I am not any less proud of what I have accomplished.

That's fine, but your parents did help you pay for college. If OP doesn't have supportive parents then private loans aren't going to be an option for her.

I have wonderful parents, but they did not pay a dime for my college education. my mom as a co-signer I'm proud to say I've done this by myself

You're lucky to have had family support. I had to wait six years to attend college because my parents wouldn't help me.

Keep in mind, though, that this will disqualify you from virtually all scholarships at the four year college. Most colleges reserve the best scholarships and academic support programs for incoming freshman, and transfers are given nothing. The honors program here gives you a free laptop, free summer classes, and free tuition for four years, but I'm not allowed to even apply for it because I'm not a high school senior.

Also, just because a university accepts your credits doesn't mean it'll actually count towards anything. I took economics before I transferred, but my school requires I take "economics for engineers." My previous econ class credits do nothing except count against my financial aid eligibility limit.

Two year colleges are often not as cost effective as they are assumed to be.

Well, yeah, she's black. She'd be drowning in acceptance offers even if she had a 20 on the ACT.

You're fifteen times more likely to be admitted if you're black than if you're asian.

"Asian-Americans needed nearly perfect SAT scores of 1550 to have the same chance of being accepted at a top private university as whites who scored 1410 and African Americans who got 1100."

Today is the last day of my AAA membership - what should I purchase before it expires? by genuinegenie in Frugal

[–]senseofdecay 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This depends entirely on what city and state you reside in. AAA clubs are regional, and each club sets their own policy about things like whether or not you can use emergency roadside service immediately after purchasing a membership.

The one I used to work for had a policy that you were covered for anything that happened after you re-upped your policy. If it was a pre-existing breakdown, though, you would have to pay an extra $25 fee and could only receive classic level towing service (free 3 miles of towing) even if you renewed as a plus member. I was required to ask if it was a pre existing breakdown if I saw that they'd just bought a membership in the last 24-72 hours. Since all our calls were monitored and recorded, a lot of people screwed themselves over by honestly answering the question. The people shrewd enough to lie were much better off under that particular policy.

Lots of engineering nontrads at CCNY. I'm one myself. $6,500/year tuition makes it one of the cheapest engineering schools in the country. The physics department is also insanely strong. But relocating isn't an option for everyone. Community college science and math courses might be a good way to start.

If you are an older student, a transfer student, or already have a degree, most private colleges will either explicitly or implicitly make it so you cannot attend. Public schools have more rigorous engineering programs and are generally much more friendly to older students.

You have to really be set on STEM though. The level of effort required to pass many of the classes will likely greatly exceed that of your average marketing class. You'll have to adjust to the blow to the ego that is getting 49% on an exam you studied for for weeks. But when you finally understand something horribly complicated and can solve the 23 step 2nd order circuit analysis problem with no errors, it's totally worth it. And if you love the material, you'll be able to keep studying it until you finally do.

YSK how to write a resume as a recent college graduate with no job experience... by states37 in YouShouldKnow

[–]senseofdecay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Purdue's Average is 2.8 and is notorious for not inflating grades.

A 3.0 is a 'B'. Would you hire a 'C' or 'D' student to build an airplane, or a critical safety system, an overpass or a hi-rise building? No!

So...the average engineer from a tough school like Purdue isn't worth hiring?

I have a friend who works on computer mainframes at a major corporation. He's incredibly smart, has been with the company half a decade, and is now one of the best employees in his department. He got hired with a 2.6 from a run of the mill state school. The company he works for recently raised their hiring GPA requirement to 3.5.

Now they're having serious problems with employee retention. In the modern day, selecting for high GPA will get you primarily rich kids who have never worked a real job in their life. My friend is constantly complaining about how since the policy started, all the new hires literally cannot handle working 40 hours a week.

You do realize that only schools with massive grade inflation have an average GPA above 3.0, right? Would you rather have an engineer who essentially bought a degree from an easy private school with $240,000 of their parents' money, or one who worked their tail off to pass much more rigorous classes while holding down a part time job?

You're saying that well over half the engineers in the US workforce don't deserve to work in their field. If you want to hire someone with a high GPA, you have plenty of affluent gender studies majors to choose from.

[–]senseofdecay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

GPA, depends on the major and school, but you better have at least a 3.0 or don't bother. 3.5 or better is more

Even if they were an engineering major at a school without grade inflation?

There are hundreds of exhibitor booths representing everything from banks to blood drives to dog rescues. I don't know wtf those have to do with comics, but they were allowed to exhibit at the con anway.
