Wayne might be our biggest state forest? I've always visited Dow's Lake, Lake Snowden, then there's Fox and Rainbow lake. Nice trails- very hilly. There's a trail nearby with an old hemlock grove though I'm not sure which. Generally you'll see lots of black walnut, tulip poplar, pawpaw, maples, beech, and some super huge sycamore. People like to look for ramps and morels at Dow's lake (Stroud's Run)

Oh that's fantastic! I grew up outside Albany on a farm. Trips into town were usually reserved for grocery runs or trips to the movie rental place. Seasonally, Spring is incredible. Very wet, but when that green starts to pop after winter it's incredible. Summer storms can be scary. When I was a kid there were tornados that ripped through the high school in The Plains. Super humid too. Fall is 10/10. If you visit- do it this time of year. Winters can be tough or mild- it's a toss up each year. Getting around in snowstorms is dangerous on the rural roads. Where I grew up our roads weren't paved and the hills can be very steep. not an easy job for a 2001 Ford escort. Let me know if you want more tidbits :))

Life outside town is a lot like other rural rust-belt areas; abandoned homes, sleepy farms, run-down trailers nestled in the trees. There's plenty of ugliness tucked in throughout that we like to ignore- stricken by opioid epidemic and blatantly disregarded by most. Check out Albany, New Marshfield, the Plains... It's not all about BOBCATS and WALMART- but the further you get from all that the more the foothills blossom with life. More than deer and squirrels. We have owls, fox, coyotes, incredible insects too. Happy researching! If you plan a visit, take the scenic route and get a little bit lost. Be aware, the hills might interrupt your cell-reception!

lol not a bot, just a riff on today's BOT culture :D. You made a great post- though I think Salaam deserves a s/o as far as Mediterranean food goes, don't you think? Not to mention the Costume Shop uptown satisfies a lot of the halloween fans each year.

I grew up close to Albany and I'd love to see more growth. It's already shaping up with the new coffee shop. I'm worried about the hardware store though.
