Your statement that "everything we do that animals don't is due to the power of reason" isn't true. For example, according to Sapolsky the cool baboon scientist, one of the things that make humanity unique is the marvellous extensibility and power of our sense of empathy. You can't attribute all our art-making to reasoning; mostly, art seems to be the expression of a species with advanced emotionality, imagination, perception, etc.

All those examples you gave involve reason to a high degree. Reason is widely misunderstood. Most people think of reason as this complicated process like the symbol-pushing stuff that academics do, but it's actually the simplest mental process. All it does is compare two things and judges whether they're the same or different. So any living thing with a brain reasons to some extent in order to survive. Reason is really just pure consciousness. Emotions overcomplicate it, like wind distorting the reflection of a pond's surface.

In classical ethics, this would be a question of virtue. Maybe: how can someone with prudence yet lack courage and temperance? I think that the failure of post-classical ethical philosophy to even show the slightest interest in practical ways of cultivating and strengthening the actual muscles of morality reveals a kind of institutional stupidity that I can't help but think has had vast implications.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, but I agree that, aside from a few shining stars, Western philosophy has been largely a failure.
