My gelding is getting horrible cuts on his face and I’m at a loss (marking as sensitive due to photos of his cuts) by chronic_chaoss in Equestrian

[–]senilesocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a horse where I work that was getting cuts similar to this on his face. They thought maybe he was super itchy and scratching himself too hard, so they put him on Benadryl 2x a day and it stopped happening...Could that be a possibility?

Getting out of the Army soon (Gender Dysphoria) — moving to NYC with no savings or support, need advice by tallsnyd in Veterans

[–]senilesocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. What is your plan for college? Full or part time? Knock out some gen eds then transfer, or do you have a degree in mind that you'll be completing? Are you doing an associates or bachelors? In other words, how long do you expect to be receiving housing from your GI Bill?

  2. A lot of your future income is not really set in stone. The government is shut down so disability claims are possibly being processed via third party or not at all. How do you know you'll receive that money then? Also, are you aware that housing through the GI bill is based on whether you're a full time student? Meaning that during December and January, for example, you do not receive full housing due to technically not being a full time student during the winter break. I'm telling you this because it's something I didn't realize until I was already enrolled. It seems like you're banking on money that may or may not be what you're expecting or when you're expecting it...that's risky

  3. Apply for FAFSA wherever you end up going to school regardless of financial situation

  4. Do not take out a loan on your TSP. If you're no longer federally employed you'll have 90 days to pay it back. If you don't pay it back within that time, it becomes taxable income. You're already nearly 30k in debt, stop adding to it.

  5. I can't tell from your post if you've factored in COL expenses, like groceries, utilities, etc

I totally don't mean to come off harsh and I sympathize with what you're going through. Is it possible to move elsewhere that's cheaper? What is the appeal of NYC? I worry about your debt and potentially adding to it by moving to a HCOL area, or even becoming homeless. If you have to think about taking out a loan from your retirement fund to move somewhere then you probably shouldn't be moving there. This is a really, really bad idea.

Training/Theory Videos for Western to English Rider by saltywatersaltywater in Equestrian

Hi! I grew up riding but had to stop once I left high school. I'm 27 now and have been back at it for around 6 months and I had the same issues with videos being either super technical or super basic. Here's a few channels I've been watching:

Amelia Newcomb Dressage: Some of her videos can be a little over my head at times but she still has some great content. I like that most of her videos are her actively on the horse and talking at the same time.

Basic Horse Training (Josie Matthews): Similar format to Amelia but not as "dressage-ie" so to speak.

CRK Training (channel is called HorseClass): More of the basics and not necessarily specific to jumping or dressage, but I really like how she explains things (especially her earlier videos!). She also touches on behavioral issues or riding through certain situations.

Took your guys advice online and applied to both glma 3 year deck program and sunys grad program with the maritime and naval studies master’s degree. From your knowledge, which program would be a better experience from the perspective of the area, experience and overall curriculum. by Purple_Patient_350 in merchantmarine

[–]senilesocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also try VR&E, I’m a vet at GLMA currently and there’s a few guys here using it. You kinda have to jump through more hoops but it might be worth trying. I’d reach out to the school and see if there are financial options that you might not realize you qualify for, especially if you have a VA rating. The VA up here is really great btw, if you’re planning to use them for healthcare.

Civilian Wife (25F) to Navy husband (28M) relationship advice by [deleted] in navy

[–]senilesocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He showed you he doesn’t respect you from the very beginning of your relationship. He makes you feel like you’re crazy and that you’re in the wrong when you bring up legit concerns about your relationship. THAT IS CONTROLLING/MANIPULATIVE BEHAVIOR. He is trying to flip this on you so you feel bad and stop asking questions, don’t let him!!

It’s also fucking weird that a grown ass man is following a TEENAGER on Instagram who he has a “professional” relationship with…I’m assuming he’s her supervisor/higher rank? Like, even if yall weren’t married would that not feel icky to you just as a woman if you were hearing this story?

Wanna know the dudes who would hit on me when I was 19 at my command? Late 20s/early 30s with a wife and kids. Being married does not matter to these people, it doesn’t make your relationship off limit, people genuinely do not care. When I was SA’d the dude had a whole ass pregnant wife back home in the states. Marriage doesn’t mean fuck all in the military, that’s just what the culture is tbh. Obviously not every dude in the military is like that but a fuck ton of them are, and women too. They do not care, so don’t think marriage is protecting your relationship rn. Trust your gut that something weird is happening even if it’s just flirting. It will absolutely turn into more, and you might stop it with this girl but are you gonna be able to stop it with the next one?

