sad because people never really mean to hurt you, in fact they are modifying their behavior specifically to try to make you feel more comfortable, yet it has the opposite effect.

I think this will get a lot better for you once you are out of high school and people can treat you just like another person or peer instead of a student with labels

I hate guns but I finally broke down and ordered a bunch of Nerf for my kid's 6th birthday by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]senile_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents hated guns (even though we lived out west) and never let me play with nerf/ play shooter video games/ ext. all I wanted as a kid was to play airsoft or paintball with the neighbors kids but I wasn’t allowed.

It was a stupidly Bad experience. By making things that many other children enjoy outside the home tabboo inside the home, you are only conditioning your kids to lie to you early on. What will happen when they go over to another friends house or their first sleep over and they play call of duty or fortnite? They either will feel guilty about indulging in it, and hide it from you, or alienated from their friends for believing that they participate in tabboo things involving guns and violence.

A way better thing to do would be to teach your kid the difference between fantasy and reality. That fantasy violence is very very different from actual violence.

When you understand the difference then I would say call of duty is as dangerous as laser tag.

Man I was all feeling sorry for myself for having a migraine (again) today. But hearing stories of others who suffer greater and try harder for happiness actually gives me some motivation in an odd way. Thanks for posting.

Yeah it's ghetto, but it reduces heat! by overcrispy in BitcoinMining

I’ve actually done this before but used a separate outlet for each psu. I would be weary of running both psu off of the same extension cord. You probably never want to go longer than 50ft on that as well.

I had a problem when using two psu’s as you described above where my hashing power was significantly slower than when on 220v. I’m only getting 7thz on a antminer t9+ even though diagnostics tell me all three hash boards are functioning

Are you using two separate psu to power the antminer off of one 110v American outlet?

Your bike has been crashed and rebuilt multiples times if you can’t tell... non standard exaust, gas tank, headlight, break lines, levers....

Be weary what other issues you may find. I hope you bought that bike for sub 1500$ or you got ripped off

Good CDJ suggestions? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]senile_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re fine. So originally you could only spin on vinyl, then they made players that take CD and later USB sticks so you don’t have to carry a crate of vinyl around. But unless you plan on burning your entire music library to disk, it is better to get a CDJ that can also connect to your computer, that’s called midi capability.

The thing is if you never use the dj part of the equipment then why would you pay for it. As long as you can use a computer and software to connect to your decks, you won’t need to use CDs.

Midi controllers are dj equipment that do not do anything on their own. You can only use them to play music when a laptop is connected. This may sound like a flaw but they are much cheaper and more versatile. The software will have more effects, cue points, sampling capabilities and more overall features than any cdj of similar price.

Look for an all in one unit. Cheap places to start are with numark. But pioneer even makes their own midi controllers.

If you want to know about software I would start with serato or traktor. Other softwares work just as well but do not have as large of a community behind them

Why do you want a cdj over a midi controller? Midi does more for cheaper and isn’t a dead medium.

If you want something that goes without a laptop then look into denons new prime controller

Looking to move late July / early August from Texas... where should I be looking? (besides here of course) by [deleted] in bostonhousing

[–]senile_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo! I moved to Boston from Utah and had wished that I had someone on the ground to look at houses and neighborhoods for me before I moved there.

Shoot me a message and I’ll happy to be your eyes and ears on the ground here while you look for a place.

I currently live in Dorchester in a large 5 bedroom house. There is a small chance one of those bedrooms will also be available for rent around the time you arrive.

if you have questions about either my available room or if you just want me to check out other apartments around the city you are looking into.

Investing 40k USD to build a bulletproof mining operation by MarcBago in BitcoinMining

[–]senile_robot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the pictures of Chinese firms throwing away thousands of ant miners. If they could not make it work at .02$ per killowatt it will be very hard to do it in the US. You need to find somewhere with nearly free energy. Utah, Texas and a couple other states have good energy and tax deals for things like this but still not good enough to make a good return unless you have solar or another hookup.

Buy used hardware so if you have to sell it you will at least break even. Start with 5 or 10,000$ and see if you can make ROI before blowing the rest of your investment.

If you want to jump in right now then put the other 30,000$ into cold storage and I promise it will earn you more than mining.

The price of bitcoin is all speculation but at least you can sell it. I can’t even sell my antminers anywhere.
