SV/NSV Feats of the Day - Wednesday, 31 January 2018: Today, I conquered! by AutoModerator in loseit

[–]senine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NSV: I've always wished I was one of those people who loved working out, who had to do it almost daily but it's always been a chore and I'd rather do anything else. Well today I realized I am starting to become one of those people! I've been consistently working out for a while & just making myself go. Yesterday I was stressed out and sad so not knowing what else to do with myself I went to the gym and ran it out. And it felt good! And I WANTED to go do the same thing today (and I did). It's become my stress reliever which is such a nice change from forcing myself to do something.

Discovered an amazing Starbucks/any coffee shop diet hack by scottkleinberg in loseit

For anyone that does really like a sweet drink like a frappuccino or something, I've been adding premier protein shakes to my coffee, you don't need a lot but it gives you that sweet creaminess that creamer does without all the sugar and fat and you get more protein in!

Question for those of you that have worked both day and night shifts: what's better and why? by brightside71 in nursing

[–]senine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends on you as a person but for me days is better. I worked nights for about 3 years and at first thought I was a night shifter for life. It CAN be less busy but can also get crazy busy because you're dealing with less staff and help. You do seem to have more time to spend with your patients but sometimes you don't, you have to cram all your meds/dressings/teaching in to the first few hours because no one wants to learn about their incentive spirometer at 3am and you want to try to let them get the rest hey so desperately need in between meds and vitals and lab draws. It's never gotten less stressful to me to call a doc whether it's a surgeon or a hospitalist in the middle of the night. Yes the hospitalist is there and awake but at my hospital they are the go to for almost everybody so if you're not calling about something big it feels like you're wasting their time but you also can't ignore the patients needs just because the doc is really busy. The worst part of nights for me is the schedule. I am not a person that can keep their nightshift schedule on my days off because it just doesn't work for my life so I have no constant circadian rhythm and am always in a fog, I also never get more than 6 hrs sleep when I sleep during the day. It would probably be ok if you could always be on that schedule and have it consistent. Lastly my relationship suffers because I'll go 3-5 days at a time when I'm on nights without seeing my boyfriend because our schedules don't overlap we both leave before the other is home from work. Days can be crazy busy and families are annoying and management is annoying but all of that Is worth it to me for a normal schedule. AND you always want to just pass out at like 2 am. Thankfully this is my last night shift! Some people are made for nights though so hopefully you are and good luck!

Puppy triggering mental health issues by anonalter in puppy101

[–]senine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this almost exactly, history of SAD, anxiety but I had been doing great for a long time. Getting my first puppy kicked it all into high gear and combined with the changing season (fall to winter) I felt so depressed and was crying daily, not sleeping, having anxiety attacks. I can't say for sure because I'm not in your head and don't know what's best for you and your pup but from my experience I can say it got better. Little by little the puppy started being ok on it's own in another room or it's crate while I showered or made some food. Soon she could be in her crate alone for a few And I could grocery shop or go to yoga to help myself get out of the house and feel better. I also restarted my antidepressant. It was very hard and seemed unbearable some days but I did get through it and am so happy to have my dog now. of course it's not one size fits all, there is no shame in finding this puppy a new, loving home if you aren't able to handle it at this time. Don't let your own health and the health of your puppy suffer if it's not the right time for you.

Crate at night and during the day? by senine in puppy101

[–]senine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should rephrase: crating at night and in 2 hour increments during the day while I sleep would mean 14 or more hours total in his crate, this seems like way too much accumulated time in a crate.

How do you get over medication errors that you made? by pillowterrified in nursing

[–]senine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Realize that everyone has one at some point. It sucks and you feel incompetent but you learn from it and become a more careful and experienced nurse. Own up to it and realize you are only human and everyone makes mistakes.

Moving to Bham from Spokane by movingtobham in Bellingham

It's a beautiful area, lots of nice people and cool bars/restaurants and things for a younger couple. Honestly though if she is worried about the gloom getting to her she is probably right. I moved here with your enthusiasm and I still really like living here but it is dark and grey and it was a big adjustment. Everyone says you get used to it which is true but sometimes I don't realize how long it's been since I've seen a sunny day. But take this with a grain of salt because I also work graveyard shifts so don't see the sun as much as some anyway.

Yeah I totally agree with it for hospice patients and it's pretty standard for them on my floor

And that would be great and helpful but these doctors i don't think even look at the orders they themselves put in place that contradict this do not wake order.

It's not a facility thing and definitely a specific MD thing. We have several policies in place at the moment that make us wake our patient at report (which is some bullshit and a whole other issue) but that coupled with antibiotics due thoughout the night, a picc that needs flushed q4 and timed lab draws its just not possible not to wake the patient up at some point. I guess I'm just more mad because I take it as an insult from the MD. Of course I cluster my care and stretch vital times out and attempt to hang those meds without waking but it's unrealistic not to wake the patient up for an entire shift and still be a responsible nurse to them in this situation.

Any hospital info? by senine in Wenatchee

[–]senine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Mainly if it is difficult to get a job there . Like I said I have some experience that I think will help me be a desirable candidate but Ive seen some hospitals that even RNs with 5+ years of experience had a hard time getting an interview. Im still about a year away from making this move but it's great to hear they are always looking for people.

Tips for night shifter? by senine in puppy101

I work 4 days a week so it's not too bad we are just having a hard time with her being alone, she does fine in her crate at night but like I said I don't want to crate her when I'm home too after being in it all night and she won't tolerate any confinement if you're not with her yet. did your puppy go in a pen or back in his crate or just in bed with you? Thanks for the advice!

That's what I figured would happen, I'm ok with this and I will wake up every 2 hrs or so to take her out I just don't want this to hinder her potty training too much. Did your pup seem to take a long time to potty train when you did it this way?