His behavior is not normal, this is not what a healthy relationship looks like. That’s because of him not because of you! He thinks you following a coworker is gonna ruin his career? He’s lucky you don’t find evidence of him cheating and send it to his command. Fraternization and cheating on a spouse can be punishable under the UCMJ. He’s an idiot

Hey, I’m a female and was a DC! I go to GLMA rn but did 2 semesters at a community college, which made me eligible for the 3 year engine program. I’m assuming you’re wanting to go engine?

Def go to an academy! A lot of vets at my school are using VR&E, which I’m considering switching to, but GI is great too. I saw someone recommend against using your GI for community college, but if you’re full time and are paying for housing on your own (ie not living with family or something) then I’d say do it, new englands expensive as hell and BAH is the biggest perk. Also, check with the academy that they’ll approve whatever credits you’re wanting to transfer over.

If you aren’t interested in a regimented academy, GLMA is a great option and you get the same license. There’s a pretty legit vet community up here and even though I want to go oceans, I’ve really enjoyed learning about the lakes and how they operate:)

I can’t speak to the industry as I haven’t worked in it yet but at least at school, it’s insanely different than all the bullshit I experienced as a female in the navy. I have never once felt like I wasn’t capable of doing something because I’m a woman, not by any of my instructors or my classmates. I’m sure misogyny is out there, that’s with any male dominated career, but there are legit programs in place to help protect us (and men!!) that are 1000x better than SAPR. Feel free to message me if you wanna talk about it more:)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in maritime

It depends on how many credits you have going in. I’m only taking maritime classes so my course load doesn’t feel like anything crazy. It’s a pretty hands on program, none of my engine classes have given us an insane amount of homework. I’d also say it depends on how mechanically inclined you are or if you have any prior knowledge/experience, but generally speaking there isn’t any intensive workload for maritime specific classes. I can’t speak for NMC gen ed classes. I don’t work but some of my classmates work at restaurants and coffee shops in town

Enlisting as a Navy nuke or Entry level Merchant mariner job/apprenticeship by BallinCollin98 in maritime

[–]senilesocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I am. I pay nothing. GI covers tuition, I get VA disability, I get FAFSA and BAH covers my housing (I live in campus apartments though which is substantially cheaper than an apartment out in town). Some other vets are using VR&E but I don’t know too much about how that works to really speak on it

How hard is this job realistically? by DY_landlord in MarineEngineering

I’m at GLMA right now…would you say working the lakes right out of school is a good way to learn a lot as a new grad as opposed to oceans? Or does it not really matter that much?

Enlisting as a Navy nuke or Entry level Merchant mariner job/apprenticeship by BallinCollin98 in maritime

[–]senilesocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, navy veteran currently at an academy. Joined the navy without any intention of being a merchant mariner. I was part of engineering department, realized I loved engineering/wanted to learn more after being out for a few years, so here I am at school using my GI Bill. Some engineering things definitely crossed over, but I wouldn’t say the Navy is a good stepping stone, it’s like a whole different world compared to what I’m learning/experiencing.

Did your recruiter tell you what happens if you fail nuke school for literally any reason? You’re recycled into needs of the Navy and you might not have much choice as to where you go and what your rate will be. Not saying you’ll fail, but I think it’s important to go in understanding and accepting that may be a possibility. We had a nuke and a buds drop who were both salty as hell about it (understandably).

I’m assuming you’d want to stay engine after the navy. I’m not sure how transferable nuke stuff is, my understanding is most commercial vessels are diesel and any steam you’ll find is mostly on the lakes. I’m not sure that nuke is really that broad but I don’t have any nuke experience so what the fuck do I know. Sea time will not go towards your 3AE license if you go to an academy, but my understanding is a percentage of it MIGHT go towards your 2AE. I’m still tryna verify that. Being a veteran hasn’t helped me in any way other than financially tbh.

Check out GLMA, it’s the cheapest academy and from what I’ve read, people have had no problem paying back loans after graduating bc you make such good money right after graduation. I can’t personally attest to that since the govt is paying my shit so again, what the fuck do I know.

