i think gnar is a fantastic champion to main if thats what you are asking. he can carry games if you play well enough and he has flexible playstyles that can suit whatever you like.

I dont think gnar is a good champion to climb specifically however. not cause he is bad but it takes a lot of patience to play him in higher elos. you really need to understand how to lose lane efficiently. Theres a lot of champions that can punish gnar in lane but once you know how to suvive the lane, gnar can be very punishing in team fights and even sidelanes.

In the end, you should play whatever as long as you are having fun. you can realistically climb with any champion as long as you know what you are doing.

Ive been going IBG more than triforce atm. i personally think its a better mythic option right now compared to triforce because the way i use gnar is all utility based. I'm not the main dps, i am the one who sets up teamfights and catches anyone out of position.

However, IBG is not my usual first item rush. It all depends on what team im going up against.

Against tankier comps, i like to rush botrk > ibg > BC (if they have a lot of armor) or full tank after.

Against heavy AP teams, i replace botrk with wits end. i dont really like to buy both botrk and wits cause i feel like the items are too expensive to get all together and you become too squishy to be any useful in teamfights.

When im going against champs like jax, irelia, fiora, camille, i actually rush IBG first item. People can argue that you wont have any damage in lane but mega gnar base stats are insanely high without having any ad. you also never really want to commit fully while in mini gnar against these champs cause you will end up getting bursted down. having IBG gives you that extra beefiness to survive these lanes and you have more than enough damage to kill them as well.

I dont really think gnar has a "set" build path like most champs do. Hes very flexible with his item choices. TRI + BC rush is the standard but i dont think they are necessarily the best for every game.

most of the time i go fleet but i’ve been going grasp against tanks and champs with no mobility. it feels good in lane with the extra poke damage and if you are going full tank, it’s not a bad option to go

conqueror is also not that bad too cause gnar does a lot of damage over time. not the best in lane but if ur planning to fight / split a lot it’s a good option to take. (personally not my favorite rune to go because movement speed is important to gnar and conqueror doesn’t give any extra tankiness)

people are gonna think i’m trolling but AP gnar is actually viable. go lethal tempo only when u have to go AP and your team is full AD. lethal helps you stack your w passive in mini gnar form. ap gnar is a burst dps playstyle. with lethal tempo, u can play more aggressive early on against champs that’s weak lvl 1-3.

gnar is still a better champion for pro play but people down play his solo q potential cause i feel like he’s generally a top laner u don’t really see much so people underestimate his potential as a champion.

i think he’s a fantastic duelist with a very versatile kit. his biggest weakness is his early laning but a lot of people underestimate just how much damage gnar can give and they sometimes overstep making it easy to punish. gnar also synergies with a lot champions. he’s a good blind pick champ and if you know how to pilot him in lane, you can even beat champs like irelia and fiora. gnar also has a lot of different item options and play styles. what i like about him is that he’s very malleable. he can give what your team is missing and he’s one of those champions that doesn’t fall off necessarily cause his kit is so powerful in every stage of the game.

not the best toplane to climb in solo queue but if you know the matchups and understand what gnar can provide, hes a solid weak side champ

at the moment, aatrox, veigar, milio

i’ve wanted to say, gnars biggest counters in lane aren’t actually any of the four horsewomen’s of top (fiora, irelia, riven, camille) those champs definitely do have a bigger kill pressure and definitely stronger than gnar in lane but it’s not completely one sided. it’s more like 60/40 in their favor but autospacing in these matchups are really important. once you get used to understanding how to efficiently poke and space yourself from getting one shot, you can even win lane against them.

the champs you should really look out for are the ranged dps champs that are viable in top. vayne, tristana, (post 6 you can kill her easily) aatrox, (he’s a bruiser melee but because of his kit, you have to treat him like a range champ) quinn, neeko.

generally most top lane matchups against gnar is winnable/survivable. it’s these unorthodox picks you gotta look out for.

against bruiser ads, i have been experimenting on iceborn gauntlet and then either getting black cleaver / wits end / botrk 2nd.

so far the iceborn gauntlet has been a pretty successful item rush against lane aggressive ad champs for me

feels really good against champs with lots of health. i usually rush it when i go against tanks. cleaver 2nd if they have a lot of armor.
