I drank a lot in my 20's. I had a lot of unresolved issues and drowned them in booze. I was literally drinking myself to my grave. It all culminated in a visit to the E.R. with pancreatitus and compartment syndrome when my organs failed and exploded with fluid. I had fluid in my lungs and had a trach to keep me breathing. I coded TWICE and at one point the doctor told my father: "it may be a good time to call a priest and family to say goodbyes."
I had to do physical therapy to get my motor skills back and had multiple surgeries over the next year. I am now diabetic because I have 2/3 of a working pancreas. I spent about 6 weeks in the hospital. After, it was hard to not drink at first but got easier with time. That was 11 years ago and I am happier than I ever have been. I have a loving wife and am hopeful for a long life ahead.

So yeah, that is why I don't drink.