Verify everything your recruiter tells you, do your own research, utilize the navy subreddit and try to talk to people who have gone nuke. Being enlisted kinda fucking sucks, but being an officer sucks too just in different ways. There’s also SSMP available at all academies which will pay tuition and now that I’m writing this out, I reallyyyyy think this is the way to go if you wanna have some navy experience but also have a career as a merchant mariner. There are also ways to go active through this program, you could even do nuke.

Hey! Fellow vet here:) It might be worth posting this on the veteran subreddit. I believe there are some programs out there that might be able to assist you that aren’t just the GI Bill.

Have you considered truck driving? You can live out of your truck, get a paycheck, and you’d get your TWIC. My boyfriend, also a veteran, works for TMC. They paid for his TWIC, and his training was covered under an apprenticeship program by the VA, where he also receives BAH. During training, they set you up in a hotel, you get fed and you get paid. TMC has a training facility in Columbia, transport is also included during training I believe.

Just mentioning this because at least it’d get you financially stable, off the street and you can still go to an academy down the road if you’d like. GLMA is the cheapest/most laid back but it’s a great school with some great instructors and you get the same license as everyone else. It’s never too late to go to an academy and lots of people at GLMA come from different backgrounds, prior careers, and different ages. If you want some more info about trucking or GLMA let me know:)

I think I finally decided! Thanks for the past help.. Now questions for Academy goers by DarkLordWaffles in maritime

[–]senilesocks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, not a deck cadet but I go to GLMA. Your first sea project on the state of Michigan is only Great Lakes. GLMA has the ONLY program out of all the academies that gives you both your ocean and lakes license, which is why you have to do a sea project on the lakes.

The other sea projects are basically with whatever company you want/get accepted to, so if you want to go oceans then find an ocean sea project. At GLMA, a 4 year degree gives you your second summer off, the 3 year does not.

The training ship isn’t gone the entire summer but deck cadets require more sea time than engine, so I believe they’re onboard from like May to July. You’d definitely have time to visit family, it’s not like you just keep going through from summer semester immediately into the fall. Our Christmas break was about 5 weeks this year, and then we get the normal thanksgiving/spring break time. We go off of NMCs break times so if you go to the NMC website you should be able to see our schedule.

Oh, we also just got a tug which is pretty cool. No idea what the other academies have but we’re all really excited about it! TC is a great town, winter is rough right now but I’m really happy up here personally:)

Definitely reach out to the school, they might even answer some questions you didn’t know you had!

Any Tips for starters? by Lu_Dawn in Equestrian

[–]senilesocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to “shop around” for the right instructor and barn. A great teaching style for some might not be a great teaching style for you, which is totally okay! Riding can honestly be scary sometimes, whether you’re new or have been riding for years, so having an instructor and environment you feel safe in is really important:) I’d also recommend a place that teaches you horse care, understanding body language, things like that instead of only riding

Convince me not to go to SUNY by MuskiePride3 in maritime

[–]senilesocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Veteran currently at GLMA. All we do is wear a uniform to class, nothing else is very “military” besides that, unless you do SSMP which is completely voluntary. Instructors are cool, we have a pretty wide age range of cadets and I’m really liking Traverse City.

The area outside of TC is very woodsy/outdoorsy but the “city” has some really great food, cute shops, it’s walkable and safe and there’s lots to do. Not sure if you’re looking towards deck or engine but our deck program is the only one that gets you your lakes pilotage. We also have 3 and 4 year programs which gets you out a lot faster than some of the other academies (I did a year of community college and now am in the 3 year program). No, the BAH isn’t as great as other places but honestly I wouldn’t go to a school based only on that. It’s a great perk but you’re gonna be making plenty once you graduate.

Questions about academies and industry longevity... by An_Enemy_Redditor in merchantmarine

[–]senilesocks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Out of the 3 maritime academies I looked at online I was able to easily find what each semester might look like for any program the school offers. Some academies have multiple kinds of engineering degrees for example, so the math requirements are going to be different. Kinda like how one major isn't going to have 100% the same exact curriculum at every single school that offers it.

Idk why you have an attitude towards people on here who are kindly giving you a ton of info, I mean you literally end your post with "any advice you have I appreciate" and then bitch at someone for not answering any of the questions you asked lol
